"SILVER SCREEN"

WELCOME TO THURSDAY THIRTEEN

This week we have selected the theme of "kick back - little thought" movies
(titles are links to more info)

Silver Screen

#1 - Mr. Sardonicus - This is a 60's William Castle classic. This is the first movie to scare the crap outta THE COUCH. After seeing this movie, THE COUCH would open our eyes in the middle of the night because of a hand on my chest and Dr. Sardonicus is standing over me and my mouth opens and nothing comes out. We found it on late one night on a station when we lived in Massachusetts. Set the VCR... Sat down to watch.. saw first half and VCR had shut off. arggggggg - you can also read about it HERE.

#2 - Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein - I had to be in the hospital a couple of days because of something with my throat... mom?? little help here...Anyway this movie was playiing on THE MILLION DOLLAR MOVIE (a big show in the NY market in the 60's)... and It was on like 4 times a day...and it was the only TV I could see from my bed... It kept me company and anyway I LOVED Abbott and Costello and this one also featured the Wolfman and Dracula!
You can read more about it HERE

Bull Durham - Just a good baseball movie...well a love story written around baseball, but baseball takes the lead. Costner is great in his roll and this has the best monologue in any baseball movie ever...yea you know it...wait, here it comes...
"Well, I believe in the soul, the c**k, the pu**y (hey my mom reads this), the small of a woman's back, the hanging curve ball, high fiber, good scotch, that the novels of Susan Sontag are self-indulgent, overrated crap. I believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing Astroturf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days."

#4 - Eight Men Out - A fairly accurate look at the Chicago Black Sox, the team that threw the 1919 World Series. John Cusak is excellent in his role of George "Buck" Weaver, the third basemen who neve took any money or wanted it and had a great series, but met the fate of the others...a life time ban from baseball. Of course, included in that group was the legendary Shoeless Joe Jackson.

#5 - Lethal Weapon - Cool buddy flick, this is one I can pick up anywhere in the movie and just start watching. Like it more then the followups....Crazy cop and older partner...but these two make it funny.

#6 - Babes In Toyland - Laurel & Hardy and a whole lotta wooden men who come alive to save the day. Memories of my childhood.

#7 - A Christmas Story - Jean Shepard's tale of Ralphie and his pursuit of the Red Ryder B.B. Gun. Shepard came to RIT and told tales from the stage for like 2+ hours and this was part of the evening. They captured his vision.

#8 - Die Hard - Again the original is the best but the other is just as good. Action, adventure, good kick back and giggle flick.

#9 - Animal House - You knew it was here...THE FUNNIEST COMEDY MADE.

#10 - Caddy Shack - The Second Funniest Movie made... Bill Murray at his best!

#11 - Stripes - Murray at his second best, though the second reel of the film was much weaker then the first...

#12 - Hunt For Red October - I think the best Tom Clancy adaptation. Alec Baldwin in his only take of Jack Ryan, then he walked away. Sean Connery - the Russian with the Scottish accent is my one complaint. They did a good job of giving you some of the sub details Clancy prides himself on.

#13 - Field Of Dreams - OK - this movie is one that I have to watch alone... so no one can prove those were not allergies..LOL - Costner is fantabulous and James Earl Jones adds grace.

Thanks for sitting on THE COUCH, hope you enjoyed your stay.

Remember .. Nets For Malaria - UNFoundation.org/malaria - find the big SI's Nothing But Net logo ... Or call 202.887.9040. Every cent goes to buying nets to place over the beds of children in Africa to stomp out Malaria. PLEASE HELP.

Keep that spark of insanity kids...It helps keep you an individual.

48 Of Your Sparks

  1. I have to say that Bill Murray is one of my favorite actors. I first saw him in Ghostbusters as a child, and fell in love with him. He's a versatile actor and I am happy you have 2 movies by him.

Loved all of the movies on your list! And I think we should have a Toga part in commeration of Animal House.

  2. Barb Says:
  3. #8, #7, #8, #10, #11 (That's the fact, JACK!), #12, #13 :)

  4. Breadcrumbs again, Bond Baby -- I was here.

  5. TopChamp Says:
  6. I'd forgotten it was Thursday today! NO!!!!!!!! Now I'm gonna be late for work again.

The days all start to merge into one after you work solidly for two months. Esp if you work weekends.

Hunt for Red October has a brilliant soudtrack - and there's nothing wrong with a Scottish accent... (even if it's on a would-be Russian....?).

  7. tiggerprr Says:
  8. A Christmas Story...it's a classic. This is a great list with some great movie memories for me, as well as some I've never seen. The latter of which, would probably cause you to banish me from your daily read list so I won't tell!

  9. Bubba Says:
  10. Love the list. I even think that we have some movies in common from when I listed my 13 faves.

    Happy TT!

  11. Caylynn Says:
  12. Great list! :) Movies that I enjoy watching include 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12. I hadn't seen 9, 10 or 11 until my husband came along, and he was right - they are funny!

    Have a good day. :)

  14. Man, I could just sack out on the big leather couch today, I am SOOOOO TIRED! Great list of movies. I was very happy to see Stripes up there. ;)

I've posted my Thursday Thirteen, too. Enjoy!

  15. Coco Says:
  16. *Smiles at Bond's list*
Some good movies there, and some GREAT ones. Glad to see you included a chick flick for the sensitive side: I agree 100% about Bull Durham. But you forgot Sense and Sensibility!

  17. Anonymous Says:
  18. You'll put your eye out! You'll put your eye out!!! (always one of my favs)

I don't know #1 - me no likey the skeery stuff! I'll ask Guido if he's seen it - he's a skeery movie connoisseur from WAY back...

    Hugs,
    Pia

  19. Twyla Says:
  20. There are a lot of those movies that I have not seen, but we all know #7 is my one of my favourite movies of all time. :-)
We all watched it last Saturday night while having a few...and that made it extra funny.
    Great TT.

  21. Liz Hill Says:
  22. Great list-- you know how WE love Bull Durham Caddyshack and Animal House--yup

  23. Lizza Says:
  24. Loved that Bull Durham monologue (and the love scenes were kinda steamy, too!)

Great list, so many enjoyable movies there.

  25. Anonymous Says:
  26. Dude - there's some terrific films on this list. But I gotta disagree with ya on #12 about Sean Connery. If it weren't for him, then who would Baldwin impersonate when he's in the the missile bay going after the bad guy?!?!?

Fixin to post my 13 shortly and taking a weather day! Woooo for me!!

  27. Verrrrry interesting collection. I would only agree with The Hunt for Red October, although that first movie has me very intrigued! Happpy TT!

  28. Julie Says:
  29. Great list Vinny! I remember Costner's rant in Bull what a scene!

I see horror, action, comedy, suspense and romance...are you really THAT well rounded?

  30. Unknown Says:
  31. I'm sure you can make a list a mile long with that topic. I can think of a few.

AMMY: You NEVER saw Animal House did you??? fess up!

BUBBA: Will have to try and go back and check yours.

COCO: probabyl forgot is since i have never seen it! OH MY

PIA: Wondering if he will know it. Folks it is a great old scary movie... William Castle is the master of those movies...

TWYLA: I agree.. one of the all time favs...

TURN: yes we all know you do love them!

LIZZA: The monologue makes the flick, as does the one Sarandon did just prior, but from a guys standpoint this one says it all!

TRAV: Yes that is funny... I love Connery (he repeats)... I just wish he could have Ruskkied it up a bit more!

JOELY: Would be interested in seeing your "kick back, no brainer" list then... hehehe

JULIE: I guess I am, i really did not think of categories when i did this, and I had to leave some out...

BUSY: Yes we know and it is why we lovve you so! And yes, I had to stop... Risky Business (before he imploded), Blazng Saddles, the original house on the haunted hill - stop ..OK

  35. LOKI: ummm then what is this in front of me????

  36. Oh I love this list. All are GREAT movies. But my most favorite is A Christmas Story... we never fail to watch that... absolutely hilarious....

  37. Oh, I forgot to say... Matt and I were laughing the other day and I told him that he could NOT be like Bill Murray in Stripes when he went to Boot Camp... they would throw him in the brig if he did... LMOO ... his response to me was "That's a fact Jack"...

  38. tiggerprr Says:
  39. Hiya...Ammy/tiggerprr here. Pfft, of course I've seen Animal House! ::stuffs mashed potatoes in her mouth and smacks both of her cheeks at once:: "I'm a zit, get it?"

It's about as bad though, and that's all I am sayin. :P

  40. Anndi Says:

    Double dog dares!!

    LOVE it!

ah yes...long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days...
wait.. what was I talking about?

If only that movie took place in a clearing by the ocean with candlelight candlelight.. it would be perfect... cause well.. baseball.. Nope.. but HOCKEY!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Speaking of which.. 'Slapshot' and the Hanson Brothers.. a classic movie Vince.. really!

  42. DIX: Christmes story is the best and i love the "Thats a fact Jack" and "Hey, we are the United States Army, we are 3 and 1" So many people miss that slap!

  47. Great list!! I absolutely LOVE A Christmas Story. And now I want to do nothing but watch those movies all day...LOL!

  48. Oh what about "Slingblade" with Billy Bob Thorton... Matt does a wonderful impersonation....

  49. yes and I spelled Hockey wrong too.... HOCKEY RINK

  50. Anonymous Says:
  51. I love sports movies...but I can't stand Kevin Costner. Can't watch any of the ones he's in. James Earl Jones saves that one movie I won't watch.

    Happy TT!

  52. Mags Says:
  53. I know this should be about your list, but it's not...

If keeping the insanity alive means I am an individual...well, then I'm a success!!!

    ;)

  54. HEATHER: It seems many people do love that movie...hehehe... wish i could do that!

DIXIE: you know, i have never watched that all the way through

N.MALLORY: Is it something he do to yu personally? Funny how that can be.. my dad hates renee russo, but can not explain why!

MAGS: Yes it does.. it is from an old Robin Williams routine, where a grandfather tells his grandson"If you keep that spark of insanity, they can never take your individuality away." it just sorta stuck with me.

  55. Tink Says:
  56. I love 5, 8 and 12, but I'll certainly check out some of the others too.
    Thanks for visiting my Sinterklaas-TT!

    Sonny

  59. Tug Says:
  60. You've got some GREAT ONES on here!! 'Tis the season for A Christmas Story again...I love it.

My brother sent me an e-mail once - "I can die now". I e-mailed back "OK. Why?" His reply - "I just shook Bill Murray's hand".

  61. Meribah Says:
  62. Oooo, A Christmas Story! Now, that's a movie you can watch every year without getting tired of it. Classic!
I also like Hunt For Red October.

  63. BeckEye Says:
  64. As far as baseball movies go, "Eight Men Out" is the best, followed closely by "Field of Dreams." I thought "Bull Durham" was funny, but I never saw what the huge deal about it was. Give me "Major League" instead any day. :)

  65. Anonymous Says:
  66. Ooh, I love Die Hard #2, Field of Dreams, and Bull Durham. Great list!

  67. Bud Fisher Says:
  68. Terrific list! I wouldn't have the same 13, but I love all the films you selected. Way-to-go, Bond!

  69. TINK: Thanks.. good choices..

SWEET KITTY- Glad you liked them.. I had fun putting them together.

    TUG: LOL for your brother!

MERI: Seems to be the clear winner off my list...

BECKEYE: I had Major League out there too... Stopping at 13 was tough!

JENNY: Thanks for sitting on THE COUCH Good choices also...

BUD: Like to see you kick back - no brainer movie list!

  70. AtriaBooks Says:
  71. Awesome call on Bull Durham and Field of Dreams, Meat :)

  72. Ditto the vote on Major League. How can anyone NOT love Wild Thing? Too bad the actual stadium used in the movie was in PA and not Cleveland, OH.

Some flix I watch repeatedly: Pirates of the Caribbean, Apollo 13 (the ending chokes me up every time, and we all KNOW how it turned out!), and Bend it Like Beckham (cracks me up every time).

  73. Okay so you have "allergies" when you watch a some movies?????

Well, I have them pretty often too... but then I'm pretty emotional and good movies always get to me... It gets really bad, so I kind of avoid any kind of sad ending.... too much of it in the real world as it is

  74. Amanda Says:
  75. Nice list you have here bond. I'm happy to say I in my young age (ahem) have seen most of them! Loooooooove Bull Durahm :)

  76. DR>B: he called me MEAT~! wowo...

SONGBIRD: Yes, it was really close to making it .. couold have been there
Apollo 13 is way cool and yes you forget you know the ending sometimes

    WENDY: LOL to allergies

AMANDA: lol young enough.. lol ummmmmmmmmmm

  77. Anonymous Says:
  78. I haven't seen a lot of those. :( Guess I'd better update my Netflix.

And yes, I am out of town for work...

  79. Unknown Says:
  80. A Christmas Story has to be one of the funniest movies ever made.

    You'll shoot your eye out!
