This was a quick search last night. It only includes the North American continent. We did the math for you, 95 people killed and 133 wounded in just these incidents which occurred on school grounds.
We did not include the assailants in those numbers if they were also killed or wounded in the incidents.
We were going to list names of those killed, but it is very difficult to find those names.
Unfortunately, we could have listed the names of just about every murderer, but we would not give them the time it would take to type their names.
It would have been easy to find many more incidents. These were just the tip of the iceberg as they say.
WTF is going on? 22 of the criminals were under 16 when they decided to destroy the lives of the families they attacked.
Mothers, fathers, sister, brothers, aunt, uncles, cousins, grandparents, sons, daughters and wives all must live the rest of their lives without their loved ones.
As our friend Anndi pointed out, in addition, please remember the emergency responders who had to deal with these tragedies and, in many cases, are also scared for life.
We saw an interview with the sheriff from the incident in Nickel Mines, PA, who described how he would never forget the scene; the young girls who were killed on the floor below a sign with a "smiley face" poster that said "Welcome."
Stop today and say a small prayer for those who have suffered yesterday at Virginia Tech.

Something must be done about the gun laws in our country.

First responders and medical staff do their job, but all too often are forgotten once the grieving process begins.
My thoughts are with them and their families as well in the aftermath of such tragedies.
I send courage to those who are reliving previous tragedies everytime such a tragic event occurs.
May we all feel concerned and grieve for the tremendous loss.
shocking news - I feel for the families.. and the other students and teachers... terrible.
I think something also needs to be done about the lack of respect for others we seem to be teaching our children...
I would agree that we seem to be teaching our children lack of respect: for others, for authority, for self. It pains me to think that my children are so sensitive to the needs of others that they might be taken advantage of, but I am such a strong believer in teaching love and mutual respect so that kindness can be "infectious."
(I'm paraphrasing here) "The streets of heaven are lined with too many angels tonight."
I have a Peace Candle posted. May the grace and peace of gods love be with everyone.
It's so horrible. And it's a tragedy that students have to be afraid for their lives, when they go to school. It should be one of the safest places for them. You just never know what some crazed lunatic is going to do.
As always, well done Bond. Well done.

Columbine? Was it '99 or 2000? Geez, & I live here.
What an unbelievable tragedy. I felt so awful for the sherrif when a reporter told him that he looked unaffected. To me, he looked like he had been exhausted and horrified and just couldn't take much more after what he had been dealing with.
I'm angry with the pro-gun citizens who are claiming that this wouldn't have happened if the students were allowed to carry concealed weapons.
Something has got to change in our country.
Thank you, V...this is much appreciated.
Hugs,
Pia
I am thoroughly disgusted with the state of the world today. And then some people wonder why I am so reluctant to bring a child into this world.
Thank you for the reminder Bond (and to Ann as well).
What is this world coming to?
Columbine was 1999... I remember it oh so well.
It was 99 Tug. The 8 year anniversary is this Friday.
I totally agree with you on the gun laws. While I do think we *should* have the right to own then, I am beginning to think that as a country we are somehow not responsible enough.
It´s so tragic. I´ll keep all of them in my thoughts and prayers.
This is such a horrible tragedy.
Your statement about not finding the victims' names but that the assailants names were readily available is all too true. Disgusting, really. There was a Verve Pipe song called "Villains" that put it well - "Another villain on the cover of every major magazine/The victim's somewhere in between."
You mention, "Something must be done about the gun laws in our country."
I agree. Almost all of the locations where these murders took place were "gun-free" zones, in other words, areas where the victims had been disarmed by gun-control laws and rules.
Murderers do NOT obey laws. How many of these lost lives might have been saved if the teachers had been armed and trained?
When will we wise up and stop providing disarmed victims for criminals and mad killers?
But when will we DO something?
Whether it's creating stronger gun control laws or teaching our children respect and decency or behaving with kindness ourselves, when will we as a society actually DO it?
I get tired of the idea of a "dialog". Let's quit wringing our hands and DO something.
I am only responding to two comments today.. the rest of your comments stand on their own
ROCKY: That is CRAP.. yes something must be done, but not arming everyone... your views are despicable in my mind. So, every teacher gets a a gun and can shoot away? That is your solution? Sorry... but that does not fly. And I disagree that these are gun-free zones. Most of these places are where people own and can buy guns without much oversight at all.
TRAVIS: Our congress has had the opportunity with the Brady gun Law and watered it down to nothing. We need to start looking at their records on gun control and fighting against the NRA's strong lobby..
My father is a teacher. He believes that discipline starts at home. He asks, "How can I teach the kids if I have to discipline them?" So much of the focus is taken off of teaching and just on keeping the kids in line.
Also, there was a shooting in Blackville, SC, sometime when I was pregnant with Bethany so it would have been in 1995. I remember it because he killed one female teacher and wounded a male, and the male had been a teacher I had had.
I bowed my head to keep the tears from flowing as I read this post, Vinny. As an educator, I feel an incredibly deep sorrow over these events. I work with at-risk teens such as those who committed these heinous crimes. I have had crisis training, "just in case". First thing every morning, I enter a classroom populated by 26 grade ten students. I refuse to teach in an environment that is governed by fear or intimidation. There have been "situations" in the past, but they are neither an influence on my teaching style nor on my expectations of my students. Nevertheless, it is a fact that every day, there is the possibility of unpleasantness. Despite our most strenuous efforts, incidents of bullying and harrassment are on the rise in our schools and communities. It all adds up to an explosive environment. You know my views on gun laws, Vinny. We have had that discussion. Guns are a part of the problem, not the solution. Schools are supposed to be a safe place for our children. Adding more security and weaponry will not solve the problem that faces us. The home, the community and the schools are equally impacted by this tragic situation. It is not an insular problem any more. Everyone has to get involved. There is no room for apathy.
Sorry, you know it's my own personal soapbox, and I bet you're surprised that I didn't comment sooner or longer ...
