We ended up at the Grizzlies home opener against the World Champion San Antonio Spurs. Griz played a pretty decent game, though we think the Spurs could have been had tonight. They opened last night at home and had the ring ceremony and raised the banners and all... Then after the game, they HAD to celebrate right?

NOW, MAYBE THEY DID NOT CELEBRATE KNOWING THERE WAS A GAME TONIGHT.
ARE YOU KIDDING? WE'RE TALKING BASKETBALL PLAYERS HERE...THOSE GUYS PROBABLY EACH HAD FOUR WOMEN...
NOW NOW, BE NICE...THAT IS VERY MEAN...
CLAMP IT SHUT GOODY-TWO SHOES..EVEN THIS GUY KNOWS I KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT...

Will you two PLEASE calm down ...it is late and we need to finish some kind of a post today...

Well, anyway...we are not huge pro basketball fans, but the seat were cool...got the tickets at the last minute and with it being Halloween, people had kids to deal with or plans, so we ended up going alone. First time we were ever in the Fed-Ex...

Someone please tell me, I know that the last pro game we went to was in San Antonio 2 years ago. We have watched it here and there on TV...BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At the Fed-Ex, whenever the Grizzlies are on defense there is the obligatory da da clap da da clap sound effect...or the DE-FENCE chat over the P.A. system...We've got that, but what we are used to is a more reserved use of sound effects when the home team has the ball.

At the Fed-Ex, when the Grizzlies have the ball, they play MUSIC...not sound effects, but pieces of MUSIC! We are talking about rock and roll and light rap, and for no apparent reason other than to make sure there is noise...BUT WHILE THE OFFENSE HAS THE BALL????

Sorry, we are 'more mature' than most of you, but we remember going to basketball games and yes, you had the organ...and it did many of the sounds we hear recreated digitally now, but they were more filler then a constant soundtrack...Like the sound of sneakers scraping the floor, and being able to hear the players talking to each other (even in the higher seats in some of the old arenas)...

WHERE THE HELL DID THIS RANT COME FROM?
WILL YOU JUST PLEASE HUSH...HE IS ON A ROLL AND I AM TIRED.
HUSH UP?? WHAT THE HELL IS HUSH UP? TIRED? C'MERE AND I WILL KNOCK YOU INTO TOMORROW...

Will you PLEASE!

Where were we? OH yeah... the need to have constant entertainment...and it is really not just at basketball games, it is at football and hockey and YES!!! even at baseball games. Thought there is no use of sound effects while the ball is actually in play.

Why can't the American sporting public be entertained by what is going on during the game.

With golf, you actually have the total opposite...total silence.

With NASCAR, it is so damn loud from the cars that sound effects would be pretty incidental.

Football, hockey and baseball use the 'crowd chant' sound effects between plays, but this new thing we experienced last night during a basketball game was just a bit too much for us...

THAT'S IT? THAT'S ALL YA GOT DUDE?
WILL YOU PLEASE JUST ALLOW HIM TO FINISH.
HE IS FINISHED...THE GUY HAS NOTHING..
I AM SURE HE DOES...

WELL...MAYBE ALL THEY ARE TRYING TO DO BY PLAYING SO MUCH MUSIC AND SOUND EFFECTS IS TO DROWN OUT THIS GUY:

BUT I LOVE THAT GUY!!!!!!!!!!! I AM THAT GUY!!!!!!!!

Hell, we have used it before....but ....

9 Of Your Sparks

  1. Travis Cody Says:
  2. I've heard about this playing of music or sound effects through the entire game, even when the home team has possession.

    I don't like it.

It's fine to flash signs up on these big scoreboards that say "Make Noise" or whatever. But when the ball is in play, there should be no electronic sound effects of any kind.

I don't remember any of that at a Laker game.

Peeps pay a lot of money to go and watch these athletes. It's not a floor show and it's not a concert. It's a ball game.

I'll get off my soapbox now.

  3. Um, wasn't that three voices?

Well, you know, I am boycotting the NBA this year, but when it comes to actual attendance at sports competitions, I have most recently been to NBA games and MLB games. I think our MLB games are much quieter, but the NBA games are very much like a circus atmosphere at times.

Of course, when our NBA team is on offense, it's difficult not to get excited when the ball is in the hands of Steve Nash. The man has made the assist into an art form and makes them a beauty to behold.

    Just my $0.02, though.

  4. Schmoop Says:
  5. Steve Nash rocks Songbird...I never used to watch the NBA, now because of my son I do. Good Luck to the Grizzlies Bond. Cheers!!

  6. TRAVIS: Rant on brotha...I really was sitting there saying 'man i remember even in the old Madison Square Garden, sitting in the rafters, being able to hear the squeak of the sneakers and the coaches shouting plays and the players jawing at each other...and now all I hear is guitar riffs and drum beats....

SONGBIRD: Just two in my head...the other one is mine dear...MLB is quieter...can you imagine a fly ball hit to the outfield and the speakers begin blarring DUM DUM DUM DUM... sheesh...Nash is pretty special.yup...and that was much more than $0.02 - worth much more...

MATT-MAN: Thanks for stopping by dude...

  7. Angell Says:
  8. And the voices keep coming - FABULOUS.

I don't go to basketball games cuz the Raps want WAY too much dough for one ticket, and the only ones I can afford my fat ass can't fit in.

But I know what you're saying about the music, how is that NOT distracting?

    Luv the tunage as always.

    SMOOCHES.

  9. ANGELL: keep coming? you think they come and go???? not on your life!
Way too distracting for THIS fan...
    SMOOCHES

  10. Tug Says:
  11. Yeah, I get it. Especially indoors for basketball - you end up walking away with a headache.

    damn I'm old.

    ;-)

  12. Anndi Says:
  13. **looks for the net**

The music isn't as bad as the women who show off their assets in the hopes of appearing on the jumbotron, nice family entertainment that is... (**waits for Matt support of such madness**)

  14. Well, you know what? Suns fever is at an all time high around here; everyone is steamed about last season, and the fans want redemption. As much as I try to avoid talking about it, it's all over the place. I'm not sure how much I'm going to be able to avoid it, especially since our Mercury won the WNBA title this past summer.

    Sigh.

Oh, and thanks for the compliment. Not sure how much my opinion is worth, but if you say it's more than $0.02, then I'll accept that.

    More like a nickel, right?
