Congrats to STAR8278 of "...All Things Work For Good", she is the winner of the Silentreatment's Sinful Acts Of Audio CD, from last week. Star, just email me your snail mail address and I will get the CD to you.

This week, I want to fill you in on the comings and goings of the music business and then let you rate a local Memphis group who found me.

On June 23, Columbia records will release Pete Yorn’s Back and Fourth marking a new musical chapter in which the acclaimed singer and songwriter has taken a different approach to writing and recording with stunning results. Back and Fourth follows Yorn’s first three albums, which he considers a trilogy, and is his first album in three years. Yorn wrote all ten songs on Back and Fourth and recorded the album in Omaha, NE, with producer Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, Rilo Kiley). Columbia’s Co-Chairman Rick Rubin helped guide the project from its earliest demo stages to final mastering.

The songs on Back and Fourth range from lilting mandolin lullabies to bracing anthems. But there’s a thread running through the album - an organic feel to the arrangements, a careful pacing to the sequence, a penetrating truth to the stories - that’s unmatched by anything else in Yorn’s catalog.

Check out Mr. Yorn's website HERE or his myspace page HERE.

You can also get a free download of the song "Don't Wanna Cry", over at SPINNER.com.

Wild Light just released their critically acclaimed debut, Adult Nights on March 3rd off of StarTime International. Recorded in Los Angeles with producer Rob Schnapf (Elliott Smith, Beck, Guided By Voices), the album features 13 original tracks co-written by all four members.

The result is classic Americana pop that sweeps over you with distinct vocal harmonies complimented by warm and dynamic arrangements. The songs reflect the timeless American spirit, whether it be the fall foliage, changing of the seasons, or a summer day at the lake. Rooted in the New Hampshire motto of “Live Free or Die,” the album addresses an unknown but open future for Wild Light – a theme constant in the life of many today.

Check out "California On My Mind" HERE and "My Father Was A Horse" HERE.

Columbia Records announced today that Bob Dylan’s new studio album will be released on April 28. Together Though Life, produced by Jack Frost, was recorded late last year, prompted by the composition of a new song, “Life Is Hard,” which was written for a forthcoming film by French director Oliver Dahan (La Vie En Rose).

The new album will be the 46th release from Bob Dylan. His website can be found HERE.

Finally, as I mentioned above, I received an email from these guys They are local here in Memphis and their email gave me a link to their youtube video.

SO, they know the drill, here is the video, and now you guys, rate their musical performance...The name of the band is Jump Back Jake. Their website can be found HERE.
They will be appearing on the main stage on May 2nd at the Beale Street Music Festival.

From their bio:
While the name Jump Back Jake is directly aligned with lead singer/guitarist/lyricist Jake Rabinbach, the band is no one-man act. Instead, the quartet (and sometimes sextet) prides itself as being a group of players along the lines of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section or the Hawks.

To cement that fact, lead guitarist Jake Vest, bassist Brandon Robertson and drummer Greg Faison, were all doing time in other successful bands (The Third Man, Snowglobe, and Antique Curtains, respectively) when they were approached to join JBJ. All it took was hearing the heavy grooves and hooks Rabinbach brought with him to Memphis from Brooklyn to convince his brethren in soul to take up the cause.

It was a sound both familiar and new that the others were excited to explore. The concept behind the band was pretty simple; in terms of what they didn’t want to do. They did not intend to record music on computers, they were dead-set against overdubbing their vocal harmonies, and they did not want in any way to resemble your standard over-blogged indie rock. Alternatively, the plan has always been to bring their lean, muscular swamp–boogie sound to dives, roadhouses, frat bars, and rock clubs throughout the mid-south to continue to develop and expand their musical chops with each show.

Formed in 2006, Jump Back Jake plays raw soul-flavored rock and roll with dance grooves and horn lines that tout a modern writing approach.

Their debut record, Brooklyn Hustle / Memphis Muscle, produced by Pete Matthews at the legendary Ardent Studios, is the first release from Ardent Music, the newly reactivated Memphis label that launched power-pop pioneers Big Star.

Jump Back Jake is:
“Jump Back” Jake Rabinbach: Guitar, Vocals
Greg Faison: Drums
Jake Vest: Guitar, Vocals
Brandon Robertson: Bass
Nahshon Benford: Trumpet
Paul Morelli: Sax

Well, give the video a watch and let them know what you think. Personally, I am going to have to get out there and see these guys live.

20 Of Your Sparks

  1. Coco Says:
  2. Good morning Vinny. I didn't recognize your blog when I got here today. It's very streamlined now and looks quite professional, but not as homey as it used to was. I can't find your linky things to other peoples' blogs anymore and that's how I used to travel from blog to blog. Yeah, I know it's the lazy way to do it when I should have been keeping my own list updated, but I don't do "efficient".

Hope all is well. My best to you and Nancy and everyone else.

  3. COCO: Hope you found the links...Thanks for stopping by

  4. LAC Says:
  5. wOOHOO!! I am so happy to get some new tunes!!! Thanks. I will email you in a sec.

Really like that memphis group, bluesy but modern.

  6. Jay Says:
  7. It says "We're sorry this video is no longer available."

Hmmm ... Have you made YouTube enemies? ;-)

  8. Pete Yorn I know. He is on regular rotation at my radio station KNRK cause they are made of awesome.

I LOVE Wild Light! Must get that album. His voice kinda reminds me of Adam from the Counting Crows.

Dexter needs to grow back his dreads and they need to play the Portland date on the Warped Tour. Kidlet is a HARDCORE Offspring fan =)

Five For Fighting is a great "band" ...well John is awesome. Always feel funny calling them a band. If you have not heard much from him, check him out. I own the last two albums.

I liked JBJ. Had a sort of DMB vibe.

  9. Jump Back Jake, from this video, seems like a group I would like.

I am a bit surprised the Offspring don't have a date in Atlanta.

  10. John Holland Says:
  11. I'm not quite decided on Jump Back Jake. The first video when you click the link I didn't like and didn't even finish watching. The second, the cover by Dr. John is better, but I guess the jury is still out on them as far as I'm concerned. It's hard to do a cover when its a song you already love by the original so much and that's how I feel about the Dr. John song. So it might be some of that.

Wild Light I like but didn't go crazy over. It might be I'm too tired to make any definite decisions right now, so maybe I should come back and listen to everyone when I've had more than two hours sleep in the last thirty hours.

  12. STAR: On the way to you

JAY: Hummm not sure why it did that to you

STARR: thanks for the info...I always know you will know the people I am talking about

SOUTHERN: I am going to have to find JBJ here in town

JOHN: It seems like you need the rest...come on back later!

  13. Mimi Lenox Says:
  14. Mimi is waving and saying thanks for the music and the couch and the friendly vibe here but she honestly did not listen to the music today and yes well I have reasons but I'm too pooped to tell ya or even punctuate this sentence at the moment so I'll just be going now.
I really need to stop talking in third person and writing run-on sentences. Going to take a nap........

Have a happy Monday! And a smooch to Darlin'.

  15. MIMI: Get some rest my friend....and thanks for coming by

  16. Ralph Says:
  17. I like the Wild Light "California on my mind". Pop sound it's true, going back to ninth grade 1969-1970. Simple harmonies, and the running time of 2:34 was a length reminiscent of an old 45..."Horse" goes back for me to 67-68. Who or what I cannot say. It just evokes an era for me.

For Jump Back Jake, the guitar sound sort of reminds me of Jerry Garcia. I'd say very early 70s, like Blind Faith.

It's hard for me to forget an era!

  18. Dana Says:
  19. I've never met a band with horns that I didn't like, and Jump Back Jake is no exception!

I am a huge fan of the southern, soul-flavored rock - they do it very well!

  20. Tug Says:
  21. I like JBJ all right, but I'm thinking they'd be tons better in person!

  22. Maggie Moo Says:
  23. I LOVE 5 for Fighting. I saw him live a couple of years ago and he sounds amazing. He sings with such soul too-just an answer performer.

  24. Jeff B Says:
  25. Watched the video and thoroughly enjoyed it!

JBJ- you guys have a great sound and I will be looking for your stuff.

    Thanks Vinny.

  26. Travis Cody Says:
  27. I like JBJ. The sound takes me back to the 70s, like Ralph said. How cool that they sought you out.

And I'm a fan of John Ondrasik. I was introduced to this "band" by a fellow SPer.

    Good stuff today Sir!

  28. RALPH: Great take on the music today Sir.

  29. DANA: Yes they do and who can't luv a gal who likes bands with horns!

    TUG: Yup Yup...my feeling exactly

MAGS: Nice when an artist reaches us like he does you.

JEFFB: DUDE! Thanks - glad you enjoyed their stuff.

TRAVIS: Glad you enjoyed them. And it was very cool, so I will definitely return the favor by going to see them.

  30. Liz Hill Says:
  31. Cool beans--maybe you could do a vlog when you see JBJ

  32. Unknown Says:
  33. Awesome post! I'm not sure if I forwarded the Jump Back Jake info to you or not but thanks for posting. I did want to let everyone know that you can stream their entire album free at http://jumpbackjake.bandcamp.com and they'll be playing tomorrow night (April 8) at the Hi-Tone with Jeffrey James and The Haul. And they'll also be playing at 1pm this Saturday for a Crawfish Broil at The Bayou in midtown. Once again, thanks for posting.
