American Idol - 4 And The Gibb

Sparks Of Insanity By Vinny "Bond" Marini Wednesday, May 09, 2007

Down to four
Way back when, we predicted four females would be left.
Well, 3 females and Blake left...

We are to the point where they get to sing two songs apiece.
Barry Gibb is the mentor
The most successful singer/songwriter of all time???
They said it, we didn't

MELINDA DOOLITTLE: Love You Inside and Out - She certainly made the song her own. Working the stage more and more each week.
Her best performance? No...
A true professional performance? Yes...

BLAKE LEWIS: You Should be Dancing - His CD is skipping. OH no, that is the beat-box again. We may be wrong, but do not remember any other singers getting the reverb treatment before. Sorry to all his fans, but we hated it. The beat box was out of place, his falsetto was shaky, the outfit a wreck.

LaKISHA JONES: Staying Alive - So she decided not to go high with the chorus. Probably a good thing. She took the song and did make it fit her vocal range but the tempo was rocky. That said, it was kind of boring overall.

JORDIN SPARKS: To Love Somebody - The girl is back and better than she was last week. Enjoyed her version of this song. Hit a great high note. Nicely done. Leading the pack so far tonight.

SECOND SONGS:

MELINDA: How Can You Mend A Broken Heart - OK, we got a chill factor here. Made it very bluesy. Liked the arrangement. And then POW the big note and another chill. That was not a backing vocal. Excellent.

BLAKE: This Is Where I Came In - Don't know the song, so can listen to it without judging it against the original. Vocals were rough when he went for the high notes. Now know why it was not a hit. The song is nothing, it does not have a real tune to it. Not a good song choice at all. That could have hurt him moving forward. A real rough performance. (Right Randy...he is trying too hard to beat box on every song.)

LaKISHA: Run To Me - We are reminded of the LaKisha we saw early on in the season in the beginning. Then she she began to scream the lyrics again. She does not have control of her vocals when she trys to go powerful. Her overpowering the big not caused her voice to crack and the last note was horrid. She might have just saved Blake from extinction.

JORDIN: Woman In Love - She put herself in the semi-finals tonight. One excellent performance and one that was good, but not great. Overall, she was the best of the evening. Vocal was rocky on this one. Barbra is a tough one to sing.

BOTTOM TWO:
Blake
LaKisha

GOING HOME:
LaKisha

  1. Travis Cody Says:
  2. Dang. I was sweating through the Dancing results and missed the Radio Happy Hour. Rats.

I agree with your assessments and I think it's LaKisha out. But Blake hurt himself with two really bad performances.

  3. Julie Says:
  4. I think you're pretty much on with my thoughts this week. Overall the show was quite boring..except for Jordin. I'm looking forward to tonight.

    Thanks for sharing Vinny.

  5. Piacere Says:
  6. Guido and I are at odds on who's gonna win...I say Jordin; he says Melinda. Frankly, I wouldn't mind if either won it. Blake and his beat box??? I just don't get it...I'm SOOOO out of touch with that genre. And you're right - LaKisha is a bonified screamer, and it always seems to hurt her performance. As Crazy Paula says, "Spot on", Mr. B...I'm with you.

    SMOOCH!!

  7. Twyla Says:
  8. Last night was agonizing for me to watch...mostly because I hated all the songs that they picked. But no one was really 'great' last night...and they should be blowing us away considering they're in the home stretch. I think you're right about LaKisha going home.

  9. Schmoop Says:
  10. Dear God, when will this all be over!?

  11. I thinking that Blake goes home this week... I'm sick to death of the beat boxing junk... however, I'm afraid it will be LaKisah..

But, it the last two standing will be Melinda and Jordin. I've said that from the very beginning.

  12. Angell Says:
  13. Gotta agree with your assesments of last night. As much as I adore Blake it was NOT his night. I tired of the beat boxing during the first one. During the second - defiantely not necessary.

Missed the radio hour again as things are slipping through my brain at an alarming rate....

Me thinks Melinda will be standing tall at the end, although Jordin is hot right now...

    SHRG

  14. I missed Idol cause I have to watch the remaining Gilmore Girls. Doesn't sounds like I missed much :P

  15. Mags Says:
  16. I didn't have school yesterday so I actually watched it just so I would know what you were talking about today! LOL.

Jordin-holy cow. Not only is she stunning and fresh faced and her eyes sparkle, that girl can SING. Her voice is so pure and clear.

    I hope she wins.

  17. Anndi Says:
  18. Melinda was the overall best performer.. she always is. Strong, consistent, nothing negative to say about her really.. it's unfortunate that people now seem to have gotten accustomed to how strong a singer she is. Felt the chills myself.. no other contestant this year has managed to do that quite as often as she has (which is every week).

Blake did not perform as he could have given the theme.

I think Barry knows HIS songs best...If he says beatbox goes with the first song then it does. I don't think anyone is in any position to contradict him.. do you?

I would have LOVED to have heard him sing 'Jive Talkin'... had he sung 'How Deep is Your love', you would find me still in a pile of goo on the family room floor... or between the cushions of the couch.

LaKisha... she's a screamer alright. And boring (what was she wearing??? Tha green stripe down her dress.. how unfortunate!.. oh.. and that comment goes for Jordin too.. first a maternity frock and then that pageant dress.. *shivers*)

Jordin.. technically she sang 'To Love Somebody' well... Unfortunately I can't take a 17 year old seriously singing those lyrics. And if a vocalist can't make you feel the song, the performance can't be qualified as outstanding.

Yes, singing Babs IS hard.. which is why she shouldn't have attempted it if she couldn't deliver.. and she didn't. It was pitchy, and choppy, and I have the same complaint as I had with 'To Love Somebody'.. didn't feel it.

If you want to hear a great version of 'To Love Somebody' please listen to Janis Joplin or Nina Simone... versions with feeling.. sung by women who have FELT the lyrics...

I think she needs a couple of years to mature.. or for Pete's sake pick age appropriate songs..

The Chicklet says: 'Mommy, I think LaKisha is going home, she was boring.'

I not only listen I call in, FROM CANADA .. LONG DISTANCE... although I may reconsider that... Doc doesn't deserve me...

  19. Sparky Duck Says:
  20. Im picking Blake to do tonight, but I am also not taking his cuteness factor into account

  21. TRAV: Remember it is stored right there on my sidebar for listening whenever

    JULIE: No excitement at all....

PIA: Either could, but I think Melinda will...SMOOCH back

TWYLA: not sure anyone but Melinda (and small possibility of Jordin) that would even be in the top 4 the last two seasons

    DIXIE: Agreed...

    STARRLIGHT: You and the Gilmores..heheheh

MAGS: She can sing... not sure she can win

ANNDI: Once again, your assessment of the show is well thought out. I would think that the stylists have a lot to do with their outfits now, so not sure i blame her totally...Blake's outfit on song one was pretty outrageous..
You thought she was worse then I on song two. Chicklet and I agree...
I just think Doc was frustrated and you hit him kinda hard ya did...but if you are going to host, you need to be ready to take some shots...

SPARKY: Glad to hear the cuteness factor does not effect you..HEY BETTER LATE THEN NEVER, YOU ARE NOW LINKED HERE

  22. Anndi Says:
  23. Blame the stylists huh?

Maybe she needs a music stylist too... help her pick her songs?

What bothers me is that the reproaches that have been made to other contestants never seem to be made to the little young thing... interesting...

How come there's no tunage on the blog?

  24. ANNDI: I said some blame.. not total blame....Blanked on the tunage... sheesh ..what was I tired....???

  25. Mimi Lenox Says:
  26. Jordin's "Woman In Love" was in the wrong key. I felt sorry for her during that performance. Just a little effort with the arrangement would have made it so much better.

    Great review, Bond.

  27. MIMI: Interesting...thank you for that take on it. Not sure she can pull it off over the next two weeks. Melinda is far and away the best of the rest.

  28. BeckEye Says:
  29. I was so disappointed in Blake. I knew he'd get all of Chris's old votes though. I was kinda hoping it would be 3 ladies at the end, but I knew it wouldn't happen.

  30. BECKEYE: Of course he is getting the female vote.. without cause as far as I am concerned.
