Ya know...there are times when it seems like no one wants the music...so this time, I ask you...Did you want Kalliopi's EP...three songs, two of which were not played last week...
Just saying.....
This week, meet Mr. Dare Dukes. With influences the likes of Wilco, Sparklehorse, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Chad VanGaalen, Pixies and Laura Veirs, you might see why he has been compared to Sparklehorse, Okkervil River, Neil Young, Laura Veirs and Grandaddy.
OK, raise you hand if you have heard of any of them besides Neil Young? Anyone...Bueller???
OK, so really, I have heard of Wilco and have heard their music, and the Pixies...but the rest...I am unfamiliar.
SO, I put the CD in and hit play and it has been on for three songs now and I have not ejected it...OK, I do admit, there are times I can not listen to the entire song by some of the artists I feature, but I am dedicated...Heck-A-Doodle, I SAY...DEDICATED! - Holy Lou Y'all, to putting out all sorts of music to you, my special guests and let y'all sort it out!
Interesting sound...I certainly heard the heavy Neil Young influence in "Sam's Cathedral".
We learn from his bio:
Born and raised in the exurb of San Jose, California, Dare grew up as the state blossomed into what he calls, "exit-ramp culture"—a maze of smoked-glass franchises and cookie-cutter subdivisions that took root along the vast network of interstate freeways.
"Everyone knows the clichés about suburbia: It's a stark, sanitized landscape, pretty much soulless,” Dare explains. “No one needs to remind us of that. I'm more interested in the poetry I see there--the weirdness, the anomalies, the resistance. Even in this unlikely grid you can find courageous people and precious things."
Moving to Minneapolis in his twenties, Dare began playing music as bands like Soul Asylum, Babes in Toyland, and the Jayhawks were emerging to define that city's post-Replacements sound. Influenced by seminal post-punk groups like the Pixies and Fugazi, and musical raconteurs like Tom Waits and Kurt Weill, Dare fronted the Penelopes, a frenetic quartet that was a fixture in the city's rock clubs.
After moving to New York City, Dare took a hiatus from music to focus on writing and theater, but began playing out again, backed by friends and expert musicians Mark Boquist and Paul Garisto. This collaboration led to the bulk of the arrangements for the songs Dare produced for Prettiest Transmitter of All.
I can tell you that Duke's explores the side of America, just out of sight...as he sings in "Lucas Goes to The Demolition Derby";

Surrounded by these amateurs
Come for pink popcorn and beer
They've no appreciation
for the painted Impala
Like some deadly jungle bird.

The arrangements are stark and there are some inconsistencies with some of the songs, but overall, if you are a fan of a mixture of Indie Rock, Folk and country, you will find some interesting tuneage here.

Memphis in May...have some good BBQ for me.
I can't believe Jerry Lee Lewis can still play. I saw him on tv about ten years ago and he was NOT good then. The boy is 73 or 74 years old now. There are way too many good acts coming to town town waste much time in his tent. I know he's a rock and roll legend, even one of the founding fathers, but I don't think I'd spend the time to see him now.
That's quite the lineup coming the Memphis. Wow. Survive your Monday....
Dare Dukes ...
Interesting. I'm loving the acoustic guitar, the lyrics, the tunes, but having difficulty with the vocals. I think it's just a little heavy on the folk side for me, but I did listen to both of the songs in their entirety. *shrugs*
I had hopes to get to Nashville this month, however it doesn't look good - maybe Memphis in May?
That's quite a mix of artists going to Memphis! It's interesting to see Bonnie Raitt and Snoop Dog in the same place!! :) I'd want to go mostly on the 3rd-because of Amos Lee.
I want to see James Taylor before I die.
wow! that is an eclectic and amazing line-up!
I hate it that Memphis in May is the same weekend as Jazz Fest down here. I'd love to come, it's a great line up...some of the acts must be doing double duty cause they're down here the weekend previous. They need to coordinate these big Fests so we can see them both.
Ok, I've only been able to listen to a little of Dare so far as I'm on my way to work, but I love what I hear so far. Most of the influences you mentioned of his are some of my favorite acts...Wilco is probably my favorite band and the others are some of my favorites.
Ok, I'm going to come back later and listen to all of these songs in their full.
sounds like a great Memphis this May....smile.
I think Mr Dukes presents a very limited opinion of San Jose....
That Memphis in May lineup looks pretty damn cool. To bad you have to go to Memphis to enjoy it. HA! ;-)
Really liked the instrumental portions of both songs, but the vocals don't appeal to me. To downcast for my taste.
I'm hearing Simon and Garfunkel meets Kermit the Frog.
DRILLERAA: Jerry Lee gets some stage time every year as the reigning father of Memphis R&R. He actually still puts on a lively show.
BUD: Great lineup this year
DANA: Thanks for your thoughts...come on down for MIM...or maybe later this summer (wink)
MAGS: Probably not the same stage...but the mixture is quite eclectic
MIMI: Then come on over for MIM!
DIANNE: Yes it is...they do a hell of a job each year
JOHN: I know, I hear that a lot...the two are so close (one week apart) and there are always overlaps
KATHERINE: He apologizes...no not really, I have no idea why he is so opinionated on it
JAY: Yeah well maybe you will come down for a day..I will protect you
Meh. Not for me. But at least he's easier on the puppy's ears...unlike some of what passes for music these days! LOL :P
There is a great quality to acoustic...anything! No solid body semi-artificial quality to the resonance of a non-electric instrument. I like both songs, they bring me back to late 60s, but who? I'm glad you didn't eject the CD!
This week, not for me...but wow - what a lineup for MIM - I'm sure it'll be an awesome time!
I liked the stripped down accoustical guitar in both songs. It's pretty daring to put your vocals to that. I don't dislike it.
And echoing the gang...fantastic line up for Memphis in May!
MERI: Thanks for 'barking' in...appreciate the feedback.
RALPH: Glad youo enjoyed them. Thanks for weighing in...
TUG: Sorry...can't please all the people..yadda yadda LOL...Should be a great weekend..now, I need to see how badly it interferes with Nancy's boys sporting activities
TRAVIS: Thanks...I do like the music a lot...
What, was it something I said?
What horrible timing. I have to work that weekend.
It's probably better. I don't know that I would even leave the SoCo Blues Shack with that lineup alone.
OH MAN! I would have to see

Liked the music by Duke Dare. I can hear Wilco and the Pixies.
I think the lyrics of that first song are soooooo bad it makes it quite difficult to listen to.
It's not often I think how much better a SONG would be without the words.
At the risk of offending your audience - I don't like his accent either. Sounds a bit Sesame Street.
That festival sounded amazing last year. I take it you'll be there?!
No - I don't want Kalliopi's album.
