This is from April 1980, Radio City Music Hall in NYC. Chuck Mangione was HUGE at that point and his show was actually most excellent.

YUP, there is some red in that shot! LOLOL and remember the photo will get bigger if you clickity click.
I first saw Chuck in Rochester, while going to school there. I actually saw a show at a small club and could only find one other person who would go with me. Jazz was not, ummm...groovy enough...
A little history about Chuck...
Charles Frank "Chuck" Mangione (born November 29, 1940) is an American flugelhorn player and composer who achieved international success in 1978 with his jazz-pop single, "Feels So Good". Mangione has released more than 30 albums since 1960.
Born and raised in Rochester, New York, Mangione and his pianist brother Gap led the Jazz Brothers group which recorded three albums for Riverside Records. He attended the Eastman School of Music from 1958 to 1963, and afterward joined Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, for which he filled the trumpet seat, previously held by greats such as Clifford Brown, Kenny Dorham, Bill Hardman, and Lee Morgan.
Mangione served as director of the Eastman Jazz Ensemble from 1968 to 1972, and in 1970, he returned to recording with the album Friends and Love, recorded in concert with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and numerous guest performers.
His quartet with saxophonist Gerry Niewood was a popular concert and recording act throughout the 1970s. "Bellavia", recorded during this collaboration, won Mangione his first Grammy.
Mangione's composition "Chase the Clouds Away" was used in the 1976 Olympic Games, with a later composition, "Give It All You Got", being used as the theme to the 1980 Winter Olympic Games, held in Lake Placid, New York. He performed it live at the closing ceremonies, which were televised globally.
And did you know that in addition to music Chuck Mangione has had a recurring voice-acting role on the animated television series King of the Hill? In it he portrays himself as a celebrity spokesman for Mega Lo Mart, although his animated form looks much younger than his age would indicate.

Live on Tuesday October 7 at 9PM ET and forever archived at BlogTalkRadio.)
Dr. B and Dangerous Lee will tackle an issue of major importance: What’s on? Zap2It.com TV columnist Korbi Ghosh stops by to tell us which TV shows we should be watching and which shows to ignore.
Is Knight Rider worth our attention? Will 90210 worth the commitment? Should we stick with Heroes? And what’s a chick that looks like this doing spending all that time in front of the television?
Then, the band Miles To Empty has been heating up the Vegas strip since they’ve added a new bassist to the band. Ryan, Mikey, Nate and Norberto will take a break from practice to fill their fans in on what’s going on with the rising rockers.
Also, mashugana author Michael Wex will schlep himself over to give us a crash course in Yiddush.
The author of Just Say Nu: Yiddish for Every Occasion (When English Just Won’t Do) will give us his uncensored shpiel on the language so we can tell the difference between a putz, a svants and a schmuck and learn that calling Dangerous Lee a “shviger” isn’t nearly as bad as it sounds.
All that, plus Vinny Bond drags his Big Leather Couch into the Radio Happy Hour Lounge to chat live with the listeners, Shawn Amos returns with another GetBack.com Pop Quiz, Justin the Weatherman and we’ll take your calls at 646-652-4804.
Join us live every Tuesday night at 9PM ET. The Radio Happy Hour Lounge-a live, interactive chat room during show time! It’s the show within the show!

Jazz is my first musical love, and Chuck Mangione? *swoons*
Chuck was big then. Tying that pic into Ruby Tuesday cracks me up. And I have NO idea why...
DANA: Glad you enjoyed...Chick is the bomb
BUD: You have to come back and explain why...
As far as horn players go, I have always been more of a fan of Maynard Ferguson. Cheers Vinny!!
I always thought Chuck Mangione was pretty cool. Although anytime anyone mentions him now I think of the episode of King of the Hill where Chuck is living behind a wall of toilet paper in the Mega-Lo-Mart. haha
Chuck reminds me of the marching band. Who knows.
Jay's comment made me lol
Feels So Good aka The Luke and Laura song. I just hope I am not the only who knows wtf I am talking about.
True story. When I was around 10 my bad influence father and I spliced John Belushi's "What do ya want for nothing....rubber biscuit?" into the middle of a whole bunch of songs on my moms tapes. Chuck was one of the defiled.
Boy did Dad get a smack down!
90210 remake sucks and just NO to Night Rider.
I've always liked Chuck...since back in the Tonight Show (JOHNNY) days - great picture also!
ha - bit too subtle for me so far - bring on the trumpets! Ooh - there it goes. I'm loving the brass feature!
I had my first flugel outing last week (not sure how much of a good idea it is playing an instrument in recital you've never played in practise). It's fun to play but you can't get any attack or front to the sound - which is weird for a trumpet player. Gotta play it again on Sunday.
wow - see what you mean about the explosion! (clicked the link to Ruby Tues)
MATT-MAN: And here I thought you would be more a Maynard G. Krebs fan
JAY: Ah what popular culture does to our icons
TURNBABY: I take that as a no likey then
STARR: I DO I Do! I agree on both TV programs and you and dad are sooooo bad!
TUG: Thanks and yeah, he still does it for me
TOPCHAMP: We can let you re-mix the sound! LOL...and yup...RT is HUGE!
Man, it's been forever since I thought about Chuck Mangione!
Nice photo for a Ruby Tuesday though.
The Yiddish for every occasion sounds like a good read.
Thanks for the shout!
I was never much of a Mangione fan. But I will admit that my sampling of his music is quite small. I did enjoy the piece you had posted here today though.
Awesome RT Vin! Hey got the DVD thanks man!
travis does a great recap!!
I love your red shot
I love that red shot, too! It rocks when it's all big!
Oh my...that Ester has a fabulous voice!!!!
Oh and I REALLY needed to listen to such a lovely song after such a trying blog evening!
