What I Did On My Summer Vacation...

Sparks Of Insanity By Vinny "Bond" Marini Monday, August 04, 2008

What a cool vacation. Thanks for the notes during the week. I posted them, but really did stay away from blogging and reading.

So? What did I do???

First I jumped a plane to Las Vegas where I took $5,000 and put it on 16-Red. The croupier gave the wheel a big spin and then spit the little white ball out along it's journey from between his thumb and forefinger.

The wheel spinning one direction, the little white ball speeding in the other. My eyes followed the ball as my mind tried to gauge the rate the wheel was slowing down. I also tracked the position of my 16-Red slot on the wheel.

Time stood still...and then the ball bounced along, the wheel coming to a stop and the ball took four final bounces and found itself sitting in 16-RED!

35-1 payout, I took my new found riches and hoped a plane for Hawaii where I spent 5 glorious days basking in the sun and playing in the sand and surf...

Or, I caught a summer-cold beginning on Sunday making me extremely tired all day long. Monday I boarded a plane for Dallas for a meeting on Tuesday with the new Ad Agency.

Dinner Monday was great except I could not taste a bite of what I was eating. Then I never slept Monday night, coughing and sneezing all night. Tuesday morning I woke and went to the gym in the Marriott and tried to sweat it out of me...did not work.

When we got to the meeting I took a seat on the end of the table. I had a whole box of tissues in preparation. I spent much of the meeting turning my chair and sneezing and blowing my nose. Nice first impression for some of those people I am sure!

Flew home and just wanted to get home. I let my mind wander and 100 yards from the entrance into my community I got hit with a speeding ticket...12 miles over the limit! When I tried to explain and showed my gold "Family Member P.B.A. Card", the officer in question stated, "I don't know what that is" and walked back to his car and wrote me up...$49.00.

Drank some night time cold medicine and fell asleep early. When I woke on Wednesday I was still really congested with a headache. But I sat at the computer and started reading the pages I had. I began editing and deleting and cutting and pasting and then the new words flowed about Frank Stevens.

I wrote for about 6 hours in total, including time for research and realizing my timeline was screwed up, so I had to make major changes regarding dates events happened.

Thursday and Friday it was about Travis Wolfe and Gary Burton and Mimi Weiser and Brad Hill and Julie Caffrey and Nancy Peters and LeeAnn Barton and Margaret Stevens and many other characters. Some have major roles, some are just citizens inhabiting the world I am creating.

I worked about 6 hours each day. The Gary Burton portions having to be rewritten when I took a left instead of a right turn...ah plot-twists...

Friday evening I got to see darlin' Nancy and the boys who returned from their trip to Pigeon Forge and some days of water park, hiking the Smokey's and white-water rafting.

On Saturday after Peter had a successful tryout for a new baseball team, the four of us were off to the wedding of Nancy's niece. It was a lovely affair.

Saturday night we relaxed and watched some television.

On Sunday I cleaned my closet and drawers in my dresser - I could not find something and one thing led to another and before you knew it...well reorganization!

Then Nancy came over and we ate antipasto and drank wine and caught up alone after being apart this past week.

Now which do you believe? LOL

I actually did well with the writing and have a solid 110 pages at the moment. The story line is about 1/4 - 1/3 complete, so I still have work to do but I am feeling better about this now than I have in a while...

Also cool was the whole time I was writing I just let iTunes shuffle and I heard many things that I forgot I had!

Well, that is what I did on my MINI-Summer Vacation....

OH and one more thing...bought tickets to see The Allman Brothers on September 27th at Bluesville, the same small venue Nancy and I saw B.B. King. We will not be as close, but our seats are still superb.

Let's celebrate that, shall we? This is from a live concert at American University, Washington, D.C., December 13, 1970. The concert was released on CD a few years back. It is the Allman's as they were just starting out a short year after getting together in Macon and finding their mojo..

"You Don't Love Me"

ENJOY...

  2. I need new glasses! I just read that you jumped out of a plane, before checking as that didn't sound entirely likely in the context.

For a moment I thought I'd got it all muddled up and you weren't writing but were going on holiday. I'm easily confused.

Nice to have you back - Now if you guys were HERE Sept 27th you could see me in Manchester or Carlisle (think it's maybe Carlisle actually) instead. Enjoy the gig.

  4. Despite the summer cold (I'm just kicking one myself right now) it sounds like all-in-all not a bad mini-vaca! I'm eager to read the results of your work.

    Welcome back!

  6. So nice to have you back!! Sounds like a busy but productive week. I missed you! (My brother is a Dallas ad man and sick as a dog with summer cold -- maybe you know him?) Nice song selection this morning!

  7. Wow. I was about to congratulate you on your $175,000 payoff - then I realized what was going on.

Congratulations on the progress with the book.

Sorry that you didn't get to make the trip to the Smokies with them. Perhaps you and Nancy can make a trip (just the two of you - and the hundreds of other folks) in the fall when the colors are nice and it's a bit cooler.

  31. Sounds like by mid-week things took a turn for the better.

I have one of those PBA cards - comes from staying friends for 30 years with the cop I almost married and I've never had a cop disregard it. Not even NJ cops when it's a NY card. I think that cop might have had a summer cold ;)

    Welcome Back!
Must feel great that the book is moving forward.

  32. Angell Says:
  33. Wow Vinny. Summer cold - that sux buddy. I feel for ya, I really do.

Hey - I was hoping that the first one was the real vacation...I'll bet you were too huh? :P

Glad to hear that the writing is going well. I love it when I manage to get even an hour of writing done, so six hours in one day would be FABULOUS for me.

Of course I have no discipline anyway...:D

WELCOME BACK. Hugs, smooches and all the good (cyber) stuff.

  34. Ralph Says:
  35. Darlin' Nancy is better than 35-1 any day! I will not vouch for the veracity of the Vegas tale. It sounds perfectly plausible. Honest!

But the best of stories deserves to be embellished, and in Vegas/Hawaii, you succeeded.

Who doesn't get a cold on vacation?

  36. leelee Says:
  37. WELCOME BACK MY FRIEND....missed ya. and now am extremely green about your seeing the Allmans...they so rock...

    yay..you're back!

    HUGS!!

  38. Travis Cody Says:
  39. HA! I knew about the cold and I still almost believed the Vegas story. LOL!

    Tough news about the ticket.

Congratulations on getting so much writing done. Now you just have to figure out how to manage your time so you can schedule an hour or so a day and keep going.

  40. left you a little something something over at my blog
