Five On Friday - More Saxophone!

Sparks Of Insanity By Vinny "Bond" Marini Friday, April 22, 2011 6 Of Your Sparks

Photobucket Check out the other participants by clicking on his link to the left...and join in!

You can register for free at playlist.com and type in a band name and BAM the song will be there to assist in building your playlist.

Travis lays out some guidelines for this meme and they go like this:

1. Grab the banner, make your post title Five on Friday, and be sure to link back here.

2. Go to Playlist.com to make your play list of five songs. Choose a particular theme to share with us. You can simply post the play list, or you can add a little summary about what you are sharing.

3. I don't know how to make a specific linky, so be sure to leave me a comment to let me know that you participated.

4. No tags, but feel free to invite your friends to play along if they need a post topic on a Friday.

I was listening to a lot of music on my rides back and forth to NOLA (about 5.5 hours each way). On XM Radio both BB King's Bluesville and Classic Vinyl channels and off my iTouch.I also listened to three episodes of Jay & Matt's Comedy Joint I'm With Stupid, but that has nothing to do with this set of music!

The rallying cry from a Saturday Night skit starring Christopher Walken called for MORE COWBELL!  Well for this music lover, the cry is MORE SAXOPHONE!

Saxophone is so prevalent in rock music...these are some of my favorite examples. Some have heavy sax presence. On others the sax is used minimally, but without it, think how different these songs would have been.

1. "Rosalita" - Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band - The Wild, The Innocent, & The E Street Shuffle. Simple. Clarence Clemmons is one of the best sax players in the rock genre. Rosalita happens to be my favorite Springsteen song...so there ya go!

2. "Walk On The Wild Side" - Lou Reed - Transformer. It was produced by David Bowie. The saxophone solo played over the fadeout of the song was performed by Ronnie Ross, who had previously taught David Bowie to play the saxophone during Bowie's childhood. Reed also used strings on this. Innovative for 1972.

3. "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant" - Billy Joel - The Stranger. The song is composed in three parts, three individual songs which are fused together. In an interview, Joel cites the second side of The Beatles album Abbey Road as one of the main influences behind it. The song starts with a gentle melodic piano ballad, which sets the scene of two old classmates in an Italian restaurant, moving on to a triumphant and uptempo jazz-influenced piece in the middle, with a clarinet and saxophone solo, which then segues into a rock and roll section (which Joel refers to as "The Ballad of Brenda and Eddie").

4. "Brown Sugar" - Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers. The wonderful Bobby Keys on saxophone for this one. Keys has played on albums by The Who, Harry Nilsson, Delaney Bramlett, The Rolling Stones, George Harrison's All Things Must Pass, Eric Clapton and Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs and Englishmen. He was also the main sax player for the Stones, playing on every album from 1969 until 1974, and from 1980 to present, and performing on all Stones tours since 1970 except for the 1981 US Tour.

5. "Low Spark Of High Heel Boys" - Traffic - Low Spark Of High Heel Boys. Steve Winwood (vocals/keyboards); Chris Wood (Tenor saxophone, Alto Saxophone, Flute, Keyboards); Jim Capaldi (drums); Ric Grech (bass); Jim Gordon (drums); Rebop Kwaku BaahHad (percussionist).  I left it for last as it is a long song. This version is about 11 minutes, and a classic rock song.  This band was so far ahead of their time. Check it out, some great sax throughout.

ENJOY

Monday Musings...

Sparks Of Insanity By Vinny "Bond" Marini Monday, May 04, 2009 24 Of Your Sparks

This Week:
Pork Tenderloin with Jalapeno Cream Sauce
Sauteed Haricot Verts
Texas Dirty Rice

Come take a seat at the table

Friday blogger blocked me from leaving comments when I got home from work and then this weekend has been one of rain, thunder, lightening and simply closing up in the apartment with my Nancy.

Did not make it to the Music Fest this year. The weather was not for me. I guess 2 of 3 is not so bad.

I will be here next Monday with a Tuneage Tutelage - New Music Monday. I just received a few new CDs and want to review and send out some questions for the artists to answer.

I am also off to new Hampshire Wednesday morning until Friday morning. Then we are off to Florence, AL for a baseball tournament with Peter.

Busy week.

Tiger Woods Golf has grabbed a hold of me. I knew it was a possibility..and it came to pass. Hey DRILLERAA of "Brain Freeze" get that game loaded and practice. Then we can go online and play each other!

The forecast is for rain all week...welcome to springtime in Memphis!

Had some really sad news this weekend. My best friend "A" is suffering from Retinitis Pigmentosa, a crappy disease that has caused "A" to have no peripheral vision.

Recently, "A" received a puppy from some friends and has been working with her. She was the perfect dog for him, perfectly trained.

This last week "A's" mom was in the hospital in Florida and "A" had flown down with his puppy.

The other day while walking, the puppy spooked and jumped off the lease and as she stepped into the street, a car came by. The puppy had to be put to sleep and my best buddy has been suffering sadness since.

He does have a friend who works for the Guide Dogs For The Blind, and "A" has been put on a list for one of the dogs who is rejected from the program. In addition, he has put his name in for a Guide Dog when one becomes available.

This is a huge step for my friend who has had to come to the realization that without a Guide Dog, he is limited as to what he can do.

As he said to me "I could not even come back to Memphis on my own. Going through airports is nearly impossible."

When "A" was here a couple of summers ago, I had to watch out for him when we were on Beale Street. When he bumped into a large gentleman at B.B. King's, the guy - who had quite a few cocktails - was not totally happy, and I had to explain to him.

My fingers are crossed that A" gets a puppy soon to keep him company and a Guide Dog in the near future to give him back some of his freedom.

This certainly fits the weather here in Memphis...

Wednesday Words....

Sparks Of Insanity By Vinny "Bond" Marini Wednesday, December 03, 2008 25 Of Your Sparks

Personally, I think this is HUGE news...but I am disappointed he is not coming anywhere near Memphis...

Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Steve Winwood, recently named one of Rolling Stone magazine's "100 Greatest Singers of All Time," will ring in the New Year with a series of East Coast concert performances in January. Winwood's upcoming East Coast concert dates mark the first U.S. headline tour since 2007 for the legendary rock superstar, who last toured the states with Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers in the summer of 2008.

Winwood is currently enjoying the success of his most recent album, Nine Lives, which entered the Billboard 200 at #12 last May, bringing the artist his highest chart debut, and best first week's sales, of the SoundScan era. Eric Clapton, Winwood's former bandmate in Blind Faith, rock's original "supergroup," lent his signature guitar work to " Dirty City ," the album's first single, which held the #1 added single spot for three weeks in a row and peaked at the overall #2 spot on AAA Radio.

Here are the tour dates...This is something to see folks!

15, 16 - New York, NY - United Palace
17 - Mashantucket, CT - MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods
19 - Baltimore, MD - Meyerhoff Symphony Hall
20 - Montclair, NJ - Wellmont Theatre
22 - Lancaster, PA - American Music Theatre
23 - Niagara Falls, NY - Seneca Niagara Casino Theatre
24 - Kingston, NY - Ulster Performing Arts Center

I wondered if anyone would comment on the picture behind me from yesterday's post. It took Doc Blogstein to do so...On the wall in the background of the first photo there is a framed picture of what looks like you as a short order cook. Whats the story behind that?

Well, Doc...that is actually me in the concession stand from the West Windsor Little League. Older guests know that I ran the concession stand for 6 years (4 of those after Matt had grown out of Little League). The picture is from an article from the Trentonian newspaper. we were hosting a 14-day tournament and I spent pretty much all 14 days in the concession cooking.

In that 14-day time, we netted $14,000.00 for the league!

The picture hangs on a small wall in my bedroom and is basically my "Ego Wall" (some might call it something different)...It is the place I hung pictures and plaques that I received over the years. In the picture from yesterday, you can also see a shot taken on a trail at Aspen Resort in Colorado with my friend Rich and two of his friends.

Ah hell, here is the whole wall, because I just know y'all want to see it! (yeahhhh right!)

click for bigger

OH and NO JAY, the labels
are on the picture...
NOT on the wall itself!

That's it for today folks...well except for some TUNEAGE!!!!!

And we might as well make it some Winwood Tuneage while we are at it! "Gimme Some Lovin'" with Spencer Davis Group and "Dear Mr. Fantasy" from Traffic.

ENJOY!!!!!

Stats and Feelin' Alright...

Sparks Of Insanity By Vinny "Bond" Marini Thursday, September 04, 2008 26 Of Your Sparks

Weird how my comments have gone up and down the last few weeks. Some days I get plenty...others, not so much...

Is it the summer and vacation time? Not sure exactly what is going on, but I see plenty of comments all around the bloggosphere, so maybe it is just that my posts are not so interesting...

I did a nothing post on Tuesday yet my stat counter says there were over 238 individual visits for the day. I seem to get quite a few 'unique visits' each day but don't seem to generate interest in people commenting...
Now, I am not as into the stats thing as I was way back in the beginning when I would check them every day. today was actually the first time in months that I actually went in and looked at what was happening...

Here is what is listed in my keyword analysis as of today (Wednesday):

1 - 8.33% - trix cereal commercial roller coaster
1 - 8.33% - janis joplin back home 66
1 - 8.33% - ac/dc photo 2008
1 - 8.33% - bootleg the doors lost paris tapes
1 - 8.33% - julie taylor dj slough radio
1 - 8.33% - leather blog
1 - 8.33% - information on how janis joplin's song mercedes benz was created, performed, and heard
1 - 8.33% - competition wins for janice waterfall
1 - 8.33% - round leather couch
1 - 8.33% - the ponsonby dcs
1 - 8.33% - doors boot yer butt
1 - 8.33% - new life leather & luggage repair, asbury park, nj 07712

OK, the music I can see, but I am comfuzzled over the visit from the search for 'trix cereal' and 'janice waterfall'...no clue how that brought them to me...I guess I am boring...no searches for sex toys or unusual life-styles bring people here!

People don't seem to spend a long time sitting on The Couch (do I need to fix the cushions...are they too uncomfortable?)

Visit Length

74 - Less than 5 secs
5 - From 5 secs to 30 secs
6 - From 30 secs to 5 mins
0 - From 5 mins to 20 mins
0 - From 20 mins to an hour
1 - Longer than an hour

I use StatCounter for The Couch and right now the total number of visitors it has tracked is 55,655...I can't remember when I put it on The Couch, but I think that is pretty good for a blog that is less than 3 years old...

Now, I have been doing this Entrecard thing recently and I suppose many of those who come around to 'drop their cards' don't really stay...they are hit and run visitors...building up their banks so their blogs are more expensive to 'advertise on'...

Seriously, there are some blogs out there that are over 2,000 credits to put your card on their site, yet when you visit these blogs, they seem to get even fewer comments than I do here on The Couch...

The only other thing I have is the ClusterMap widget, but again I hardly look at it. Interestingly, it has a different number than StatCounter, but S.C. is set to just record 'unique visits'. If you come by more than once a day it does not count you (or it is not supposed to count you) and I have it set that anytime I come on from home I am not counted. Here is what I found today:

Running total of visits to the above URL since 30 Oct 2006: 78,641

You are one of those little red dots...

In the end as a dear friend has said to me a number of times "Are you doing this for 'them' or for yourself?"

Well, of course I am doing this for myself or I would have stopped long ago...but I do wonder how long I would do this if I were getting 10-20 visits and no comments each day.

Why do you blog? Is it for the 'fame' (not putting fortune there)...is it for the sanity it brings you (or insanity as the case may be)...Do you comment every time you visit a blog? What kind of 'special things/widgets' do you do with your blog to gather stats? How closely do you follow your stats? Do you drill down to see where your visitors are coming from?

Mom Joan and Dad Vince arrive today so if I do not get to visit today or tomorrow I will make up for it next week. Tonight is pasta night at Casa Bond - Memphis.

Funny, they did not have internet access for a number of days while on Cape Cod so when I spoke with Dad the other day he said "I spent some time catching up on The Couch and I want to put in a request that we find time to visit Uncle Lou's!" Got his mouth watering...so Nancy and i will be bringing them there sometime Friday.

Also considering going to Holly Springs on Friday (weather permitting - Gustav is drenching us today) for the 2008 Hummingbird Migration Celebration. Holly Springs is a stopping point for these tiny birds as they make their way from Canada to Mexico and Central America for the winter...If we do so, I will be bringing my camera and will (hopefully) be able to share with y'all next week...and YES Fred, I will make sure we get a photo of all of us and I will be saying HI from you to them.

Tomorrow I will be featuring two new musical artists and allow you to rate them. Again, the PR firm has been real interested in your comments and opinions, so please vote in the poll and leave a comment.

Today we leave you with some musical morsels...Joe Cocker with Mad Dogs & Englishmen, one of my all-time favorites and, I believe, the best version of this great Dave Mason song.

The song was originally released while Mason was a member of the
most-excellent band, Traffic. Here is their version:

The song done by it's originator...also a great version

And how the song should not be performed:

Thursday Tidbits...

Sparks Of Insanity By Vinny "Bond" Marini Thursday, August 21, 2008 29 Of Your Sparks

So, France has banned television programs for children under the age of three-years old. The High Audiovisual Council, in a ruling published Wednesday, said it wanted to "protect children under 3 from the effects of television."

France's minister for culture and communication, Christine Albanel, issued a "cry of alarm" to parents in June about channels dedicated 24 hours a day to baby-targeted programming. In a newspaper interview, she called them "a danger" and urged parents not to use them to help their children get to sleep.

No word on whether the French will soon be banning the world from calling them “weak-kneed cowardly sycophants”.
(Let the criticism begin…)

So, Usain Bolt can most certainly wear the title of the “World’s Fastest Man”…additionally, he has also been awarded the titles “Biggest A-Hole in Track” and “Ego-trackster”.

The guy begins his celebrations far before he crosses the finish line and should be taught how to act in victory…
(Let the criticism begin…)

So, sad news regarding LeRoi Moore, the sax player from the Dave Matthews Band. He left us yesterday as a result of injuries he suffered in an ATV accident in June. He was a talented musician and the band will miss his contributions.

So the manager of the New Zealand Men’s Field Hockey team was ejected from their match against Germany the other day because three of his team members were wearing black underwear under their white shorts.

No, you read that correctly…there seems to be a rule that uniforms must be consistent or some crap like that. This is a perfect example of what is wrong with sports today. They regulate the color of your underwear????

On another note…Men’s Field hockey????? Are you messing with me? These guys should be wearing thongs if they are going to be playing Field Hockey. What, couldn't they make the Tiddly-Winks Team in high School???
(Let the criticism begin…)

So you probably know that Heath Ledger was filming Terry Gilliam's "The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus" at the time of his death. Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell stepped in to complete Heath's role, playing different versions of his character "Tim." "Tony" (thanks Starr!)

When the three actors learned that Ledger's will had not been updated to include his daughter, the generous trio decided to donate all the money they earned from the film to little Matilda!

That is very cool and even though I think Jude Law is a turd, I commend him along with Depp and Farrell.

So, is it getting chilly out there again? Seems Norway has posted the following on it’s Defense Ministry’s web site: "Norway has noted that Russia has decided for the time being to 'freeze' all military cooperation with NATO and allied countries,"

Russia is acting like it wants all its territory back (well at least Georgia), and now, if this happens, we might be in for “Cold War 2 – Ruskies Revenge”.

So, you have to love Forbes…they come up with these lists that just make you shake your head…two I came upon yesterday made me laugh. The first is “10 Most Overpriced Zip Codes In The US”. Can you guess?
  1. Willow Glen, San Jose, CA
  2. Rose City Park, Portland, OR
  3. Greenway Parks Devonshire, Dallas, TX
  4. Coronado, Phoenix, AZ
  5. Outer Sunset, San Francisco, CA
  6. Mission Hills, San Diego, CA
  7. West Hollywood, Los Angeles, CA
  8. Downtown, Seattle, WA
  9. Chinatown, Boston, MA
  10. Tribeca, New York, NY
The second was “The Worst Cities For Commuters In The US”…OK, think about that…
  1. San Francisco, CA
  2. Los Angeles, CA
  3. Houston, TX
  4. Washington, DC
  5. Tampa, FL
  6. Dallas, TX
  7. Orlando, FL
  8. Miami, FL
  9. Detroit, MI
  10. Atlanta, GA
I was surprised to not see Boston or New York on this list. People always complain about New York, but if you are smart, you use the great public transportation there. Boston is a total nightmare IMHO, even worse than New York. I have experienced Atlanta traffic and it is horrendous for sure. I thought people moved to Florida to RETIRE! LOL But they have 3 of the top 10.

I think this is one of my all time favorite Allman brothers songs...one that does not get much notice..."Please Call Home" from the IDLEWILD SOUTH album released in September of 1970. This is from vinyl and there are a few pops left...can't get 'em all.

ENJOY...

Drivin' In My Car....

Sparks Of Insanity By Vinny "Bond" Marini Wednesday, December 26, 2007 28 Of Your Sparks

TIME TO DONATE SOME RICE TODAY!
<-----------------------------------------------

Build your vocabulary, feed the hungry...
11,470,275,730 grains donated at this point...

So...in the car 5:45 am...dark sky, but we are ready. A Pepsi sitting in the drink holder, six bottles of our specially formulated grape water in the cooler along with two chicken cutlet sandwiches...

The 6-disc CD changer is loaded and off we go...

Cruise up I-78 to I-240 and across the bridge into Arkansas, onto I-40...cruising along to the CD button and the DEREK TRUCKS band begins playing...the sun is rising and, with no traffic on the road we are cruising...We jump on I-440 toward Texarkana...

We get to Little Rock in record time and glance at the Mapquest instructions...'Take US-65S / US-167 S / I-530 S...ok, no problem with that...

THEN IT HAPPENS...ALLMAN BROTHERS begin... damn!

"Ain't Wastin' Time No More"
Gregory L. Allman
ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND
Eat A Peach

Eyes scroll across to look at the miles to be traveled...'304.8' ... back to the music...

About a half hour later and....Hey Look, we are coming up on the "Mike Huckabee Nature Center" in a few miles...Wonder if Matt-Man knows about this place...hehehehe

Then the signs we have seen in other states..."State Penitentiary - Beware of Hitchhikers"...ummmm like we would even consider stopping to pick up some grungy guy in a bright orange jumpsuit...They actually think they have to warn us about this stuff?

And why do these two signs show up at the same time????

15 minutes later...the highway ends and becomes a small country road...just outside of Pine Bluff....OOPS

OH MAN DID YOU SCREW UP
OH MY HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?
HE IS AN IDJIT YOU CLOWN!
NO NO, IT MUST HAVE BEEN AN ERROR ON THE DIRECTIONS...
YEAAAAAAAAH SURE...JUST LIKE ON THE WAY TO BIRMINGHAM, HUH?
OH NOW, THAT WAS THE SEAT DANCING BY ONE MS. ANNDI THAT DID THAT...
UH HUH.....

Quick look at the directions... OH damn... we were only supposed to be on that road for 0.2 miles and then were supposed to get onto I-30 for that '304.5' miles...

We pull into a small store and look at Jean... "Excuse me, I think we may have missed a turn-off, we wanted to be on I-30 out of Little Rock"

"Oh yeah, you did", (is that a smirk on her face? Did we hear her mumble 'damn Yankee'? Doesn't she know we are a Memphian? No really, look at our license plates)

"So, should I get back on 560 and hit it that way?"

"No dear, that would be the long way, go onto 560 and then take 270...and you will hit I-30"

"OH OK, thanks.."

Back in the car and onto I-560, there is Huckapoo-poo's Nature Center again and the sign about hitch-hikers... (well look, he is not in an orange jumpsuit and that axe he is carrying does not look too sharp, maybe we should stop....) and they are back to back again... is that guy with the axe Hucka-poo-poo and why does he have a sign that says "BAGWINE OR DROP" with him?

We find State Road 270 she told us about...sure - a 2-lane blacktop that goes through towns with populations of 165 and 220 ...heading west toward I-30...behind a pick-up truck made in 1935 probably...argggggg

When we hit I-30 we were about 47 miles south of Little Rock...an 81 mile detour that took about 2 hours...ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

OK, back on track, let's make up some time now...cruising at 75 - 80mph ... and the rains come...pouring, can't see more than 5 feet in front of us rain...it lasted until we made it to Texarkana..but averaging about 71 miles an hour for that part of the trip...

Cross into Texas and the sun comes out and the temperature gauge for outside reads 71 degrees... WOOOOOOOOO

We are cruising...traffic is light...onto I-635 just west of Dallas and what do we spot...a Steak & Shake, so we pull off for one of their yummy side-by-side Banana/Strawberry shakes. Get out of the car and WTF!!!!! it is freezing...has to be about 40 degrees and the wind is howling...

Grab the shake and hit the highway again and jump onto I-35E South (yeah...we could not figure out what E and South were doing together either, but hey...we are cruising...)

And then it begins...about 30 miles south, traffic STOPS...not a crawl...a dead stop...then move 2 feet and stop...then two feet and stop...and this goes on for about an hour...and we make it about 2 miles to the intersection of I-35 South...OOOOO no East, South...and we begin to drive again...

Just outside of Waco just near the almost completed Willie Nelson Bio-Diesel Rest Stop (On the road again, you have to use corn again...it is good for the environment, and I make even more money and you can be on the road again...who can use this stuff? I do not care I am just selling it...I hope you all come on in and use spend some money on my gifts and then get back on the road again..)

...bam...dead stop...and we crawl for about 20 miles...no signs of construction...no accidents...just like everyone in the world heading south...the north-bound lanes..flowing smoothly...(Anyone hear of a nuclear attack on Dallas? Are all these people going to visit relatives in Mexico for the holidays? WTF is going on???)

We even jump on the service road at one point to get out of the traffic and that does help...then as fast as it stopped...the traffic begins moving again...cruising at 70mph...

Just outside of Austin...you got it! Dead stop...and we crawl for 10-15 miles ...and then we are back up to speed...

Now, all y'all know how patient we are..right? RIGHT?

YEAH PATIENT ...YOU MUST MEAN MENTAL PATIENT...

This is just ticking us off to no end...but we are cruising and there should be no reason why it should happen again...

DAMN...outside of San Antonio...DEAD FREAKING STOP...and crawl...crawl...crawl...

And then...yup, you go it...traffic begins to flow again...no rhyme or reason for it..

Pull into brother Rich's drive FIFTEEN HOURS after leaving...What mapquest says should be an 11 hour drive (which we interpret to mean 10 hours - they are always off in time)...tired as all hell...

SIL Cindy greets us with a Jack on the rocks at the door! LOL..and we sit and talk for a while and then we hit the bed for 10 hours of sleep...

Sunday evening they had a cocktail party...about 30 people..friends (some of whom we know well) and co-workers...and some kick ass egg nog (now, we have never ever been an egg nog person, but this stuff rocked)...

Christmas Eve day, we were in the kitchen cooking with Cindy from about 10:00 am until 3:30...a feast fit for royalty...and then off to Church...

The meal was fan-tabulous....we ate and drank until about midnight...only problem is the bottle of Sambuca they had , had gone bad... It was opened two years ago when yours truly was here and not touched since..but yukkkko..it was spoiled...very weird...

Christmas morning we are up with my nieces at about 9:00 am and opening presents and I am surprised with a gift from Richard and Cindy and sister Lynn and BIL Kevin (we have not exchanged gifts in a few years, only giving to the nieces and nephews)...well these four decided that since we were the last person on earth without one, we needed an i-pod Touch... so very very cool...we were SHOCKED...SHOCKED WE SAY....

Ummm...well..one small problem...our i-Mac is too old and will not work with it...so we will need to upgrade before we can put our Tuneage on it, unless we use the work computer for a while, but then everything we load will go bye bye when we switch computers...hummmm...

Sitting here on Wednesday and trying to get some work done (YES, we are supposed to be on vacation...sheesh) and writing this to tell you of our adventures...

Tonight we go with Rich to see the San Antonio Spurs vs. the Chicago Bulls (hey, we saw the Bulls when we were here two years ago also!)...

Then tomorrow at about 5:30 am, we hit the road again...this time taking I-10 toward Houston and then into Louisiana to I-55 and up through Mississippi....

Now if there is this unknown traffic...we might implode...

Hope all y'all had a wonderful holiday...

Words For Wednesday - Figurine

Sparks Of Insanity By Vinny "Bond" Marini Wednesday, July 18, 2007 33 Of Your Sparks

Our good friend TRAVIS does what he calls "WORDS FOR WEDNESDAY", as opposed to Wordless Wednesday.

We like his idea we have never been one to be silent here on THE COUCH.

This short story has been sitting on our computer for about a month now. It wrote itself one day while we were eating lunch at our desk. Inspiration comes when it comes...

We hope you enjoy...

WE CALL IT:

"FIGURINE"

He looked at the mantle above the fireplace and sighed. The space next to the plant was vacant. No, not just vacant, there was a hole…a void, a hollowness that he could not believe.

The figurine was the most beautiful piece he had ever laid eyes on. That day, two years ago when he was ambling through the shops was beautiful, sun shining, the sky a rich cloudless blue…he will always remember the day, no matter how many more he walked the earth.

Not looking for anything special, he was just enjoying himself, treating himself to a day alone. Then he saw it. It was hidden with a number of other less desirable figurines. They were all special in their own way, but this one…well, this one sparkled.

He reached out carefully, his fingertips touching one of the others, and feeling the cold of it’s surface. They wrapped around this special one and he could feel his fingertips begin to tingle. This was a special gift. There was no doubt.

The marble, normally cold to the touch, was awash in a warmth he did not think possible...It was almost frightening to him how wonderful this figurine felt. Could anything be this good? Could anything hold this much warmth?

Lifting it slowly, he turned it over in his hands, examining it and allowing himself to be swallowed by its beauty. As he turned it to look at the bottom, his heart dropped. There on the bottom was a tiny sticker. One word written in the scratchy hand of the store owner, he presumed. The one word..."SOLD".

Walking over to the counter where the old man sat, silently reading the morning paper, he spoke up, “Excuse me?” the man spoke quietly. The shop owner looked up and smiled, and then his eyes trailed to the figurine in the customers hand and his eyes saddened, but just for an instant.

“Can I help you young man?” the old man spoke. His voice was rough, but filled with a wisdom that was unmistakable.

“Yes, I saw this incredible figurine and I have fallen in love with it. But, I see it says “sold” on the bottom. Is this true? If it is sold, why is it still on the shelf?”

“Well, you see son, a man did buy that figurine. He paid in cash and told me he would be returning that day to pick it up. I have not seen him again, but since he paid, I need to keep the sticker on and not resell it. I am sorry, there are many other fine figurines here, maybe we can find you anoth…”

“No, that is fine. This is the one I want. If it is not for sale, then I shall move on and continue my day.”

With that, he walked out of the shop, a quick glance backward allowing him to see the shop owner tenderly replacing the figurine where it had been before…

That night he had a dream of the figurine. His dream showed him holding the figurine, showing his friends, bragging about how special it was and how it was all his.

When he woke he knew he had to have it. He began to stop back every day and ask the shop owner if he could buy it. Eventually, the old man would have to capitulate and allow him to own this beautiful object.

Every day he stopped. Every day he looked and held the figurine. Every day the shop owner tried to sell him another figurine, and refused to sell the one he truly wanted.

Then, one day he stopped by and nodded to the owner. The owner gave him a smile and the man wondered why it seemed different today. He walked over to the table and slowly lifted the object of his desire. It once again tingled in his fingertips as he held it. It was warm to his touch…and it felt different. He could not figure out how and why, but immediately he knew there was a difference.

Slowly, ever so slowly he tilted the precious item in his hand and looked at the bottom. It was empty. No little sticker…no scratchy handwriting.

His head shot up and turned to look at the old man behind the counter. The old man sat smiling, his eyes sparkling…"Yes, young man…it is for sale again. The gentleman who purchased it came in yesterday and told me he could not purchase it. He didn’t even ask for his money back…he just told me and turned and walked out of the store."

The man looked again at the figurine. Could it be true? Was he really about to finally own this incredible piece? He looked at the owner and said “Name your price, anything…it is worth it.”

The store owner quoted the price of the figurine. The man was shocked. It was expensive, no doubt, but in the end he would have paid triple the price. This is the one piece he had always imagined owning...and that dream was about to become reality.

That was a year ago now…and today, sitting on his couch looking at the emptiness of the mantle, he cried. Long, hard tears flowed down his face…how could it be? How could it have been taken from him?

He wondered if he were to blame. When he first brought the figurine home, he worshiped it. Every morning he would walk over to the mantle and gently touch the figurine. Every evening just before he got into bed he did the same. Every day…day after day….

About a month ago, something had come up in the morning and hen he left for work, he forgot to touch his figurine. He thought of it on his ride to work and even throughout the day. That night when he got home he walked directly to the mantle and whispered “I am sorry for leaving you alone for the day.”

But it happened once or twice more over the next couple of weeks. It was not that he loved his figurine any less; on the contrary, his love for it only grew stronger and stronger every day. His mind was distracted by problems with family and work. When he sat at night he always had a view of the figurine.

He had a couple of days away and was not there to touch his figurine. He missed it awfully and would close his eyes and picture it sitting there.

When he arrived home yesterday, he walked directly to the mantle and looked...and his heart sank. It was gone…

He looked all over his house…he knew he had not moved it, but he had to look anyway.

NOTHING!

He called for help, but no one he spoke with could give him an answer.

It was gone. Someone had come and taken it from right under his nose. Someone else was touching his figurine. Someone else was enjoying its beauty. Someone else was smiling, as the tears flowed down his face.

The next day he went to the shop and when he walked in the owner looked up at him. The man felt strange, there was no recognition in the owner's eyes, surely he could not have forgotten me already, could he?

“Hello, may I help you?” the shop owner spoke.

“Yes, the figurine I bought from you was stolen the other day and I am very saddened by it. I was wondering if you knew if there was another one like it anywhere.”

“You must be mistaken; I do not remember selling you any figurine. I remember you coming in and admiring one, but it was sold I told you that. I was just waiting for the owner to come back. ”

“Yes, yes, and I kept coming back every day and finally, you sold it to me a year ago...a stunningly beautiful figurine…please can you help me, where can I find one like it?”

"As far as another one like it, that was a one-of-a-kind piece. There are none like it anywhere." The owner continued, "Son, you never bought that figurine. The man who purchased it came back in and picked it up. He apologized for being delayed, but was excited to see I had not sold it and he was able to walk out of the shop with it. He was really beaming.”

“BUT, you sold it to ME!” the man cried….

“Sorry son, I think you must have imagined that last part. I could never sell you something that belonged to another…”

The man walked out of the shop just as it began to rain. All around him people were scurrying here and there to not get wet, but he just walked, head down, staring at the spot on the sidewalk where his next step would land.

The rain poured down on him, soaking every inch of fabric on his body, but nothing was as wet as his face from the tears streaming from his eyes…and he just walked…and walked…and walked…

Take a walk down by, take a walk down by the river
There's a lot that you, there's a lot that you can learn
If you've got a mind that's open, if you've got a heart that yearns

If you listen to, if you listen to the water
You will hear the sound, you will hear the sound of life
There's a million different voices, there is happiness and strife

Message in the deep, from a strange eternal sleep
That is waiting there, that is waiting there for you
Like hidden treasure
