My Super Bowl XLII Diary…

Sparks Of Insanity By Vinny "Bond" Marini Monday, February 04, 2008

8:00 am : Wake up and make some breakfast…first make some home fries with onions and some bacon and when all is ready, mix up some eggs with a few shots of Tabasco and pour over the potatoes and eggs and bacon on the griddle and let the eggs set.
YUM… an instant omelet…

10:00 am – 1:00pm:
Start getting the food for the day ready by sectioning about 6 pounds of chicken wings…put 2 pounds on a aluminum sheet pan and put into the oven at 425 degrees…

Check the Bruschetta mixture we put together on Saturday evening to ensure the flavors have mingled just right… yup…yummo…

Slice up a French Baguette and put slices into oven to brown. When browned rub them on both sides with sliced garlic cloves…(put some of the Tomato & Basil mixture on 2 or 3 and try (Hey…have to make sure it is good)

TV on in the background - ESPN - and the whole world is picking the Patriots – does not surprise us at all…but hell, we love being the underdog…

Turn the wings to crisp the other side…

Mix up the sauce for the second batch of wings, Maple Wings, which consists of maple syrup (yup the real stuff), soy sauce, teriyaki sauce, garlic, garlic powder, onion powder…Pour over the wings in an aluminum pan and set aside…

Take wings out of the oven and put into bowl and pour Buffalo hot sauce over them and mix well…put into serving dish and cover with wrap…try 2 or 3 (Hey…have to make sure they are good)

Lower the over to 350 and put Maple Wings in and cook for an hour...increase the heat and cook another 45 minutes…

Remove form oven and try 2 or 3 (hey…have to make sure they are good)

Talk to mom and dad and make sure all is well in Florida…take a shower…

1:30 pm – 5:00 pm:

Put on FOX and watch their pre-game in the background as we answer some emails and make some calls to friends who we have spent past Super Bowls with…

Nancy makes a cheese dip from Velvetta and Rotelle and also uses some Sweet Pepper and Pineapple Relish and cream cheese for another dip…when they are ready, we try some of both while she is out running…(hey have to make sure they are good)

Pour our first Gentleman Jack with 3 ice cubes…

All the talking heads are pushing the Patriots throughout the pre-game

About 3:10, the Pepsi commercial we shared with all y’all last week airs…

Switch over to the PGA a couple of times to see how Phil Mickelson is doing with Tiger winning another tournament over in Dubai

Arg…have to listen to Bob Kraft spout accolades about his team…

Football and Ryan Seacrest DO NOT go hand in hand…this Red Carpet thing is a real joke folks…

Paula Abdul sings her new song she recorded for Randy Jackson’s new album…yawn

Finally at 4:00 pm they leave the fluff of the Red Carpet and focus on football…

This Frank Caliendo guy does nothing for us…how many routines do we have to watch???

Nancy’s boys will be home before kick-off…whew…thought we would have to eat all this food by ourselves…as they are both Ole Miss fans, thus they are also Eli fans, so the house will be for the Giants

LOL…Mickelson missed a putt on 18 by about 6“ and is forced into a play-off…he just does not have the killer instinct…

Call Matt and wish his team good luck…as we have said, his allegiance to the Patriots began from his being in MA from the time he was 5 until 10…

Time for the FOX talking heads to make their picks…gee…let’s see how this goes…
Terry: Patriots - wants to see history
Howie: Patriots and he puts on a Red Sox hat
Jimmy: Patriots
Frank: NY Giants (maybe we like this guy after all!)

FOX presents a reading of the Declaration Of Independence by past and present stars of the NFL…we choke up when Michael Strahan is shown at Ground Zero in NY with members of the NYFD…and when the widow of Pat Tillman reads her portions…

Nicely done FOX…

5:00 pm – Pre-Game show

Game time 30 minutes…time for another drink…

The Road Warrior, Resilient NY Giants come out onto the field…the cheers indicate they have many fans in the stadium…

The NE Patriots then run out onto the field…were there as many boos as cheers for them, we truly could not tell…but the sounds were different…

Want to see this new movie “Vantage Point”…it looks like a winner…

Jordin Sparks will get to sing the National Anthem…we ask this every year…why can they NOT sing it live???? It is done in stadiums and arenas around the country almost daily…yet on Super Bowl Sunday, it is a recording…

She did a nice job with it though…

Wings into the oven to reheat…Chili is warming on the stove…

Coin-toss coming up…who will get the ball first?

Roof is closed in Arizona…did you win that wager? LOL…sure it was on the board in Vegas

Sheesh there are like 750,000 people out in the center of the field for the toss…and the Giants win the toss….

5:30 pm – KICK-OFF

And the first commercial will be…Bud Light…Breathe Fire…poor kitty…

Opening drive for the Giants stalls inside the 20...that is not a good thing...Field Goal time...

GIANTS up 3 - 0

Diet Pepsi Max – Bobble-head … hehehehehe

Under Armor does a commercial very similar to the Macintosh 1984 commercial we shared on Friday, only in their commercial, they are the hero…

Penalties will kill you every time… Pass interference continues the NE drive…

NE 7 – 3

Did you log on to godaddy.com to see the Danica Patrick commercial? Huh? Didja?
Not surprised FOX turned it down at all…

Gee…Plaxico …hold on to the damn ball…

Then Amani Toomer shows how it is done…GREAT CATCH

Ooooooooooo the chili we made a few weeks ago has aged nicely…yummy…dang.. we need another beer…

Liked the Bridgestone commercial with the screaming animals as the car barrels down on the squirrel…funny

Interception NE

Budweiser “Rocky” commercial hearkened back to the days they did good ads…YEA!

Giants defense stops NE on a great play…

Incredible that NE did not get possession on a fumble but the Giants go 3 and out….

Giants using the run much more effectively…but then a fumble and a loose ball puts them at 3rd and 18…

Planters Cashews commercial…excellent use of humor…LOL

LOVED watching JT getting beat up in the Pepsi commercial …..bwahahahahahahahahahahaha

Giants had the Pats stopped and then give up 2 - 3rd and 13 first downs…and the Pats are moving the ball…

FUMBLE…recovered by the Giants

Giants defensive, especially Justin Tuck, has been all over Tom Brady so far…they must keep it up…have only given up 81 yards to NE in the first half…

End Of The First Half … NE 7 – 3

OK, gonna call TurnBaby while the halftime show is on…

That is done and listening to Tom Petty…we do like Tom and we are assured that nothing controversial will happen…

SECOND HALF

Giants bend, but force a punt by NE…or did they? Did the Giants have 12 men on the field? It looked like he got off in time…

OK, Salesgenie.com you wasted you money folks…your commercials are horrible…

Review…12 men on the field and NE gets a first down…penalties…

Then they put the brakes on the drive and NE goes for it on 4th and 14 and do not make it…they decided not to go for the 49 yard field goal…interesting call…

Giants need to get in the end zone here…

Eli missed a read and did not see Toomer wide open…Giants punt

Ball downed at the 10 yard line and then NE gets a penalty and starts at the 5…BIG BIG need for the Giants to stop them here…

Like the looks of “Jumper”…

“The Ability To Fly”…ouch that hurts…. Heheheh Bud Light stepping up this year…

Again, the Giants bend, but do not break….and NE has to punt to start the 4th quarter…

Excellent NFL ad focusing on Chester Pitts of the Houston Texans…did not know his story…most excellent…

LOL Coke commercial with the balloons from the Macy’s parade all fighting for the Coke bottle… heheheheh

Third quarter ends NE 7 - 3

FOURTH QUARTER – as Travis just said to me…15 to a Championship

Giants ball...

BIG BIG pass to the TE Boss for a huge gain,…45 yards…

Then a nice pass to the rookie Smith…and a TD pass to David Tyree

Giants 10 – 7 …

Oooooooooooooo Big Wheel racing….now THAT would be fun….

FOX pushing “Terminator” hard…it is a great show… you should watch…

Giants D steps up again and forces another NE punt…

Now the offense needs to just hold onto the ball…and run down the clock

E*Trade has a new star…a baby making trades….heheheh in the first he spits up at the end…this time he hires a clown…and realizes it is ‘creepy’…

Plaxico Burris … he has helped the Giants get here, but not having a good game tonight…

Giants have to punt it away … one more defensive hold…one more…

And NE drives the field for a TD …14 -10

Giants have to go 83 yards in 2:39 with 3 time outs left…

Eli Manning makes a great play getting away from a sack and throws down field…David Tyree makes the catch…ball at the 24 yard line

Pass to the end zone….Plaxico all alone…TOUCHDOWN…great route…

Giants 17 – 14!

Love the shot of big brother Peyton shouting in the luxury box…

:35 seconds left …

Defense has to just play smart…NE has 3 time-outs …

Incomplete pass…

Sack of Brady… :19 left…. 3rd and 20

Pass…long downfield….tipped…

4th and 20… :10 left

Long pass….incomplete…and

THE GIANTS WIN SUPER BOWL XLII

Congrats to the team no one gave a chance…never during the entire playoffs did anyone give them a chance…
  • They had to travel to Tampa Bay...and they won...
  • They had to travel to Dallas...and they won...
  • They had to travel to Green Bay...and they won...they shut down the running game of the Packers (28 total yards)...
  • Today they totally shut down the running game of the Patriots (43 total yards) and today they are CHAMPS
WTF ..why did Bellichek leave the field????? He came out to the center of the field and the refs made everyone get off the field since there was 1 second left on the clock, yet he headed for the tunnel...weird

Miami remains the only NFL team to go undefeated and win the Super Bowl….

Eli is no longer Peyton’s little brother…He is named MVP...second year in a row a Manning is the MVP!

Tom Coughlin
, whose job was on the line after week two this year is now the coach of the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS...

A special shout to Dad Vince...a lifelong Giants fan, who we spoke with at the end of the game and he was just so very excited....THEY DID IT DAD!

hummm guess there will be a video posted today or tomorrow over at Mr. Fab's site...poor bas&&rd...thought he was funny and that his team would win...when he posts it, we will give you the link to watch him pay off his bet...

Finally, we will be posting some of our fav commercials tomorrow, but if you want to see them all today, you can go over to SPIKE - powered by iFilm to watch them...we received an email just now inviting us to post them and send people over to the site...

We can not upload the obvious choice, QUEEN "We Are The Champions"...so, since the New York Football Giants are all ready to have one...

  1. Just moving a couple of comments that came in on Friday's post, right after the game and before this was posted:

    Tug said...
OMG OMG OMG - the GIANTS!!! I seriously didn't think they'd win (sorry - I'm a Rams fan, what do I know??), BUT YAY!!! I am SO done with the Patriots...(and was many years ago I might add)
SO very happy for you, you Giants fan you!!

    Starrlight said...
    BIG BLUE OWNS!

    Congrats to your NY Giants!
    Super Bowl Champions.
What an increadible game by the defensive line!!!

    katherine. said...
I am sure you are a happy guy.
can't wait to see the payoff on the bet....smile.

  2. TUG: AH TY so much...most did not think they would win...you were not alone...

STARRLIGHT: They own the TROPHY and NY and will get their parade on Tuesday

JEFFB: TY Sir...The Defense was truly the star of the game

KATHERINE: I am and I can not wait myself

  3. I was soooo excited! What a great end to the game!

  4. Travis Cody Says:
  5. Woooooooooooooooo!!!

Nice succinct recap on the day. The food sounded great.

This was definitely one of the top 3 all time Super Bowl games. The post game stuff has been brutal for NE...but if you can't finish the deal and get a championship in your great season, then you takes what you gets. They would have basked big time in the 19-0, so they can suffer with the label failure for going 18-1 and losing the Super Bowl.

As for Eli and the G-Men, sweet revenge!

  6. Anndi Says:
  7. Congrats Vince... It was a great game, one for the books. An 18 game streak is still an 18 game streak despite what someone I know has said.

Eli played well and was given enough space to do his thing. Bellichek has some work to do with offensive line.

Now, excuse me while I console a grumpy 9 year old.

  8. 108/KYRA: I leapt off the couch when the TD was caught and almost hit my head on the 12 foot high ceiling...

TRAVIS: It is incredible how far a team can fall, and how fast in the eyes of the analysts they are just ripping them apart...

ANNDI: It is one for the books...it was an incredible streak, but they set themselves up for the fall and when you are put so high on a pedestal, it is a long way down...
The O line was great all year, they just met a determined defense...
Sorry Chicklet is so grumpy...I have a 20 year old who is disappointed.

  9. Twyla Says:
  10. I'm a little ashamed to say, that I didn't even know what teams were playing in the Superbowl. I didn't even turn on the TV at all last night. I must be living under a rock. LOL But, your snacks sound delicious. It would be worth going to a Superbowl party, just for the food. :-)

  11. RW Says:
  12. Great play by play Vin, that was a damm good game! That etrade commercial was Hilarius, enjoy your leftovers!!

  13. Anonymous Says:
  14. Thanks for that special shout. Yes, they really did it and they should be congratulated big time as should the Mara family who have bled BLUE since 1925.

My phone was busy for an hour after the game with the final call coming from that disappointed NE fan at about 11:00PM. Well, at least my grandson is a Yankee fan:)

  15. what a game, i watched to the end, i have not done that with a super bowl lately....nothing boring about this one

  16. Anndi Says:
  17. Vince...

'they set themselves up for the fall and when you are put so high on a pedestal, it is a long way down'

You begrudge them their streak? So they shouldn't have had that great season and therefore asked for it? I suppose had the Giants not won it wouldn't have mattered since they weren't favoured then eh?

    Wow...

I hope your Matt knows better than to teach the kids he coaches that the only game that matters is the final one.
So kids, what's the lesson we learn from this: be sure and lose a couple during the season so people don't rip you to shreds and snicker when you lose the big game... They'll call you a failure.

What is it about people who become gleeful over watching someone who has excelled throughout a season have a bad game?

  18. As horrible as I was feeling yesterday, and despite my resolution, I did manage to tune in from time to time. I saw the final minutes in their entirety.

Good God - history WAS made! Back to back years when brothers were Super Bowl MVPs? Cool!

  19. Belechick leaving the field before the clock had run out and leaving his players out there is just a perfect example of what a classles lump of shite the man is. He loses and runs off the field like a whiny little bitch :P

I loathe him if you can't tell. And Tom Brady.

  20. OBLadyBug Says:
  21. Great Game, good food, surrounded by Giant Fans ... what more could I ask for? Great recap of a wonderful day my dear.

  22. Liz Hill Says:
  23. Well MY take on the BLUE today is that Jared Lorenzen--of the real BIg Blue (UK) has a Super Bowl ring--who da thunk it!!

And I can't wait to see Fabby's video.

  24. TWYLA: Most Super Bowl parties end up being about the food and the people you share it with....many times the game gets lost...

ROGER: It was a great game and there is plenty of left-overs!

DAD: LOL...glad he got to you..he was concerned with the time he was going to call...and yes, he is a Yankee fan!

SARGE: Glad you enjoyed...so did I!

ANNDI: My comment was a refection on how history is going to treat them...nothing more...(The Boston Herald headline today was "History Derailed")
They are being called 'failures' by the media at large...is it fair? I am not in agreement - and did not call them that once. They had a very successful season...but, they were also on the losing end of the "biggest upset in the history of the NFL and the Super Bowl" (another paraphrase of quotes being used)
The people who report on and analyze the sport put them on the pedestal and now they are being looked upon as not completing the task. Sorry, but I am not gleeful...I am happy for my team who won and did not slam the team that did not...
A champion is crowned in every sport, which means they won the last game, so the last game does count for that.
How you react to a loss in the final game is what counts. My only knock on the Patriots was the fact that their coach walked off the field before the final gun and left his team there on their own...that was not an act of class.
As far as your question regarding the Giants, if they had lost, it would not have mattered to the nation at large, because, as you pointed out, they were not favored...the were supposed to lose the game. Would it have been disappointing to me personally, yes...but the fact that they got to the game was improbable after the start to their season and the road they had to take.

SONGBIRD: Glad you got to enjoy the history that was made.

STARRLIGHT: So, you have a problem with them then, I guess.... heheheh

  25. Schmoop Says:
  26. Eli really steeped it up when he needed to. Congrats to the G-Men. Cheers!!

  27. NANCY: It was a wonderful day...thanks

TURNBABY: We could argue all day on who the real BIG BLUE is...glad one of your guys is getting a ring

MATT-MAN: he did as did the entire defense...they were outstanding

  28. Anndi Says:
  29. Vince, Bill was an ass.. but it shouldn't reflect on the players.
And as important as it is to be a graceful loser, many people it seems need a lesson in how to be a gracious winner.

The failure comment was directed at Travis who never struck me as unsportsmanly, should have mentionned that. My bad.

Hey wait, Nancy didn't think the food was great?

  30. ANNDI: Agree and I have not allowed it to reflect on the players at all...
I have always strived to be a grateful winner...always teaching my teams that you win AND lose with Class & Dignity...and I know Matt has picked up on that mantra as an instructor...
YEAH...HEY WHAT? NANCY>>> you got some 'splainin to do....

  31. OBLadyBug Says:
  32. Oops my bad ... awesome food! Enjoyed immensely by all; kids, friends, dogs, cat, and myself. Couldn't keep Sam, the cat away from Vinny. He usually isn't very affectionate but he has fallen in love with the Italian. Do you think it's the food? :)

  33. BeckEye Says:
  34. Salesgenie.com...almost forgot about that shit. UGH. How do they even have the money to advertise during the Super Bowl? I've never heard of it!

Well, whatever. The most important thing is that the Patriots choked. Or, should I say, they were THROTTLED and then choked. :)

IT was nice to see Pretty Boy Tom get bent in half a few times.

  35. I'm with you...LOL. I sort of thought it was over pretty much and then they scored that final td... I screamed and scared the piss out of Matthew, LOL.

  36. Congrats on the win.

Now how many sacks did Tom Brady endure? I believe I counted 5 at the half... I know there were more in the 2nd half.

I have always loved Tom Petty... but last nights half time show just didn't do anything for me. There was something missing... can't put my finger on it just yet.

Off to bed for some rest... I still don't feel good.

  37. Coco Says:
  38. Congrats Vinny, on your team's great victory. They really brought it last night. It was nice to see the "Underdogs" win. My sympathy goes to the Pats, though, for the hoorendous comments being made about them today, as well as their coach's disgraceful and embarrassing behaviour. They played a great season and there's no shame in losing ONE game, even if it was the "Big Show".

It was big B's first Superbowl and he made it all the way to halftime, and loved every minute. (There's time to educate him that he should be rooting for ONE of the teams and not BOTH, right? Didn't matter anyway, as the Steelers weren't in it.)

  39. NANCY: Well...at least the animals love me... KIDDING!

BECKEYE: I think some of these firms can follow the Monster.com road and be more successful by spending their entire ad budget for the year in one day...doubt it will happen...

108/KYRA: Well, I never gave up hope...I began my pacing routine...round and round from the den to the kitchen and through the dining room and back...LOL

DOC: I was really surprised by his actions...basically leaving his team out there all alone...poor sportsmanship and someone has to call him on it...

DIXIE: Well, I can tell you he got knocked down EIGHTEEN TIMES...5 of those were sacks...Travis and i agree on the 1/2 time...too tame maybe?
    Feel better Sugarbaby

COCO: TY my friend...there should not be shame...but they had to expect the lash-back...when people make you heroes and you 'fail' them, the people tend to backlash...
So glad B had a good time also...Well if the Steelers were not in the game then he is allowed to root for a 'competitive fun game' which would allow him to root for both teams....LOL

  40. Kb Says:
  41. Way to go Bond Prognosticator! giants pulled it off and it was the best superbowl game I've watched in years.

Do you have any bruschetta left over?

  42. katherine. Says:
  43. there isn't any gentleman jack left is there?

    smile.

  44. KB: Well, maybe not a prognosticator...just a huge fan who loves his team... (though I did call for a Giants by 3 over at Docs - is that what you meant?)
There was some left, but you have to fight Nancy for it...she would not let me take any of it home - LOL ...well if i had asked, maybe

KATHERINE: ALWAYS Gentleman Jack left my friend...ALWAYS... never run out...I have a bottle at both places...LOL

  45. Mia Says:
  46. Lol, Im so not a football fan. But I'll be there for next years party, sounds like great food and good times!!!!

  47. Bud Fisher Says:
  48. THis is a great example of a post that makes The Couch comfortable. You captured both a day's activity and the sports angle, and then a chat with Dad. IT had everything, even chicken wings.

I grew up a Giants fan, but became a Pats fan going to college in Boston. Nothing could shake the Yankees for me though. Itt seemed over the years that only one of the teams was any good, until this year. There was no conflict, I've now been a Pats fan for a long time. Also no solice that the other team I root for won. But I am happy for you and your dad and even Mike Francesa...

  49. Unknown Says:
  50. So, I'm confused...are you HAPPY that the Giants won or not? Take your time. You don't have to answer right away.

  51. Beth Says:
  52. Yeah, yeah, NY Giants. You'd think me being a Yankee fan, I'd also be a Giants fan. NOT. Although not a Pattiots fan either. Should have been Green Bay! Can you say Cheese Head! Food sounded great!

  53. MIRANDA: Come on down...

BUD: TY Sir..I appreciate the love...You know you can come back to the light and become a Giants fan again

DANA: Let me think about it and I will get back to you....

SCHMOOP: SO you like cheese...no problem... LOL

  54. Kb Says:
  55. Yes, that is what I meant -- I like using a $.50 word when I can. :)

  56. The Ferryman Says:
  57. Huh? What game?

The video will be up tomorrow :)

  58. Meribah Says:
  59. I'm not a sports fan so, obviously, I didn't watch the Super Bowl, but I liked your recap of it. You actually made it sound interesting to me...and that is no small feat! LOL :P

I watched Chicken Little instead! :D

  60. Julie Says:
  61. Good job my friend! I attended our party for the food and the good company!

  62. FAB: uh huh....looking forward to seeing it...

MERIBAH: Well, at least you can not talk to all your friends about the game....and funny, but the sky did fall for the Pats....

JULIE: TY dear...and most Super Bowl parties are about that as much if not more than the game

  63. Sparky Duck Says:
  64. 1.Bellichek and Coughlin hugged, this whole sportsmanship thing getting blown way out of proportion.

2.Eli had a brilliant second half and how many people heard of David Tyree before last night.

    3.Great win for NY.

  65. SPARKY: My complaint was Bellichek leaving the field before the game was over...that was the wrong thing to do to HIS team...sure the refs should have just ended the game, but they did not ...

  66. Mimi Lenox Says:
  67. Great discussion here. And all this talk about food is making me hungry. Going to cook.

    Maybe not.
