What a Wonderful Day...

Sparks Of Insanity By Vinny "Bond" Marini Wednesday, September 08, 2010 13 Of Your Sparks

So, this past Saturday and Sunday was the Center For Southern Folklore's Memphis Blues and heritage Festival here in Memphis, TN.

On Sunday, to celebrate our 1st Anniversary, Nancy and I headed downtown around 2pm. Main Street is always closed off to traffic and is the main run for the Trolley that services downtown Memphis.

There were booths with local artists and a stage that gave cooking demonstrations of different foods all day. There were also four stages for music. Two were indoors and two outdoors. The main stage is where we did spend most of the day. Though we did take some time to sit at THE MAJESTIC GRILL, which was right across for the main music stage. They had a sale on their Mojitos and at $4 each, we indulged in a few. Beers from the vendors on the street were only $3 each ($4 for Heineken), so we also had a few of those during the day.

I posted many more of these on Facebook, but wanted to share some sights of the day.

The Agitators play inside
They put on a nice set of rock/blues

The Jazz Collective
Some great music from this group

The Daddy Mack Blues Band
William Faulkner - Harold Bonner - James Bonner

Daddy Mack

John Paul Keith & The 145s
John Argroves - Mark E. Stuart - John Paul Keith
Playing as a trio on this day.
Real good rock-country sounds

Sonny Burgess & The Legendary Pacers
Fred Douglas - Bobby Crawford & Kern K. Kennedy - Jim Aldridge

Mr. Sonny Burgess

Sonny Burgess and the Legendary Pacers were one of the original artists at Sun Records. 50 years of playing rock and Rockabilly...they can play like they are still teens.

From their bio: The band was formed in 1955 at Newport, Arkansas. They had five singles on SUN Records: "Red Headed Woman" b/ "We Wanna Boogie", "Thunderbird", "Ain't Got a Thing", "Buckets Got a Hole In It", and "Sadies Back In Town". They also had a hit in 1965 on Razorback Records with "The Short Squashed Texan". "Red Headed Woman and We Wanna Boogie" has been voted the wildest record ever recorded. Sonny and the Pacers played clubs, festivals, shows, and colleges all over the US and Canada. They were one of the pioneers of rock and roll and traveled with Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley, Danny and the Juniors, Conway Twitty, Patsy Cline, Ronnie Hawkins, Billy Lee Riley, Ace Cannon, Charlie Rich, Teddy Riedell, Narvel Felts, and many more.

The Brown Sisters
This Gospel Music act had the crowd up dancing and singing.
They even took time to let all the kids in the audience take a turn
and some of the kids had incredible voices.
A uplifting fun set

While Sonny was playing I looked over to my left and saw a familiar face
It was Ms. Reba Russell checking out the tunes.
I walked over and introduced myself, as we had never met in person.
As she said "I know all these guys, they are my friends".

This is the Reba Russell Band:

Doug Minn - what a drummer this guy is!

Robert Nighthawk Tooms - Keyboards and Harp

Josh Roberts - Guitar Player Extraordinaire

Wayne Russell - Plays an incredible Bass (also married to Ms. Reba)

I believe these shots show the power and intensity of Reba during a performance.
Her vocal abilities are even more dynamic in person.

I liked this shot of Wayne and Reba

Now that is a smile to make my heart go pitter-patter

Hope you enjoyed...We had a wonderful time!

There was a butterfly...really...

Sparks Of Insanity By Vinny "Bond" Marini Monday, August 02, 2010 13 Of Your Sparks

It noticed it early in the week, right out the door to the deck...

It was sitting right there...flapping its wings slowly. Was it hurt? I could not tell. I went out and it flew away

It was this past Friday. I was home taking care of some important items on my list (mainly clean the house...with Nancy gone, it was my responsibility...) and I look out the door and there is the butterfly in the same spot, just outside the door.

My camera was right there, with the normal 55mm lens. Not my choice, but I wanted to get a few shots before it flew away...

Slowly, I open the door and very gently kneel down and click away

click...click...click...

Go to look at how they are turning out and see the notation on the menu screen...
AAARRRGGG...I had taken the SD card out to transfer pictures to the computer and forgot to put it back in...

So, inside I go...get the SD card...put on the telephoto lens, because heck-a-doodle, I might get an even better shot.

I go outside and the butterfly is gone. I decide to take some photos of the items on the porch, adjusting the settings in the bright sun.

I head inside for a while to finish up some chores.

A little while later I look out the door and my friend is back.

I slowly move outside again and I kneel down gently and click away. The butterfly poses for me and flaps its wings slowly showing me the blue color on top and the orange color on the bottom.

click...click...click...

With the zoom lens I am getting up close and personal...

click...click...click...

Finally the butterfly gets tired of this and flys away. I move inside to look at the pictures I took...

AAARRGGGGGGGGGG...I never checked the settings and now, as I was shooting in a shadow my settings were not correct and there is nothing there...well, almost nothing...look real close, there is a butterfly there...

Really, the butterfly was real...it was there...I took its picture, can't you see it????....

(and yes, it looked very similar to the one up top...)

Tonight joining me on The Couch will be Michael Sokolowski from the band Sokoband. Michael had real life intrude the last time he was scheduled, but we welcome him back.
Sokoband is redefining itself with the recent re-release of the 1997 debut album, In November Sunlight. The CD contains 10 tracks, eight of which are new versions of the songs from the debut and the other two are previously unreleased.

Then we will welcome Shelley & Cal James to The Couch. Married in life as well as music, these two performers have found a sound that caught my ear quickly.

They create music meant for the ear, but also the spirit and soul.

I hope you can join us, this evening, 9:00pm central time at Music On The Couch, or listen anytime from the archives also found there.

The fans got the show up to #13 this past week...I thank you!

Look who I met....

Sparks Of Insanity By Vinny "Bond" Marini Tuesday, March 23, 2010 10 Of Your Sparks

So last week while in Chicago on business I got to meet two people whom I had wanted to meet for a while. Both blog, but not regularly...they do have a TWO BlogTalk Radio show which is one of the top rated show on the network and the male portion of this dynamic duo also helps with the Radio Happy Hour.

Of course I am talking about the infamous, funny, delightful ANNIE & BURL!!!!

They brought along the funny, sweet Kimmehkins who took these pictures and there were also some of her, but she refuses to share...pout pout

We met at my hotel and then headed over to The Cheesecake Factory across the street where we laughed for the next two hours. There were people sitting on both sides of us and I can guarantee that they went home that night and discussed those "four insanely weird people" they were seated next to.

The subject ranged from Blogtalk radio to the drunk show to whether Kim and Annie would get crazy on each other in the restaurant to whether Burl and I would get crazy on each other in the restaurant. No, there was no hot sex in the restaurant...but maybe there was some outside the restaurant! But I will never tell, because what happens in The Cheesecake Factory (or it's parking lot) stays in The Cheesecake Factory.

BUT --- there are pictures!

Our first meeting at the hotel

We are all friends...grab away

That is Annie's hand reaching for my ah... (she was three feet away)

One last picture on the bench

Friends for life...

The Hollywood Reporter is calling it “bursting with heart” and Filmmaker Magazine said the film is “full of performances that are rough around the edges but as authentic and appealing as any I’ve seen at the festival (Sundance) thus far.”

Bilal’s Stand, the movie that just played Sundance Film Festival, Pan African Film Festival and Berlin Film Festival is based on Sultan’s journey and tells the story of Bilal, a Muslim Black Detroit high school student and his struggle to pursue his dream of higher education over continuing the family taxi stand business.
