Bird & Insect Tuesday

Sparks Of Insanity By Vinny "Bond" Marini Tuesday, September 14, 2010 9 Of Your Sparks

So, we have this hummingbird feeder right out side the window near our kitchen table. Lately our hummingbirds are very active. And we have one dominant male who has decided this is his personal feeder.

When other hummingbirds come close he will come flying out of the trees and chase them away. Then the other day he must have been tired, because he took up a perch right on top of the feeder.

He must have also been feeling purty, because he posed for over 10 minutes...

The results - (all should enlarge with a simple clickity click)

Then yesterday, this little fellow heard about the camera guy and came and visited for a while...

A new week...

Sparks Of Insanity By Vinny "Bond" Marini Monday, September 08, 2008 22 Of Your Sparks

Hey y'all..hope you had a great weekend...mine certainly was.

Mom and dad arrived mid-afternoon on Thursday and we had a wonderful visit that evening along with pasta and wine. This pot of gravy really turned out well...and the meatballs were outstanding.

Friday morning after I got back from the gym, we hopped in the car and after a stop at COSCO for two beautiful london broils, we headed for Nancy's. Introductions were made and After I got the london broil's into a marinade and some small talk exchanged we got back in the car and headed for the The Strawberry Plains Audubon Center, a wonderful facility where, in addition to other things, they band hummingbirds that come their way while making their migration to Central America and Mexico.

We watched as they measured, recorded and banded the birds and listened to the volunteers discuss the birds and their migration patterns. It really was interesting and I got a few pictures which I will be sharing over the next few days.

COUCH NOTE: On Saturday I left my camera and Nancy's at her house and we did not get together Sunday, so I am going tonight to pick them up.

We skipped the snake and bat exhibits. We were going to take a ride through the facility on the wagons they have but the skies were dark and foreboding and we were all getting hungry, so we got back in the car and Nancy called Uncle Lou's and pre-ordered a whole chicken for us.

Unfortunately, pictures of that visit are not available. I had forgotten a second roll of film and Nancy's digital camera had run out of juice (YES, I know we have to plan better next time!).

When we arrived we were greeted and ordered up our sides - fried okra, french fries, onion rings and corn niblets (similar to corn fritters, but little nugget bites). As I was paying the lady said "Oh yeah, I recognize the pretty lady you are with from when you were here last time." My response "What, you don't remember me too?!?!" LOL

Our food came and we dug in. There was silence for while due to our enjoying the meal. We checked their map on the wall and saw there was already a push-pin showing visitors from Boynton Beach (where Mom and Dad live) had visited, so it was not necessary to add another.

When we were done, we all knew we would not be eating any dinner later that evening...we were totally satisfied and there was nary a bite left of the food.

We then headed back to my apartment where Nancy got to view the video my sister, brother and I put together for Mom and Dad's 50th Anniversary four years ago and also the video from my brother and SIL's 25th Anniversary. She really enjoyed it - seeing all the family members and hearing stories of them all.

Nancy's youngest son is the manager for the varsity football team (and back-up quarterback for the freshman team) and her oldest plays French Horn in the band. There was a game that night and we talked about going, but Mom and Dad opted out. I drove Nancy back to her place and she sent me back to be with mom and dad.

On Saturday afternoon Mom, Dad and I drove down to Nancy's where Mom and Dad got to meet both of the boys.

We sat outside and had some cocktails as it was a glorious day. Ole Miss was on the TV and dad began to root for them along with Nancy's boys and was truly disappointed when they lost on a last second field goal. The younger son Peter was funny when dad asked why he did not seem so disappointed and he responded "I am used to it after the last three years."

I cranked up the grill and put the steaks on along with roasting bags loaded with sliced potatoes with fresh rosemary out of Nancy's garden.

When all was ready we sat down to a great meal that also included corn on the cob, baby portobello mushrooms with garlic and a coating of bread crumbs (one of Mom's specialties) and roasted garlic artisan bread. The talk never lingered and mom and dad truly enjoyed the company of both boys.

Dessert was banana pudding and strawberry shortcakes that we had bought at Lou's the day before. When we were done we did a cleanup and then Mom, Dad and I headed out arriving home sometime around 8:00pm, just as I received a test message from the wonderful Turnbaby" asking if I was home. I dialed her number and she and Brad were just leaving the Kentucky game and were looking for an update on the Florida State game! LOL..

Then it was time for some sleep. Yesterday morning at about 6:45am, Mom and Dad pulled away from Casa Marini - Memphis for the last two days on the road, heading home. We had watched the track of Ike all weekend and had made plans for them to stay if he had headed up the coast of Florida.

Once they left I fell back to sleep for a while and then began doing the sheets and towels and other laundry that had accumulated over the weekend. With ym mini washer and dryer it took most of the day!

I also spent yesterday watching some football and tracking my three fantasy teams. All three are still up for grabs as I write this, but two of my three teams in my Survivor Pool made it through which is great - Denver is the third team for this week, so hoping they also make it through.

It was an incredibly wonderful visit with Mom and Dad, but way too short. In the end, they now know why Nancy has won my heart and is such an important part of my life and it was wonderful to watch them hug and kiss as we left Nancy's on Saturday.

Thanks again for your votes in the music poll on Friday.

I received this lovely away from Kimmie over at Pretty Amazing Grace. She is a lovely woman from Buffalo who must be very happy after her Bills won yesterday. THANK YOU KIMMIE!

Closed my eyes and picked this one out for today...New Riders Of the Purple Sage at the Fillmore East April 26, 1971 with a wonderful song originally done by The Band

Stats and Feelin' Alright...

Sparks Of Insanity By Vinny "Bond" Marini Thursday, September 04, 2008 26 Of Your Sparks

Weird how my comments have gone up and down the last few weeks. Some days I get plenty...others, not so much...

Is it the summer and vacation time? Not sure exactly what is going on, but I see plenty of comments all around the bloggosphere, so maybe it is just that my posts are not so interesting...

I did a nothing post on Tuesday yet my stat counter says there were over 238 individual visits for the day. I seem to get quite a few 'unique visits' each day but don't seem to generate interest in people commenting...
Now, I am not as into the stats thing as I was way back in the beginning when I would check them every day. today was actually the first time in months that I actually went in and looked at what was happening...

Here is what is listed in my keyword analysis as of today (Wednesday):

1 - 8.33% - trix cereal commercial roller coaster
1 - 8.33% - janis joplin back home 66
1 - 8.33% - ac/dc photo 2008
1 - 8.33% - bootleg the doors lost paris tapes
1 - 8.33% - julie taylor dj slough radio
1 - 8.33% - leather blog
1 - 8.33% - information on how janis joplin's song mercedes benz was created, performed, and heard
1 - 8.33% - competition wins for janice waterfall
1 - 8.33% - round leather couch
1 - 8.33% - the ponsonby dcs
1 - 8.33% - doors boot yer butt
1 - 8.33% - new life leather & luggage repair, asbury park, nj 07712

OK, the music I can see, but I am comfuzzled over the visit from the search for 'trix cereal' and 'janice waterfall'...no clue how that brought them to me...I guess I am boring...no searches for sex toys or unusual life-styles bring people here!

People don't seem to spend a long time sitting on The Couch (do I need to fix the cushions...are they too uncomfortable?)

Visit Length

74 - Less than 5 secs
5 - From 5 secs to 30 secs
6 - From 30 secs to 5 mins
0 - From 5 mins to 20 mins
0 - From 20 mins to an hour
1 - Longer than an hour

I use StatCounter for The Couch and right now the total number of visitors it has tracked is 55,655...I can't remember when I put it on The Couch, but I think that is pretty good for a blog that is less than 3 years old...

Now, I have been doing this Entrecard thing recently and I suppose many of those who come around to 'drop their cards' don't really stay...they are hit and run visitors...building up their banks so their blogs are more expensive to 'advertise on'...

Seriously, there are some blogs out there that are over 2,000 credits to put your card on their site, yet when you visit these blogs, they seem to get even fewer comments than I do here on The Couch...

The only other thing I have is the ClusterMap widget, but again I hardly look at it. Interestingly, it has a different number than StatCounter, but S.C. is set to just record 'unique visits'. If you come by more than once a day it does not count you (or it is not supposed to count you) and I have it set that anytime I come on from home I am not counted. Here is what I found today:

Running total of visits to the above URL since 30 Oct 2006: 78,641

You are one of those little red dots...

In the end as a dear friend has said to me a number of times "Are you doing this for 'them' or for yourself?"

Well, of course I am doing this for myself or I would have stopped long ago...but I do wonder how long I would do this if I were getting 10-20 visits and no comments each day.

Why do you blog? Is it for the 'fame' (not putting fortune there)...is it for the sanity it brings you (or insanity as the case may be)...Do you comment every time you visit a blog? What kind of 'special things/widgets' do you do with your blog to gather stats? How closely do you follow your stats? Do you drill down to see where your visitors are coming from?

Mom Joan and Dad Vince arrive today so if I do not get to visit today or tomorrow I will make up for it next week. Tonight is pasta night at Casa Bond - Memphis.

Funny, they did not have internet access for a number of days while on Cape Cod so when I spoke with Dad the other day he said "I spent some time catching up on The Couch and I want to put in a request that we find time to visit Uncle Lou's!" Got his mouth watering...so Nancy and i will be bringing them there sometime Friday.

Also considering going to Holly Springs on Friday (weather permitting - Gustav is drenching us today) for the 2008 Hummingbird Migration Celebration. Holly Springs is a stopping point for these tiny birds as they make their way from Canada to Mexico and Central America for the winter...If we do so, I will be bringing my camera and will (hopefully) be able to share with y'all next week...and YES Fred, I will make sure we get a photo of all of us and I will be saying HI from you to them.

Tomorrow I will be featuring two new musical artists and allow you to rate them. Again, the PR firm has been real interested in your comments and opinions, so please vote in the poll and leave a comment.

Today we leave you with some musical morsels...Joe Cocker with Mad Dogs & Englishmen, one of my all-time favorites and, I believe, the best version of this great Dave Mason song.

The song was originally released while Mason was a member of the
most-excellent band, Traffic. Here is their version:

The song done by it's originator...also a great version

And how the song should not be performed:
