Welcome Back My Friends...

Sparks Of Insanity By Vinny "Bond" Marini Monday, March 16, 2009

to the show that never ends...

But we change...at 8:46pm on Sunday, March 15, 2009 this time, to the third incarnation of The Couch in terms of templates. This is, obviously, still a three-column template as I like the organization of it and I prefer the split sidebars over two to the left or right, because I believe they are better organized.

NOW HOLD ON A SECOND....LET'S EVALUATE THIS WHOLE THING...

What are you doing here?

WHAT...YOU THINK I WAS LEAVING?

NOW NOW...

BE QUIET YOU!

SO, WHERE WAS I? OH YEAH...THREE COLUMNS..YUP, JUST LIKE BEFORE....YOU GOT RID OF THAT BLUE THAT HURT PEOPLE'S EYES....SO THAT IS GOOD....YOU WENT ALL BLACK...WELL Y'ALL KNOW I LIKE THE DARKER SIDE OF THINGS...

BUT OTHER THAN ADDING A GLOWING RED BAR, WHICH YOU FOUND ON SOME ANIME BLOG TEMPLATE, WHAT EXACTLY HAVE YOU DONE HERE?

Well, you will see scroll windows for most things now, which cuts down on the scrolling. The one exception to this is the "subject/labels" area. I have not figured out how to produce that as html code so that I can add a scroll window, and if I can't, whether I am going to keep it....I use a LOT of labels!

There are things still missing...and I am still working out how to deal with them...things like badges and causes I support. In my earlier incarnation of this switch, I had two turntables on my sidebar that showed them images. I am not sure if I am going to do that, or...if I can shrink tor I remove the labels area, I will place them at the bottom.

In my old template I was also able to insert a Couch between posts. I have not found where to insert a post-divider yet and do not like how the posts run into themselves.

Also, the three columns are fixed width, so there should not be any more times when copy runs into the sidebars.

We are working on a new button for your blogs. Once it is complete, I will let y'all know..

The font is now san serif and larger, which I think will make it easier to read.

So, what do you think kiddies?

SO, REALLY THIS IS NOT A TEMPLATE CHANGE, IT IS MORE A FORMAT CHANGE...CORRECT?

Well, I guess you could say that...

WELL THEN MISTER KNOW-IT-ALL, WHY ARE YOU TRYING TO PASS IT OFF AS A TEMPLATE CHANGE?

OK, semantics....toMAto, toMAHto...whatever...

Now, as far as past posts, some of that might be harder to read. I did download the entire Couch history on Sunday, so I have it in it's native template. I wish I had done that before I made the change to the last template some two years and three months ago.

OH....and...LOL, you were redirected when you hit your bookmark or links!

Welcome to http://www.bigleathercouch.com!!!!!

Thanks for the final push TURNBABY of "And As The World Turns". No more .blogspot for The Couch.

I did try for just thecouch.com, but it was taken. I also could not get bblc.com as that was taken. I did have the option for bondsblc.com, but wasn't feeling it...so bigleathercouch.com it is!

I hope y'all make the changes on your links and it might even clear up the problems some of you may have been having.

A new installment of Tuneage Tutelage - New Music Monday will be back next Monday...

Be brutally honest in the comments. If y'all are not feeling the look, then you are not coming back. Is it easier to read and navigate? Soon I am going to have sone java abilities and am hoping to add a more dynamic interface (that sound all geeky, didn't it?....oh well)...

  2. I like this soooooooo much more than your old site. It's a major improvement. If you make the same improvements in your content, you'll have a real winner. Bada Bing. Cheers Vin, it does look good!!

  3. DrillerAA Says:
  4. Well, you know how it goes, so far so good. Congratulations on the new look. I do like some of the changes. You're right about the tendency of the posts to rung together. Maybe a larger and different color font would remedy that.
The black takes a little getting used to, but I think I'm going to like it. Yes, the larger font is nice...thank you for that. I know you'll get the other stuff worked out. I am envious of your abilities...I've just never been bright enough or bold enough to do anything but change colors to a standard blogspot template.

  5. AtriaBooks Says:
  6. What a handsome new format...sleek, Vinny!

  7. LAC Says:
  8. Looks great, my friend!

Very much easier to follow. And the background makes it much easier to "see" and read the words.

Did you always have the label list? Saw a few I want to check out... see you later.

  9. Liz Hill Says:
  10. Thanks for the mention! I too did some messing around with templates this weekend on my food blog. You should come see;-)

I know you worked very hard on this. I'm so happy for you.

  11. Travis Cody Says:
  12. I have to disagree with Starr on the dark background. It hurts my eyes to try to read light type off the dark background.

I know people like it because the photos and other things stand out against the black. But it's harder for me to read.

But if you like it, then it's all good. Congrats on the change to your own .com!

  13. Dianne Says:
  14. I'm with travis on the black background, it's great for photo blogs - I have it on my own photo blog but for wordy content I prefer a lighter background

but I'll read ya no matter what you look like - it's what's inside that counts :)

    and change is good

  15. MATT-MAN: So then you will be writing my content?

DRILLERAA: I have to figure out how to put a divider in between posts

    DR.B: TY SIR

STAR: Thank you. The label list was never visible before. If I can get it into a scroll box, it will be great

TURNBABY: Well you pushed me the final lap, so you deserve the shout

TRAVIS: I thought you might have a problem...I hope it does not scare you away. I am excit ed by the .com

  16. Jay Says:
  17. Congrats on the new digs dude.

I think I like the white on black. I think all bloggers should make sure that their text stands out against the background. Dark text on light background, or white text on a black background. As long as it stands out it's cool with me.

I read the posts in my reader and then come over and comment anyway, so it isn't usually a big deal.

Good job on the new blog set up Vinny!

  18. Dr. A Says:
  19. I like it. Niiiiiice!

  20. I'm getting a headache from the black background. For some reason, it doesn't bother me at my own photo blog or at Starrlight's blog, but here it's giving me eyestrain.

Other than that, it's very clean looking and seemed to load much, much faster.

  21. DIANNE: Thanks....maybe the next incarnation will be light background!

JAY: Thanks my friend...glad you likey

    DR. A: TY Sir

  22. yup, i'm liking it bond...

    smiles, bee

  23. Maggie Moo Says:
  24. This is for sure better! I like it a lot. :) And I psyched about the .com. I'm going to my blog roll right now to see if it'll work and also to my google reader to see if you'll now show up for me.

    Yay!!

  25. Maggie Moo Says:
  26. Yes!!!! Now they BOTH work. Yay!!!!!

  27. Vinny, the comments window looks funny...but I like the dark background and the new font and size. I can read everything more easily! Good job! But what is with this comment window?

  28. Oh it's cleared up now...

  29. Jeff B Says:
  30. Very nice job Vinny. I'm more of a minimalist, so all the different colors are a bit much for my own taste, but guess what? It's not my site. I say, go with what you personally like. I'll keep sitting on the couch however you have it designed. If you try to make it just right for each person, you'll be tweaking it forever.

I upped your link on my sidebar and it works perfectly now. Cool beans.

  31. BEE: Thank you

MAGGIE: WOOOOOOO I was hoping you wold be all better now!

MARY: Thanks and I am glad it cleared up as I did not change the settings for it!

  32. John Holland Says:
  33. So far I like it. I like the black background, I used to have mine black but after awhile got tired of it. But it looks good and makes reading easier for me. I like the scroll buttons on the sides, helps keep some things smaller. I am so computer dumb when it comes to things like that. And the .com name, great...I've been thinking about that, just not sure how to go about it (see reference above to being computer dumb).

But best of all, I can now link to you!!!!!!!!!! You are offically on my sidebar now! I don't know why it wouldn't let me before, but now it does and I'm happy.

  34. Dana Says:
  35. I confess, I didn't read all of the comments, so this may have already been mentioned. I love the new look - far more professional looking - far easier to navigate. My only issue is how this feeds into my reader (Google Reader). The yellow font prints as black (GOOD), the tan font prints as tan (readable on the white background of Reader, but a little more difficult to see) and the blue prints as light blue on the white background of the reader (difficult to read). I don't know if you have any control over that, but thought I'd let you know!

  36. Are you trying to tell me something? You missed me AGAIN!

  37. Nice look, Vinny!! Welcome to The Dark Side ;)

Tip for Trav - If you right click and select the text on the post it might make it easier to read. I do that with light colored backgrounds!

  38. Tug Says:
  39. Wow, what a change! I have a hard time with black backgrounds - when I close it out & go back to my regular screen, it takes time for my eyes to adjust - I get the 'stars' in my eyes??

Rolling up the topics would be great - but heck, doesn't matter what I think. It's your site, do what you want - I'll be back no matter what!

  40. RW Says:
  41. Hey Vin it looks real good! I have a question? Why don't you enable post pages in your Blogger settings? That way if I want to look at just a single post and cut down on HTML code from other post (sometimes that causes interference with all the flashplayers on the page) All I have to do is click on the post tittle and it will take me to the individual post and comments together. Something to think about.

  42. JOHN: You know...you can get your own domain right through blogger-410 for the year and it will move your blog right over...

DANA: Have no idea why it does that in google reader, you are the only one to mention it

SONGBIRD: I have to stop trying to answer from my Crackberry

    STARR: ty my friend

TUG: I always have given women stars in their eyes! LOL

ROGER: Thanks..I responded to you via email...I am set up for that

  43. RW Says:
  44. Oh shit! Yes you are I was clicking on the date on top of the tittle my apologies Vin it does work well.

  45. Kimmie Says:
  46. Hey Vinnybond!

I Love the new look! I am a big fan of black so it is kewl with me! Very hip and it loaded so fast for me this time. As far as the couch, it is wherever you are my friend. :-)

    Happy St. Patrick's Day!

    Hugs,
    Kimmie

  47. TopChamp Says:
  48. My eyes are too sore after another stupidly long day for me to judge sensibly. I didn't want you to think I was ignorning it though, hence the comment!

  49. Julie Says:
  50. I think it's bolder then I saw a couple days ago. So that's a good thing. I like the notes running throughout!

    Good job!

  51. katherine. Says:
  52. I really like it....but I almost forgot where I was...smile..
