DON'T MISS OUT ON THE BIG CELEBRATION!!!
How To Get Your Peace Globe November 2007

COMPOSERS: WAR

One of our favorite 'fluff' movies is "Gone In Sixty Seconds", released in 2000 starring Nicolas Cage as Randall 'Memphis' Raines, Giovanni Ribisi as Kip Raines, Angelina Jolie as Sara 'Sway' Wayland and Robert Duvall as Otto Halliwell.

The story is about a group of car thieves who must steal 50 cars in one night to save the character of Kip from being taken out by some mobsters.

The cars they are going after are absolutely the coolest there are ever...(Right Trav?)..there are some continuity goofs and some of the cars are mis-identified throughout the movie, but again...this is a 'fluff film'. A couple of cool car chases fill it all in.

The cars? Well...here they are correctly identified, though they made have been mentioned differently in the film...the cars and the 'codenames' the crew gave to the cars to identify them...of course they are all female names. Cars, boats and ships are always women...treated with respect...

One of the cool parts in the movie is as the crew is getting ready to start their night and Nick Cage calls for silence and they start the music as they all 'get in the mood'...

The song is WAR'S "Lowrider" a song we have always thought was so freakin' cool and in sexy....Released in 1975 on the Why Can't We Be Friends album, it reached #1 on Billboard's R&B chart and #35 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart.

What is a Lowrider? A Lowrider is a car whose suspension has been modified to allow it to ride as low to the ground as possible. They normally use hydraulics to allow this to happen and for the most part, the cars are classics from the '50's.

The Lowriders are originally credited to the Mexican/American/Chicano culture, on the west coast around LA and San Diego, but the phenomena has spread across the country and you will find lines of Lowriders cruising through cities and towns on weekend nights and arriving at a local fast food parking lot or other common area.

The car most common and identified with Lowriding is the 1964 Chevy Impala, though any car or truck can be customized...There are even magazines dedicated to the art of customizing and the the Lowrider lifestyle...

"Mini-Tutelage"

The Original lineup sans Burdon

War was a multicultural American band of the 1970s from California, known for the hit songs "Low Rider", "Spill the Wine" and "Why Can't We Be Friends?".

Formed in 1969, War was the first and most successful musical crossover, fusing elements of rock, funk, jazz, Latin music, R&B, and even reggae. The band also transcended racial and cultural barriers with a multi-ethnic line-up.

The band's diverse musical influences have made it an enduring influence, one that has sold nearly 25 million records to date.

Although War's lyrics are often socio-political in nature, their music usually had a laid-back, California funk vibe. The music has been sampled and recorded by many singers and groups, ranging from Janet Jackson to Korn to TLC.

They were certainly part of our teenage years, our band PEACE OF MYND used to do "Spill The Wine" in rehearsals, though we can not ever remember pulling it out during one of our live performances...

"Spill The Wine" from the album Eric Burdon Declares War, was the band's first hit during the time they were known as ERIC BURDON AND WAR. Burdon who is most famous for being the front man for the band THE ANIMALS was brought into the studio with the band by producer Jerry Goldstein. Burdon left the group after one more album, also released in 1970, a two-disc set called Black-Mans Burdon. He left in the middle of a European tour. The song reached #3 on the Billboard charts.

"Why Can't We Be Friends" from the album of the same name, was played in space when NASA beamed it to the linking of Soviet Cosmonots and U.S astronauts in 1975. "Why Can't We Be Friends" charted at #6 in 1975

# B.B. Dickerson - Bass
# Lee Oskar - Harmonica, Vocals
# Lonnie Jordan - Keyboards, Vocals
# Papa Dee Allen - Percussion, Bongos, Vocals
# Harold Brown - Drums, Vocals
# Charles Miller - Saxophone, Flute, Clarinet, Vocals
# Howard E. Scott - Guitar,Vocals, Bandleader

All of the band played different percussion instruments constantly changing and sharing.

Rainy & Gray

Sparks Of Insanity By Vinny "Bond" Marini Friday, September 15, 2006 10 Of Your Sparks

Welcome To THE COUCH...Sit on Down and Get Comfy...

Welcome to Friday. Rainy, gray and bleak here in the Northeast. Was up until 1:30am last night redoing the header...now I am almost totally satisfied...but the two tweaks I want to make will have to wait as my pictures are all packed up.Time for some housecleaning here at THE COUCH. No, not that kind...I mean like setting the record straight on some things that we have discussed in the past.

OK, let's start with yesterday...I have been chastized by Vince, Sr., that I spoke of WWII and then Vietnam and Iraq and did not mention the war he fought in....Korea. It was not an intentional slight, it was just that I am not aware of the prisoner of war situation for that war...

YES, Dad...I know it was a war and not a "police action". Sorry about that.
Yesterday I pointed out two new additions to our COOL SITES TO VISIT listing (Dixie's Heart & Soul and MaryFly's B.S. and Recipes) on the right side of the page. Someone wrote saying I had never pointed out two of the other sites there, and though I am almost positive (I said almost), I will now make amends if that is not the case...:

Dana And Bethany's Site is chuck full of sweet stories, personal observations and just a whole bunch of laughs. And as a public service to them, if you happen to know Taylor Hicks, tell him Dana is STILL waiting for her phone call!

ACorner4Coco contains the musings of a mother, teacher and friend...she will regale you with stories of her students and her life.

The rest, I know I have told you about and if you have a few extra minutes each day...do yourself a favor and check them out.

Fred's World is not updated daily, but only when he feels like he has something to say (unlike some pieces of furniture I know).

Favorite Office Timewasters is a must read each and every day or you will miss out on some of the more unique sites out there on the web...like did you know you can write your own Puke Rock song? Yup ya can..but I am not telling you the site link, you have to go over to FOTW and find it yourself!

No Room...My Life Is Full will bring a smile to the face of anyone who has ever had kids and the trials and tribulations they bring.

Diana's Journal will bring smiles and tears as she describes her journey with her dad through a trying time.

Of course, for those always needed products, we lead you to Bento's Stuff and The Cat's Meow.

OK...so now I have mentioned them all...
If you read through comments recently, you will see that Dixie has thrown down the gauntlet regarding her St. Louis Cardinals and my beloved New York Yankees (magic number is now 6). Well Dixie, dear...I have just four numbers for you....16 and 9 and then 39 and 26.

The first set are the number of National League Pennants and World Series won by your Cardinals since 1900.

The second set are the number of American League Pennants and then World Series won by the team from 'Da Bronx...the Pinstriped Wonders...the team who have won more titles then any other team in any sport...The New York Yankees! in that same time frame.

Nuff said..... hehehehe

I have just confused the heck out of my Canadian friends, but suffice it to say that The Yankees are like your Montreal Canadiens, only with many many many more titles to their credit.

Or should I say:
J'ai juste confondu l'estacade à claire-voie hors de mes amis canadiens, mais qu'il suffise pour indiquer que Yankees sont comme votre Montréal Canadiens seulement avec beaucoup de beaucoup de beaucoup plus de titres à leur crédit.

Oh, and Coco, the magic number changes because when it gets down to zero, they have officially won the American League East title, no matter how many more games there are in the season...at that point, they can't be caught.

Tonight begins a weekend series against the Boston Red Sox...that is if the weather cooperates.
Final note for today...it appears with this template, when I put a link into my daily postings, you do not see the words underlined unless you put your mouse over them. So, if you see words in DARK BLUE, (see above first mentions of St. Louis Cardinals, NY Yankees, Montreal Canadiens and Boston Red Sox) be advised that those will link you to a site where you can find out more information on that subject.OK...looks like THE COUCH is now nice and clean...

Enjoy your weekend...stay safe...
Thanks for sitting on THE COUCH, hope you enjoyed your stay.

Video Camera + Laptop = War Videos

Sparks Of Insanity By Vinny "Bond" Marini Wednesday, August 02, 2006 4 Of Your Sparks

Wednesday....ah ... HUMP DAY...whatever that means...

So, we live in the digital age folks. I grew up watching film from Vietnam...grainy film showing soldiers fighting a war on the other side of the world. These soldiers also sent home photos taken with their Kodak Instamatics to wifes and mothers and fathers.
Even 12 years ago, we watched news footage of our soldiers fighting in the deserts of the middle east and they were, no doubt, sending home pictures to their families. Now, the soldiers are actually showing all of us the scenes from Iraq. The explosion of sites like youtube.com have made this possible. Yes, our fighting men and women are bringing their digital cameras and recorders with them and filming their lives over in the desert. They also have laptops and all of the necessary software to compose mini-films. These children of the MTV generation are now sharing their daily lives. Not sending grandma and grandpa videos of the grandkids playing in the ocean on vacation, but footage of bombs exploding..rifles being fired...and not sending them to the families...but to all of us through youtube and other sites. The Pentagon is not even limiting these videos. As long as they do not compromise operational security and the soldiers are not profiting, it is all good. You can go to youtube.com and search for Iraq videos.

One is called THE ENEMY and is set to Korn's "Y'all Want A Single."

At ifilm.com, look for LIVE FROM IRAQ - this one set to a rap song recorded by US troops while outside Baghdad.

Also at ifilm.com, is IRAQ (SO FAR AWAY), a journey from Camp Pendelton to Ramadi set to "So Far Away" by Staind.

Hey, just google "Iraq Music Videos" and your screen will be filled with links.
The war to you in a blink of an eye.

Google has also started something called "GOOGLE TRENDS" - this shows you where the most searches for anything come from. It is pretty cool.

Like, did you know the city that searches for "Taylor Hicks" the most is Leeds, AL, with Birmingham, AL, Atlanta, GA, Tampa, FL and Rochester, NY rounding out the top five?

You can also compare items, so if you did a Taylor Hicks, Katherine McPhee search, you will see that her searches are dwarfed by his, even in Irvine, CA - her homebase.

Albany, NY
leads in the search for the phrase "Pepsi" with Denver, Co second and
Buenos Aires, Argentina third.

A very cool device...check it out yourself... www.google.com/trends Thanks for taking a seat on the couch...hope it was restful and you learned something...

Lastly...following the lead of the great FRED, I will now be responding to your comments in the comment area.. so look for my witty comebacks!

No More War

Sparks Of Insanity By Vinny "Bond" Marini Wednesday, June 21, 2006 2 Of Your Sparks

Look, I know I said politics would be a small part of this blog...and I believe I have stuck to that pretty well, but the news of our two soldiers being kidnapped, tortured and killed has me boiling mad...

When is this madness going to end? Are we really thinking of staying in Iraq longer then we already have? Why? Can anyone tell me why we are still losing men and women over thee in a country where we are not even appreciated? Can our troops tell the friendlies from the enemy? How much longer before our President sees the futility in this war?
WMD...nope never found any.
Was this truly just a "Yo, Dad, I will go back there and do what you didn't have the balls to do" situation?

The similarities to the Vietnam War are eerie. Protests are beginning now over this ridiculous war. The administration is walking around with their heads up their collective asses while the country begs them to bring the troops home...The one main difference, and this is one that does warm my heart, is that our troops are being treated as heroes when they return home. What our Vietnam era veterans went through upon their return is a disgraceful blotch in our history and should never be repeated again.

Below are some quotes. Some are from Richard M. Nixon, the others from George W. Bush. Can you pick who said which? - Answers below--NO peeking

  1. "When we make a pledge, we mean it. We keep our word, and what we begin, we will finish."
  2. "We are all in it together. This is a war. We take a few shots and it will be over. We will give them a few shots and it will be over."
  3. ". . . For once, we've got to use the maximum power of this country . . . against this *shit-ass* little country: to win the war. We can't use the word, "win." But others can."
  4. “It is necessary for me to establish a winner image. Therefore, I have to beat somebody.”
  5. "I strongly believe what we're doing is the right thing. If I didn't believe it — I'm going to repeat what I said before — I'd pull the troops out, nor if I believed we could win, I would pull the troops out."
  6. "I wish I wasn't the war president. Who in the heck wants to be a war president? I don't."
  7. "By taking this action, I hope that I will have hastened the start of the healing."
  8. "My view is that one should not break up a winning combination."
  9. "We must take the battle to the enemy, disrupt his plans and confront the
    worst threats before they emerge."
  10. "This will not be a campaign of half measures, and we will accept no outcome
    except victory."
  11. “It is necessary for me to establish a winner image. Therefore, I have to beat somebody.”
  12. "You're so goddamned concerned about the civilians, and I don't give a damn. I don't care."
  13. "The ultimate aim is for the infrastructure to be the best in the region. And the political process is moving toward democracy, which is a major shift of system in that part of the world."
  14. "As far as I am concerned now, I have no enemies in the press whatsoever."
Not as easy as you thought it would be - was it? OK, give yourself 1 point for every correct answer and post your score in the comments area.

I am still calling on all of you to help stop Malaria in Africa: - SEND YOUR $10.00
As a sports nut, nets means so many things.. in this case, it means LIFE.
If enough people do this, we can wipe malaria off the map. What does $10 do? It buys special netting to be used over the beds of children. Nets coated with insecticide costs between $4 and $6, so with shipping, you get to $10.
I know, you are saying..sure I send in $10 and $9 goes to administration costs and $1 to a net. WRONG!
Seems Ted Turner donated $1 BILLION to create the U.N. Foundation, which covers all overhead. Andrea Gay, the U.N. Foundations Director of Children's Health says "every cent goes to buy nets."

To use some of Reilly's column: "If you are a coach. parent. player, gym teacher or even just a fan who likes watching balls fly into nets, send $20. You saved a life, take the rest of the day off.
You ever have a net in your driveway, front lawn or on your head at McDonald's, send $20. You ever imagined Angelina Jolie in fishnets, send $20."

The address is: UNFoundation.org/malaria. Then just look for the big SI's Nothing But Net logo (or call 202-887-9040) and donate $20.
