Honestly, I do not remember where I shot this. It was a number of years ago in the woods somewhere. I came across this downed tree that had been hit by lightening (noticed the black burns at the edges. It just caught my eye and I snapped it.

I tweaked the contrast and nothing more.

Hope you enjoy.

I have been waiting for the promo CD before announcing this, but American/Columbia Records have signed The Avett Brothers, an extraordinary band from North Carolina who combine dozens of strands of musical DNA (Rock, Pop, Classic Country and more) into a completely unique form of American music. Their first album for Columbia , produced by Rick Rubin, will be released in 2009. The Avett Brothers have nine previous independent releases under their belts, the most recent of which, The Second Gleam, came out in July.

I am a tad ticked at myself as they just appeared here in Memphis this past weekend...but with Mom and Dad in town, it was not to be...

They have earned their place in my rotation. I like the sound they have put together and think putting them together with the most excellent Rick Rubin will be incredible.

Here is their upcoming schedule:

September 10-Tulsa, OK-Cain’s Ballroom

September 11-Dallas, TX-Granada Theater

September 12-Ozark, AR-Mulberry Mountain Harvest Music Festival

September 14-Morrison, CO-Monolith Festival

September 16-Lawrence, KS-Liberty Hall

September 19-Roanoke, VA-Jefferson Center-Shaftman Performance Hall

September 20-Charlottesville, VA-Charlottesville Pavilion

September 21-Baltimore, MD-Pier Six Pavilion

Two songs from the sampler I received. The first is from the 2008 EP The Second Gleam, and is called "Murder In The City". The second is from their 2004 album Mignonette and is entitled "Swept Away (Sentimental Version)".

  1. Dana Says:
  2. Love the photo Vinny - great texture.

Now, The Avett Brothers? I think I'd have to listen to a bit more to decide if I really enjoy them. Interesting sound - almost folk-y.

  3. Schmoop Says:
  4. Bob Rocks...Taking pictures of "wood" again, are ya? Cheers Vinny!!

  5. DrillerAA Says:
  6. The Aveet Brothers are playing in my "home town" tonight. Cain's ballroom in Tulsa is legendary. It would be the local equivalent to the Ryman auditorium in Nashville, except that Cain's has always been a dance hall. It was the home of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys for nine years. The Sex Pistols, Elvin Bishop and Leon Russell has performed there.
    Have a great day.

  7. Ken Says:
  8. Murder in the City was cretainly not what I expected , it was touching. Really liked the lines about father and sister.

    Some sweet harmony here.

  13. Love the picture. I can't do your music on your site at work, but I CAN YouTube. Just went and listened to them and they are AWESOME! And Rick Rubin too? The only thing that could have been better than that would be T Bone. Thanks for turning me on to these guys!

    Mr.Zimmerman is the man.

  14. I'll have to come back for the tunes, but I love the photo.

  15. Patti Says:
  16. I like this photo of the charred by lightning branch. Very interesting subject matter!

When I saw the photo of the Avett Brothers, it looked like something from the early '60s. Everything old is new again, huh?

  17. Fred Says:

  27. I can't top Matt's comment! bwahahahahahahahahahahaha!

I'M not about to call them extraordinary after two songs. The singer's voice reminds me of Ed Robertson.

Who's the target market Travis is referring to? I thought the PR company wanted a diverse group?
