Ruby Tuesday - Ellis Island...Sonny & Brownie

Sparks Of Insanity By Vinny "Bond" Marini Tuesday, August 12, 2008

Welcome to another addition of RUBY TUESDAY - click on the logo above to head over to The Teach's blog to see all the entries this week.

Well we are getting into the way-back machine today. The summer of 1999, Mom Joan, Dad Vince, Brother Richard and SIL Cindy, Sister Lynn and BIL Kevin, me and the ex and all the grand kids took on New York City for a day. It was a whirlwind that brought us out to Ellis Island (I had never been there), then to the Empire State Building and then to Little Italy (what is left of it, Chinatown has grown and taken over much of what was Little Italy) for a great meal.

Anyway...we went to Ellis island and saw my grandparents name on the wall...(the families have to pay for inclusion).

I got this shot of Matt and his cousins Candice and Joseph. Now remember, Matt is going to be a Junior this year and Candice and Joseph are entering Freshman. If I weren't feeling so good from going to the gym 5 days a week I might feel old!

Not the greatest picture. Working on the old Mac in Photoshop has gotten tedious it is so slow...I have not been able to swing buying the bundle for the new Mac...so as I am doing this post, I am downloading Gimp onto the new Mac. Roger swears by it, so I thought I would give it a shot.

Yeah and maybe the sign is not BRIGHT RED, but it is reddish in color...so sue me!

Scrubs returns for its eighth season next month but will now be seen on ABC.

I am in an off-site meeting working on plans for our 2009 campaign all day, so if I don't get to visit you, I will catch up Wednesday.

Thanks to all those who left their opinion of the artists we featured on Friday. I am going to try it again this week, only featuring two this time.

These two gentlemen were my first real lesson in the Delta Blues. Freshman year at college working one of my late shift radio shows and just searching through the racks of albums. The names on the side of the jacket looked cool. Let's give it a listen...So I put the needle down on the vinyl and the sweetest sound filled my ears.

I was hooked...Mr. Sonny Terry (October 24, 1911 - March 11, 1986) and Mr. Brownie McGhee (November 30, 1915 - February 16, 1996) on guitar.

This is "Midnight Special", the way the music gods intended - in my opinion...

19 Of Your Sparks

  1. DrillerAA Says:
  2. Love the song. I get visions of "O Brother, Where Art Thou" and the Soggy Bottom Boys.

  3. Sparky Duck Says:
  4. It is reddish

  5. Jay Says:
  6. I think it would be interesting to visit Ellis Island. On the website we found my great grandmother's name and when she came to this country, but we've never been able to find my great grandfather. He came over from Ireland and lived in Elizabeth New Jersey for many years. You would think that he came through Ellis Island too, but maybe not.

  7. A different kind of post for RT..

  8. Bud Fisher Says:
  9. Great pix of the kids. Boy, they do grow up fast!

  10. Ralph Says:
  11. The harmonica nearly replicates the cadence of the train wheels. And being acoustic and not over-produced like more modern music.

I almost hear the 'choo-choo' on the guitar also. No additional sound effects required. Excellent!

  12. DRILLERAA: These guys lived it!

    SPARKY: yup reddish

JAY: It is really a great tour.

RAMBLING: Thanks for coming y...my posts are ALWAYS different

BUD: Yes they do..thank you Sir

RALPH: YES YES YES YES...you got it exactly...these two guys were BRILLIANT together...

  13. Travis Cody Says:

  21. Vinny, great RT post! Who said it had to be BRIGHT RED. Someone did pink this week! My sister-in-law has their family name up on Ellis Island. Great shot of the kids! Happy Ruby Tuesday! :)

  22. Ok don't hate me, but I like CCR's as well as this version if not more. I just loves me some CCR.

  23. TRAVIS: I tried to stop them, but I failed

TUG: The layering is not too hard... ask if you need help

    ROGER: TY Sir

    DIANNE: Thanks

TEACH: Mary Thank you and cool...can I go blue too? Nah I don't think so LOL

STARRLIGHT: OK, you might just have lost your seat on The Couch for that! LOL

nah CCR's version is cool...but I just loves me Brownie and Sonny...

  24. It's a great song and both versions are great. Of course the definative is Lead Belly's =)

  25. OOH I just remembered! A suggestion for Tutelage. Big Mama Thornton. Seeing as you are in Graceland and all I thought that would be a fun one to cover. I am betting most folks don't know the origins of that song or her original version =)

  26. STARR: True dat about Lead bellys
As far as Big Mama Thornton, I am void of enough music to feature her...i have to see what i can gather first.

  27. Well when I get around to getting the complete vanguard recordings I'll help ya out. Perhaps a segment on little known blues singers. Big Maybelle, Ruth Brown and Big Mama Thornton.

  28. Tug Says:
  29. Help?!
