Hey y'all
Hope y'all had a great Thanksgiving and that you got to spend time with family and friends.
We had a wonderful meal with Nancy's family and then I spent the rest of the weekend lying flat on my back.
Just as we were leaving to go to dinner, I twisted my lower back. Did not feel like anything serious at first, but slowly it tightened up.
Iced it the first 48 and then used heat the rest of the weekend along with my TENS unit got me to the point where I could get to work today and visit my Chiropractor.
Still real sore and I know it will mean I will probably stand up for most of Music On The Couch this evening.
The weather is not helping as it has been chilly and rainy for the past 5 days...sun is supposed to shine tomorrow...but still chilly.
Hope you are all well and I will write more tomorrow.

Man, can not believe I am saying this, but...Welcome to December!
Did you have a great Thanksgiving? I sure did. It was a fantastic four days that was only marred by Matt having to leave on Sunday.
When he arrived on Wednesday evening, we went to downtown Memphis and hit Beale Street, deciding on B.B. Kings for dinner. While eating a nice meal and having a few drinks, we got to hear a decent local band. They were not great, but the guitar player had some talent.
Thursday morning came early - 4:30 am to be exact - as I had to put "Fred" (our turkey) into the oven. He had already had sage butter inserted below the skin and in the cavity along with a cornbread-caramelized onion stuffing. He also was basted with a diluted honey sauce during his roasting.
I had let Matt sleep upstairs so as not to disturb him, so i fell back onto the couch and set the timer for 1 hour to baste again. Finally, at around 7:00am, I was up and began assembling the Manicotti (I had made the crepes on Wednesday).
Matt and I headed over to Nancy's at about 11.
Truth be told, the initial meeting of Nancy and the boys was a little cool (uncomfortable - take your choice) but pretty quickly things began to smooth out.
When Nancy's family showed up it got easier actually...and Matt was conversing with a niece and her husband who are a few years older and I think the boys began to see Matt as just a regular guy and it made it easier.
Dinner was great...everyone was stuffed and most took home some leftovers.
Matt, Peter and Ernie then went out for some front yard football with some other kids from the neighborhood.
Friday, Matt and I headed down to Tunica and hit Harrahs for a little father/son blackjack fun. We spent about 4 hours there and both walked away winners.
Then back to the apartment where we watched Dark Knight. I had never seen it, and it really was pretty good. Maybe a tad long, but not that bad.
Our planned day with Nancy and the Boys on Friday fell apart as their dad had planned a hunting trip for them at the last minute, so Matt and I hung out and talked and chilled until we picked Nancy up for dinner.
We again headed downtown and checked out the new (open 6 months) Morgan Freeman Restaurant/Club Ground Zero.
Food was fantastic - and filling - and the band Blues Highway were fantastic! The lead singer/harp player had it going on and the guitarist could make it smoke. The drummer was very basic and that hurt them some.
Sunday was a lazy day until I had to bring Matt to the airport. The moment I left him, my heart hurt and the tears flowed...he is a man and a pretty fine one at that. Watching him interact with strangers in a tough situation (meeting his dad's girlfriend for the first time...seeing me with someone other than his mom for the first time), he made me so proud.
We did get a few pictures on Thursday - there is one of Matt and I that I am not sharing now, as it is going to become our Christmas Card.

YES! That is an apron...sheesh
Why do I try and put my arm around his shoulder, I am too small!
Peter was not wanting his picture taken...
Can you tell?
hehe

If you have not figured it out yet, I did not have time to do reviews on new artists, so we will by-pass that this week and be back next Monday with more new music.
Last week, the one one of the three artists featured was given kudos, and after reading the comments about Citizens Of Contrary Knowledge (how the he** did I miss that acronym???) I have decided that our friend Dana from Dana's Random Blatherings is going to receive the CD.
Dana...I just need your snail mail address.
Hey folks, I have music to give away...let your friends know to stop by on Monday's and check out our new feature...everyone likes to hear new music...don't they?

This is one you’re not going to want to miss.
First, Dr. Blogstein and Dangerous Lee welcome in an ex-nun, turned nurse, turned lesbian comedienne.
Kelli Dunham, who grew up on a beet farm in Wisconsin, has definitely taken a unique route to a comedy career. We’ll risk it all and delve deep into her mind to figure out how she went from the convent to comedy club and find out all that happened in between.

This will be my last post until Monday as I have a ton of cooking to do for Thanksgiving and then Matt is in town and we have a full weekend planned.
Let me share with you, my thanks...
I am thankful I am a father to Matt. He is a most incredible young man and I could not be prouder.
I am thankful for my parents. Thank you Mom Joan and Dad Vince for everything you have ever taught and given to me with you love.
I am thankful for my sister Lynn and her wonderful family, BIL Kevin, niece Candice and nephew Joe.
I am thankful for my brother Richard and his great family, SIL Cindy and nieces Amelia and Adele.
I am thankful for the woman who woke what had been dormant for so long. A true love of life and the knowledge that you can love and be loved without issues and baggage. My dear Nancy, I am excited by the next four days and then all the days we will spend after...you, Ernie and Peter are a part of my life and it thrills me. Love you.
I am thankful for you, my wonderful guests here on The Couch, for your loyalty and wit and honestly and for being you.
I am thankful that I have found a new life here in Memphis and in the last year grabbed back my health and fitness.
I am thankful I live in the best country in the world and pray for the servicemen and women around the world who will not be with their families this holiday season. I pray they can be next year.

Speaking of niece Adele, as we have shared in the past, she dances ballet and this past weekend, she appeared in a performance of Cinderella. I share with you the review of the show...

It's no wonder that so many classical ballets are based on fairy tales. When you stop to think about it, the fairy world and the ballet world are made for each other. There is a quality of unreality in both that fascinates and enthralls.
What prompted these musings is San Antonio Metropolitan Ballet's production of "Cinderella" presented Saturday and repeated Sunday at the Lila Cockrell Theater. Not because it was a perfect production but maybe exactly because it wasn't. Even with all its youthful imperfections, the performance still managed to charm.
Choreographed by former Houston Ballet principal and current ballet master Phillip Broomhead, with "additional choreography" by S.A. Met Artistic Director Susan Connally, this was a very classical "Cinderella" in both execution and concept. No contemporary re-interpretation, no Cinderella-as-a-feminist heroine, or anything like that. Though this sort of tinkering with the classics is in vogue with professional companies, S.A. Met is clearly happy to stick with the familiar, with one exception.
For some reason, the company removed the mean stepmother from the story without apparently noticing that that makes the premise of Cinderella's condition pretty untenable. How did the nasty stepsisters get to live with Cinderella and her dad if he did not marry their mother? And with the intimidating wife out of the picture, why would her loving father allow the two stepsisters to treat his daughter like an abused servant?
Logic aside, the stepsisters portrayed by Katie Fikes and Sarah Villareal were appropriately funny and "clumsy" without being turned into total caricatures as is often the case. Their sort-of-mistreatment of Cinderella gave the opening scenes some oomph until the Fairy Godmother (the confident Suzanne Wolff) arrived to perform her magic.
As in the past, the leads, Cinderella and her Prince, were danced by pros, in this case the husband-and-wife team of Tiit Helimets and Molly Smolen, both principals with the San Francisco Ballet. Strong dancers both, they effortlessly regaled the audience with beautifully executed multiple turns (especially she), flawless lifts and crisp, pure lines.
Smolen often punctuated her performance with hopping on pointe, vibrating in place, also on pointe, and, in one instance, descending a staircase on pointe -- not an easy task by any means. Helimets projected the image of a romantic hero, especially when his hair kept flying up while he twirled and leapt around the stage, oddly enhancing the Prince's heartfelt sincerity.
The Cinderella story has many versions around the world, and Prokofiev, who composed the score back in 1944, included elements of the Russian version in his concept, namely the four seasons fairies, danced Saturday night by Libby W (Spring), Alexandra S (Summer) Isabella H (Autumn) and Adele M (Winter). Despite their youth, all four acquitted themselves honorably, especially Marini who glided through her part with cool aplomb.
Special mention also goes to company member Thaddeus M who portrayed both the dance teacher in Act I and more importantly the court jester in the rest of the show. Not only did he tumble hilariously when necessary but he showed exceptional power for someone so young.
Enriching the visuals and the complexity of presentation were also groups of stars, mice, bunnies, butterflies, pages, party guests and a few others, all woven into the choreography fairly adroitly. Clad in silvery tutus, the stars presented the most coherent ensemble work; especially when appearing with the fairies; and the mice were, well, really cute.
Both lighting and set design could be improved but perhaps that's too much to ask of a company with limited means. In the end, as the sweeping music rose and Cinderella and the Prince danced their last happy steps, one could not help but smile.

Some music news that came in after yesterday's post:
Bruce Springsteen's single "Working on a Dream" became available in the iTunes Store and on BruceSpringsteen.net yesterday. Free downloads became available through both sites. The track will be a paid download in the iTunes Store from tomorrow exclusively through December 9.
Springsteen's new album 'Working on a Dream' has been set for January 27 release on Columbia Records. 'Working on a Dream' was recorded with the E Street Band and features twelve new Springsteen compositions plus two bonus tracks. It is the fourth collaboration between Springsteen and Brendan O'Brien, who produced and mixed the album.

<-----------------------------------------------

This will be our last post of the week. We want to wish each and every one of you here in the U.S. a safe, loving Thanksgiving.
To our guest who do not live in the U.S., enjoy the rest of your week and weekend and
also, be safe...

This year, we at The Couch have so much to be thankful about. Let's face it, you our loyal, loving guests know the entire year was not a joyfest...we went through a rough time back in the summer and forced you to endure our sorrowful rants...BUT, for the most part, 2007 has been a pretty special year...
That said...WE GIVE THANKS...
WE GIVE THANKS...that Mom Joan and Dad Vince are alive and relatively healthy. Dad had a few situations this year, but came through them with flying colors...LOVE YOU BOTH
WE GIVE THANKS...that we have such an incredible son. Matt, you are turning into a sensitive, intellegent, caring young man. You have so much to look forward to and we can not wait to witness your journey. This is the first time ever we will not spend the holidays together and that is the hardest thing for me, but you live in my heart every day...LOVE YOU DUDE
WE GIVE THANKS...for our sister Lynn and husband Kevin and niece Candice and nephew Joe. We miss you all and even though we are now further apart, we feel your love every day.
WE GIVE THANKS...for our brother Rich and wife Cindy and nieces Amelia and Adele...looking forward to joining all y'all for Christmas.
WE GIVE THANKS...for our aunts PattyAnn and Adele...again, we do not see you enough, but you both have always been so encouraging of all we have done and your love has always been overwhelming.
WE GIVE THANKS...for our cousins Joyce and Denise and husbands Rachid and Steve...This year will find you all so much closer to each other and that is a wonderful thing. You both have been there for me this year and we feel so much closer to you...
WE GIVE THANKS...that we are working full-time and have settled in here in Memphis...we work with some great people and our 'bosses' J.P. and Brian have made the transition so much easier...
WE GIVE THANKS...for our two BFF who share the same name...you two have been rocks this year and without you, we would never have made it through the rough spots...You are both going through your own ordeals now and know we are here for you both...anytime, anywhere, for anything.
WE GIVE THANKS...for our other friends who we know in real life or here in the bloggosphere... We do not say this lightly...You people are incredible. You are so diverse in your likes and dislikes, yet, in my life you all seem to gel.
The fraternity boys, whether playing fantasy football or just generally causing havoc in each other's lives with snarky remarks, one of the best things we ever did was pledge TKE...
The wonderful guests here on The Couch...you all encourage, and show your appreciation every day with your visits and comments...you also showed your love with your votes this year which allowed The Couch to be named Bestest Blog of The Year...it STILL blows us away...
WE GIVE THANKS...to the special friends from TOOSP and especially our HOOCHIES and HOTTIES...the daily emails and constant showing of love is just so wonderful...
WE GIVE THANKS...for the women and men all around the world who have made the commitment to keep our country safe and try and make it safer in other parts of the world. We hope and pray every day that those of you in dangerous areas will be allowed to come home very very soon.
WE GIVE THANKS...for the three new friends who have come into our life recently. We look forward to spending Thanksgiving with you and your family...We will speak of this soon, but now is not the time. Suffice it to say that there is a smile on our face that has been missing for a long time...
WE GIVE THANKS...that we are healthy and are beginning a new adventure at this time in our life....
WE GIVE THANKS...WE GIVE THANKS...WE GIVE THANKS...WE GIVE THANKS...WE GIVE THANKS...WE GIVE THANKS...

This is one of the songs we opened our radio show with our second year on the air in Rochester... both on the college station WITR and the local rock station WCMF..."Jessica"
It feels appropriate today since it is such a joyous upbeat number...written by Dickey Betts, from their 1973 Brothers and Sisters album, the first full studio release after Duane's death. Bassist Berry Oakley recorded "Wasted Words" and "Rambling Man" before dying in his motorcycle accident.

"I THANK YOU"
Thanksgiving Edition of
THE COUCH'S
Thursday Thirteen
THE COUCH'S
Thursday Thirteen
in the spirit of Thanksgiving
and be the things
THE COUCH
is thankful for...
and be the things
THE COUCH
is thankful for...
1. My son Matt - he has grown into an incredible young man. He has compassion, humor, love, intelligence, athletisism beyond belief.
2. Allyson - without whom Matt would not be here today, and much of what he is today is due to her.
3. Mom and Dad - They did an incredible job raising the three kids and showed us unlimited love, and though we might not have always learned, tried to show us the right way to be in this world of ours.
4. My brother Richard - We were not so close as kids (maybe ebcause we had to share a room!), but we have connected in our later years. He is intelligent, funny and full of love.
5. My sister Lynn - THE COUCH was not the best of brothers when we were young, but Lynn has shown strength of character as she has matured and people can look at her and learn how to act.
6. My SIL's Cindy, Linda & Sue and BIL's Kevin, Bill & George - Cindy & Kevin have made my brother and sister happy and Bill and wife Sue & George and wife Linda welcomed me into their family when I met Allyson
7. My neices Jennifer, Kimberly, Amelia, Candice, Adele, Emily, and nephews Chris, Joseph, Billy, Christian & Joseph - their parents have done a great job raising them and I wish them all spectacular lives.
8. My relatives - every single one of them including my two two aunts PattyAnn & Adele and cousins Denise and Joyce. Cousin Sal I believe you were the one with your hand on Matt's shoulder when he had his accident - thank you.
9. Tau Kappa Epsilon - The fraternity I joined at RIT. This is where I made my friends for life. These guys would stop what they were doing and come if I called and I would do the same for them. I wish I could list them all... but Andy, Dean, George, John, Shebs, Rookie, Murdoch, Pete, Jay, Tim, Ed, Tom, Greg, Bob...these are the major players...
and we all miss you Wade...very much.
10. The friends I have made throughout my life - In HS - Debbie, Rich and Bob, and after school, Joy, Peter, Tony, Joe, Jeff, Steve, Andy, Maria , Gil and so many more...you have all affected my life in some way.
11 The friends from the Soul Patrol - 10 months ago, I did not know any of you existed. Then we found each other slowly through a TV program that some of us had never watched before...all because of a gray haired soul singer. If I start to name names I am going to forget someone and then I will catch all sorts of heck...many of you are listed along the sidebar for your blogs... some don't have blogs, but we laugh and play on the FBB web site...
YOU know who you are...that is all that matters!
12. My health - for a 52 year old I am not doing too badly...OK, my bloodpressure could be lower, as could my cholesterol..and I could do without the acid reflux, but all of those are regulated. We will not talk about the 15 pounds that could be shed...
13. THE COUCH - and all it has brought me. It has given me a chance to express myself as I have never been able to before. It has introduced me to other bloggers from all walks of life who tell me about their loves and fears, their wants and desires...It all began as a joke over on the AI boards, but when I decided to start over here, there was never a doubt that it would be
SO much to be thankful for this day... THE COUCH wishes each of you safety and joyous times...

It has introduced me to other bloggers from all walks of life who tell me about their loves and fears, their wants and desires...It all began as a joke over on the AI boards, but when I decided to start over here, there was never a doubt that it would be
THE COUCH
SO much to be thankful for this day... THE COUCH wishes each of you safety and joyous times...

"FLYING HOME"
Yes, THE COUCH knows we have been posting late at night the day before, but last evening just got away...
Saw Mr. Hicks on the AMA's and have to tell you..hated the haircut...but it isn't my head so...
Heading out of Memphis today to go home for the holidays...will be spending it with family.... also have to go over to Little League and drain the deep fryer as the concession is officially closed for the season...Will be the last time THE COUCH has to do that fugly chore!
Be coming back on Sunday...
Man, hate flying during the holidays almost as much as root canals!
Years ago, we flew alot for business...about 125,000 miles a year. Now it was not fun, though we had some nice trips over the years. It also allowed for a huge accumulation of frequent flyer miles and hotel points.
Son Matt did not fly coach for the first 5-6 years of his life.
BUT, flying during the holidays...YUK

One story that sticks in my mind...
THE COUCH was in Kansas City, just before Easter.
Airport is a total zoo of people.
Kids crying and moaning...parents yelling at the kids...and business folk complaining about the crying kids and yelling parents.
There was a delay at one point, which just added to the fun and excitement and on top of that, it was clear this flight was going to be overbooked - Don't you just LOVE when the airlines do that!
Now, for some reason, there had not been a chance to get into First Class. Normally, when my flights were booked, the main airline we flew automatically bumped us. So it was the cattle car....which we normally dreaded anyway.
So, they make an announcement that boarding will begin and they will be calling by "rows beginning at the back."
At that every person in the waiting area gets on line. Hummmmmm all of these people in the back of the plane?
So now the Airline Lady makes the announcement AGAIN!
A few people move but not many. So, Airline Lady announces that if you get to the jetway and your row has not been called she will not allow you to board.
Few more people get out of the line and we see Airline Lady shaking her head in disgust.
So she begins to call and it looks like things are going smoothly.
My rows are called and we get in line.
About three people in front is a woman with two children, both pulling on mommy.
Mom gets to the jetway and we can hear the conversation...and this is where it gets interesting folks:
THE COUCH NOTE: This is 1998 or so...we have not been hit with all of the intense security procedures we have now.. BUT STILL!!!!!!
Airline: May I have your boarding passes?
Mom: Oh, my husband has them.
Airline: And where is your husband?
(Mom turns around looking - THE COUCH following her eyes as is Airline Lady)...
Mom: Oh, there he is and she points.
(Dad is about 8 people behind THE COUCH with two other kids in tow and 4 bags)
Airline: I am going to have to ask you to step aside until your husband gets to the front of the line so we can continue boarding.
THE COUCH NOTE: As per the custom, they HAD announced preboarding for First class, and families traveling with small children prior to general boarding
Mom: No No (she turns and says loudly) HONEY! come on up here you have the boarding passes.
Airline: Please just stand to the side and we can get you on when his turn in line gets here
Mom: No it is no problem - HONEY COME ON!
THE COUCH turns to see dad, now trying to get the two kids and 4 bags past the line of people...and not very kindlt either and one of the kids has begun to bawl as dad drags him along
Airline: Please jst step to the side.
Grumbles begin from the people standing in line waiting
Mom: Here he comes now...it isn't a problem
Airline: YES, it is.
At that point the Airline Lady indicates to the gentleman behind mom to move around her and takes his boarding pass and he - shaking his head - moves down the jetway.
Mom: Why are you letting them on first, we were here.
Airline: Miss, you do not have your boarding pass and we have to get the plane loaded and out of here before we lose our clearence and get further delayed.
Mom: Well THAT is not fair.
Airline Lady continues to let people around her as dad continues to struggle.
As THE COUCH gets to the front of the line, dad is also arriving and almost knocks me down.
I glared at him, decided better of it, handed Airline Lady my boarding pass, looked at her and said, "I am so sorry you have to deal with this, but you certainly handled it properly, people who never fly should familiarize themselves with the rule before they do."
Of course we said it loud enough for indignant (by now) mom to hear.
Airline lady smiled and said, "Sir, you have a tremendous holiday."
Arggggggggg...now I can only imagine what tonight will be like...
:::Wayne and Garth dream sequence waving of hands::: do do do do do do do do do do do do
"What do you mean I have to take off my shoes? On these floors?"
"Well, I have to have shampoo when i go away, why can't I take my 100 oz bottle with me."
"I am not taking my sleeping baby out of the carriage to go through the metal detector."
"I can't check these three bags, they contain presents for my grandkids."
"Do you mind changing seats with me, my wfe is in the back row, the middle seat." (asked of me in row 10 aisle seat). This is always follwed by a totally indignant look, elbow fights for the entire flight and at least 4 trips to "the bathroom", so I have to get up to let him out.
Ah yes....flying the friendly skies...
As THE COUCH sits in the airport today, we will compose our THURSDAY THIRTEEN and post when we arrive home. Not sure we will be scanning everyone's tomorrow, but will try and make the complete journey through allyour sites thoughout the weekend....not sure we will get a Friday post up but just maybe!
For my friends in the US...HAVE A SAFE AND HAPPY THANKSGIVING...
For those of you outside the US...Wishing you a great Thursday, and a superb weekend...

Thanks for sitting on THE COUCH, hope you enjoyed your stay.
