Monday Memories & Meme...

Sparks Of Insanity By Vinny "Bond" Marini Monday, April 28, 2008 47 Of Your Sparks

Hoping your weekend was full of new pleasant memories...still no ability to upload new music, so we are into the "repeats" season here on The Couch. We are looking into another option, suggested by our friend LeeLee...this option will cost money though and I am thinking I want to wait until we publish the new format and site home.

I spent some time on the ballfields watching my friends play, but the weather canceled other games. Great news, Lewisburg High School has moved on to the next round in the State Championship. This is a huge accomplishment for a new school with a team that includes some Juniors and mostly Sophomores. There is not one Senior on the team. Hoping they continue their run this weekend.

So, I received this note from Mom Joan and Dad Vince this weekend in the mail:

How sweet of them. So I debated whether to post these or not, knowing full well the slew of reactions which you, our most wonderful guests, will fill our comments box.

But...what the hell...

So, you all know how much I love baseball...this love has been life-long...

And there is no doubt I love music...I would dream of taking the stage to the bellowing love of thousands of fans...I even had a unique concept for outfits for the band...now maybe it was a little ahead of it's time...
And anyone who knows me knows full-well that if there is a party, I am ready to get jiggy wit' it any time...always ready to roll to a celebration...

Our most exellent friend, Travis, came up with a meme...and I wanted to play. I asked if I could mix categories and was told I had his permission.

Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to:

1. Choose a category from one of these: Television, Stage & Screen, Nightly News, Publishing, Lives & Times, Music

2. Find 8 bits of trivia about your selected category

3. Be sure to let me know when...ok, if...you decide to play along so I can see what you come up with.

4. You may tag, or simply offer the meme for borrowing or stealing as you like.

Let's start with #4...steal away if you like, I don't tag.

And awayyyyyyyyyyyyy we go...
  • The term "Jumped The Shark", means a TV show has gone too far, and it has reached it's peak with it's viewers. The term comes from the "Happy Days" episode when Fonzie took a challenge to jump a live shark while water-skiing. COUCH NOTE: You can find all kinds of "Jump The Shark" info HERE.
  • Casey Kasem, the radio DJ who turned 76 yesterday, was the voice for "Shaggy" on Scooby-Doo (thanks to Dana for the Birthday info)
  • Not to stay on one TV show, but arguably, "Happy Days" has the most spin-offs; Laverne and Shirley (1976–1983), Blansky's Beauties (1977), Mork & Mindy (1978–1983), Fonz and the Happy Days Gang (1980), Joanie Loves Chachi (1982–1983).
  • The Los Angeles Rams were the first U.S. football team to introduce emblems on their helmets.
  • In 1963, baseball pitcher Gaylord Perry remarked, "They'll put a man on the moon before I hit a home run." On July 20, 1969, a few hours after Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon, Gaylord Perry hit his first, and only, home run.
  • The "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" we sing at ballparks is just the chorus. There actually are two verses in which heroine Katie Casey tells her beau that she doesn’t want him to take her to a show.
  • Jimi Hendrix's first major North American jaunt was as opening act for Davy, Micky, Peter and Mike - The Monkees. But did you know that when said tour hit Chicago, and the notorious "Plaster Casters" appeared backstage to, umm, immortalize each bands member(s) in clay, several myths were forever shattered when it turned out Jimi's family jewels failed to measure anywhere near up to those belonging to none other than Peter Tork!
  • The first product to have a bar code was Wrigley's gum.

OK, we know you want to know what the other two verses are..

Nelly Kelly loved baseball games,
Knew the players, knew all their names,
You could see her there ev'ry day,
Shout "Hurray" when they'd play.
Her boy friend by the name of Joe
Said, "To Coney Isle, dear, let's go,"
Then Nelly started to fret and pout,
And to him I heard her shout.

"Take me out to the ball game,
Take me out with the crowd.
Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack,
I don't care if I never get back,
Let me root, root, root for the home team,
If they don't win it's a shame.
For it's one, two, three strikes, you're out,
At the old ball game."

Nelly Kelly was sure some fan,
She would root just like any man,
Told the umpire he was wrong,
All along, good and strong.
When the score was just two to two,
Nelly Kelly knew what to do,
Just to cheer up the boys she knew,
She made the game sing this song.

We will be seeing this gentleman on Friday evening in the Tennessee Lottery Blues Tent...

Mr. Keb' Mo'

ENJOY....

Almost Tuneless Tuesday...

Sparks Of Insanity By Vinny "Bond" Marini Tuesday, April 22, 2008 24 Of Your Sparks

So I had a whole Tuneage Tutelage all set to go. Part of the Delta Blues Series and lifelogger will not accept any of my uploads.

This threw all my plans for tomorrow's (that would be TODAY'S) post out of whack...so we are free-styling here.

I could just throw up some music already uploaded, but you have heard them all. Sure, there are many deserving of a repeat.

But if I just keep typing here, eventually I will have a post. It will probably be complete nonsense, but maybe no one will notice.

Hopefully, the issue will be worked out tomorrow and we can share the post with all y'all.

OK, we can go back to the post from Friday where we talked about concerts and had you, our guests, tell you best and worst concert stories.

I really enjoyed reading your recollections and thank all who took the time...

We selected two experiences to win the CD of music that has been played on The Couch. The first was the poignant story told by Angell of her Styx concert after a tragedy. She wrote:

Well, since becoming a security guard five years ago, I have attended some totally amazing shows, but had to work them, and wasn't actually able to pay attention.

But the best concert ever, for me, was when Styx came to Hamilton about six years ago. I had just lost one of my best friends, Ruth (some may remember her story), and was not in the partying or Styx mood (yah, I know - others fainted in shock). But my other friend Cathie, had never been to a Styx show, and I promised her I would take her. So we got to Hamilton early - it was a GA show. We stood for two hours, at the front of the stage, through the opener and set change, and then the boys came on stage.

At this point I had barely registered anything that was going on, hardly speaking to Cat, just totally miserable, and wondering why God had taken such a wonderful person and left me here. Well, the boys came on stage and started playing. I couldn't get into it. I didn't think it was fair that I was able to be there when Ruth was gone. I felt Cat nudge me during Lorelei (one of their older songs for those that don't know), and when I looked at her, she grabbed both sides of my head and turned it to face the stage.

I looked up and the bassist, Glen Burtnick, was looking down at me, smiling and singing. Didn't matter at all. In fact, I almost started crying. During the guitar solo that Tommy threw in there, he knelt at the edge of the stage and held out his hand to me. I put mine in his, and he mouthed at me, Smile sweetheart. Then he kissed something and pressed it into my hand.

When I opened it, it was one of his guitar picks. I smiled, for the first time in days, and mouthed up to him - I love you. And he mouthed it back.

I enjoyed the rest of the concert, and will forever remember that show as the one that reminded me that there's a lot of life left to live.

The second memory is a tale of woe for a young woman and her boyfriend BFF when they are confronted with unfamiliar stimuli and time restraints...from LeeLee...

Worst? In maybe 73-74. My BFF and I went to Roosevelt stadium in Jersey City to see Rod Stewart. One of our Moms drove us down there and one of our Dads was picking us up at 11pm.

We got there at like 3pm. Found a space on the floor pretty close to the stage..and were pretty psyched. We had no idea that Rod Stewart was the last act...the first was Lynyrd Skynyrd. We were teeny boppers and didn't even know who they were..so they start and the crowd rushes to the front and basically crushed us.

After Skynyrd, Alvin lee and 10 Years after comes on..and the crowd pushes even further..(ashamed to say now I didn't know them either) We were majorly uncomfortable and not too happy. At like 10:30..finally Rod The Mod comes on...and we had to leave..at 11..~sigh~ It was one for the record books. I saw RS a few times after that...but that one will always stick in my mind.

And then we kept coming back to one other flashback (maybe in more ways than one! LOL). This comes to us from Mickey-T, a true tale of a fan making the most of the experience.

The best, Watkins Glen [you know who was there]

THE COUCH NOTE: In case you do not, was The Band, The Allman Brothers & The Grateful Dead. A fantastic show it was!

About a week before the show I was hitching back from Calif. to Boston by myself. [100 thousand miles first 5 years out of school]

It was a warm day and my ride through NY offered me to come to this public pool. I chatted the pretty lifeguard, and she said I could crash with her friends in Geneva. Party house all the way! The next day they invited me to the Can Am Race at the Glen. Paaarrrtttyyy!!!!

My first race and then they told me that next week the concert was going to happen, so stick around. Well the last night of the race it's customary to burn junk cars in this bog of mud. I was in the thick of it, burning ,screaming, mudding. I lost my voice and my wallet that night.

Next day hitched home pennyless, went to the bank and got my 10 dollars [lost traverler check in the mud] Hi mom, by mom. Hitched back to the Glen, got there on a rainy wed night and slept under a bus with about 20 others. So at a dollar a hit for the mind set and 25cent bagles, the next four days were the best time and music outdoors I ever did have!!

So, if the three of you will send me an email and tell me the following:
  • Your snail mail address
  • So you want me to just select at will or do you want to send me a list of artists/songs?
  • OR...are you not interested in the CD? Remember, it will be our secret!

See, now we should play some music from each of the bands listed...and we can throw up some Dead we have used -

ENJOY.....

"Ramble On Rose"

And we can give you some Skynyrd...
"Gimme Three Steps"

Fandom Friday...

Sparks Of Insanity By Vinny "Bond" Marini Friday, April 18, 2008 41 Of Your Sparks

In the comments area from yesterday LeeLee and I went back and forth with a conversation regarding concerts we have seen. She is lucky enough to be going to see Mr. Springsteen this evening. I have seen Bruce twice, both times at his "shrine", The Meadowlands in NJ. Not even sure what they call the arena that is there now. But it is one of those hockey arenas that has very little acoustical soul and can put you 6 1/2 miles from the stage.

THE COUCH NOTE: Dad Vince sent an email this morning informing us that LeeLee will not be seeing Bruce tonight as Danny Federici, the longtime keyboard player for Bruce Springsteen whose stylish work helped define the E Street Band's sound on hits from "Hungry Heart" through "The Rising," died Thursday. He was 58.

Federici, who had battled melanoma for three years, died at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. News of his death was posted late Thursday on Springsteen's official Web site.
Sad news... R.I.P. Danny.

In some aspects, I have thought I would get more satisfaction from sitting at home with my eyes closed and an album blasting from the speakers. Of course that is not a totally serious comment...but there is a thread of truth to it.

Arena rock began in the late 60's, early 70's when bands realized they could do one show for 25,000 people, instead of 5 nights in a small theater for 5,000 each night. Does it make sense? Well hell yeah, from a financial and time standpoint. Does it impact your fan-base? Nah...if someone wants to see you live, it does not matter if they are in the first row of the Beacon Theater in NYC, or a half a mile away at Woodstock or Ozfest.

Part of the concert experience is the crowd and the energy that runs through a building (or outdoor arena) no matter how large the place. Over the last few years, I have not done too many live shows due to fiscal restraints, but as most of you know, I did get to two days of the Beale Street Blues Festival last year and was not surprised that on Friday, I made sure I got there early enough and moved as close to the stage as possible.

No seating...I knew it was going to be about 5-6 hours of standing and that slowly the 'personal space' I currently had would disappear entirely. Did not matter. 20 feet from The Allman Brothers and Govt. Mule and Jerry Lee Lewis and Derek Trucks was worth every elbow in the kidney or toe stepped on.

If you have not been around long, we posted this on our story about the weekend HERE :

Also last year we went to Birmingham, AL and met up with a whole group of crazy muthaf**kers wonderful people for Taylor Hicks' concert in his hometown. It was at the Alabama Theater, a wonderfully built, acoustically orgasmic building. My seat was in the 4th or 5th row of the loge. So it equated to being in the 15-20th row of the Orchestra, without all the heads in front of you.

COUCH NOTE: If ya have not guessed, we are not the tallest tree in the forest.

It was a fantastic show - the man is a showman and until you see him live, you can not really judge. Did it help that it was in a theater like that? Absolutely and, without a doubt this is the way I would prefer to see a show.

I do miss the Palladium in NYC. What a great venue that was. They would sometimes hold two shows a night there (as they did with the Fillmore East and West). Going to the second show, which would start at about 1:00 am, and walking out as the sun comes up after 5 hours of a Dead show is something that has to be experienced. Not sure they would even attempt that in today's world.

We have been to outdoor fests (Allman Brothers, The Band & The Dead), football arenas (Bruce, The Rolling Stones, The Dead to name a few), indoor arenas (Led Zeppelin, The Dead, Pink Floyd, Elton John - with a surprise visit from John Lennon, Allman Brothers, Jethro Tull, Springsteen, Jeff Beck, Genesis...you get the idea...) but nothing beats the intimate theater or club (Hot Tuna, Jeff Beck, Jerry Garcia, Stevie Wonder, Linda Ronstadt). Seeing B.B. King in a 500 person club on Long Island in the 80's is something I will never forget.

We keep adding names above and are leaving out many others.

And - OF COURSE - let's not forget the ticket prices...LOL...$200.00 tickets today. We put together some show here...sure look at the artists, but look at the prices!

As Always...Click To Enlarge
COUCH NOTE: In the center is game 6 World Series - Yankees/Dodgers
Reggie Jackson hits three home runs on the first pitch of three consecutive at bats.
Sorry Travis!

So...let's start a little discussion...

What was THE BEST concert you have ever seen, what was the venue and why was it the best?

What was THE WORST concert you have ever seen, what was the venue and why was it the worst?

I was asked the other day if I would consider putting together a CD of music that has been featured here on The Couch. This person even offered to pay for it! LOL...Not sure we will do that, but how about if we do a CD for the BEST and the WORST story? You will have the choice of a random sampling or you can ask for specific songs. If you are the winner and could not be bothered with the CD, well we can make that our little secret, just let me know. LOL

Let's play fair here and no making stuff up...you are on the honor system on this.

So, of course we go all live...a selection from my collection of bootleg concerts to share with all ya'll

Here we go again...it is midnight...blogger will not let me publish...lifelogger has slowed to a crawl...If the post happens to publish but there are no audio players, come back after 7:00 am Central Friday morning and they should be there...

Three uploaded...two to go 12:08 am

FINALLY....12:20 am...night...

Tuesday Music Memories...

Sparks Of Insanity By Vinny "Bond" Marini Tuesday, March 25, 2008 22 Of Your Sparks

Do not forget to head on over to Travis' and get his take on last nights "Dancing With The Stars", or as we like to call it "Hot Legs And Shoes"...

Finally beginning to feel better after almost 3 weeks of feeling like a glob of goo...just in time to get prepared for the trip to Tampa, the first weekend of April. It looks like there will be about 30 TKEs and guests swooping in from around the country. We will be missing a few select Brothers, but life does invade on what we would like to do sometimes...

The other day we talked about our meeting Rick Wakeman from YES. It took place at WITR Radio, the station on the campus of R.I.T. When we arrived on campus, we knew we wanted to be on the radio, so on day two, we headed over to the academic side of campus and walked into the station.

Mike L., the station manager, greeted us and we spoke for a while. He asked about musical tastes and think he was impressed with the spectrum of my tastes. He gave me a tour of the station and we knew we belonged there.

1972...albums...WITR had thousands and thousand of albums. Floor to ceiling, every wall in two rooms and three more rows in each room. HEAVEN! The trumpets were playing in our head.

Mike gave me a lesson on one of the soundboards. Back then it was all dials and large. Two turntables to your left. Looking into the 'news booth' where the people who did news would sit. Or if we did interviews, we used the same room. On the other side of it was another studio. It was more advanced and was only used by the seasoned DJs and for production work.

Well, the next day, we were on the air at about 3 in the afternoon. The non-freshmen were arriving on campus and we were broadcasting through speakers around campus.

This was a live on-air test for us and then we would take over our first two shifts which were Friday/Saturday midnight to 3am and then Saturday/Sunday midnight to 3am.

Everything was going great...we had only made a couple of technical errors - not starting the turntable on time and once we had not cued the record properly and it started before the turnable was up to speed "a-wahhhhhhhhhh"...

Now when the microphone is on the "ON AIR" light outside the door goes on. First rule of radio or TV or movies, when the "ON AIR" light is on, you do not walk in talking about the station and how far our reach is and how the DJs get to program...

SO we are doing a PSA and this occurs and without thinking we turn and say...outloud...."WHAT THE F**K, CAN'T YOU SEE I AM ON THE AIR"....ummmm oooopsey!

Jaws drop and Mike comes in and looks and shakes his head, and we start a song and close the mic and we discuss the F word... LOL

SO, everything is fine again and we select our last song of the night...Janis Joplin and Big Brother Live "Ball & Chain"...

The version of the song we put on was live and near the end, Janis rips off the F-word about 3 times.... and we just cringed....

We began our normal shift that week and spend 4 years on air there. It led us to some jobs in local clubs and also some shifts on the local commercial radio station WCMF. This is not the version we used on the radio show, but comes from the Monterey Jazz Festival

ENJOY...

TIME IN A BOTTLE

[couchdivider.gif.png]

By Jim Croce
BestAudioCodes.com

Chronologically – As best as I can remember

1) AGE: about two years old: Living in Da’ Bronx. It was late at night and I wanted a bottle. My crib was in the same room as mom and dad. Mom brought me my bottle and brought dad a glass of OJ. Dad tried to drink it lying down and it spilled all over! Confirmed by mom that this happened- my earliest memory.

[couchdivider.gif.png]

2) AGE: Same time frame: Our neighbors across the hall were an older Italian couple…Freida and Emerico. They put up gates so that I could only get into the kitchen in their house. I have a vivid memory of sitting at the kitchen table with Frieda one day drinking espresso with just a dab of Annisette in it. I know we did this more then once, but that one day is there.

[couchdivider.gif.png]

3) AGE: 7 or so: At Aunt Adele and Uncle Sam's house. Their kitchen has a door to the backyard. When you open the door, you make an immediate right to go down the stairs…Cousin Denise (YES YOU! Love you.) goes running out the door trying to get outside without me following. I barrel after her and …ummm never make the right turn and go through the railing falling the 10 feet to the ground. I think I might have passed out...thank goodness for rock-hard Abrubzian/Sicilian skull.

[couchdivider.gif.png]

4) AGE: 10 or so: Mentioned this before, but it is the Saturday morning when all the kids who lived in the homes around us ended up outside riding our bikes in our p.j.'s, on the street so early, none of the parents were even awake…a feel good memory of times gone by.

[couchdivider.gif.png]

5) AGE: 15: My first funeral for a friend. Keith Miller was two years older then I was, but we hung out a lot.

He was an athlete, good looking … a guy’s guy and a ladies man (yes even at 17!). Keith was the guy I wanted to be when I was his age.

Star of the HS Baseball team…dating the hottest girl in town.

Well, one day on their way back from the Hamptons, something happened (was he breaking up with her and she became enraged and grabbed the wheel; was he drunk; were they just having an argument and he lost control…all three of these are things that were whispered)…anyway they hit a telephone pole and it collapsed onto the driver’s side of the car crushing him. All the kids, mingling around the funeral home.. No one knowing what to say...

[couchdivider.gif.png]

6) AGE: 18: Pulling into the campus of RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology) my first day with mom and dad. (Unlike today, we did not do college tours...this was the first time I saw campus).

Meeting my roommate, ditching mom and dad and ending up walking into the campus radio stationWITR and saying “I want to be on air.” I was the next day! Someone walked into the booth during the show and an “F” Bomb went over the air…and my last song of the day was Janis “Ball & Chain” live where she drops the “F” bomb…Ah hell- college radio! I stayed on the air for the entire four years doing my last broadcast for them on the day before I left campus.

[couchdivider.gif.png]

7) AGE: 23: At work and get a call from a salesman asking if I would like to join him for the sixth game of the WORLD SERIES… well of course I would. We sat along the first base line in short right field and watched as Reggie Jackson hit three home runs off of the first pitch from three different pitchers that evening.

[couchdivider.gif.png]

8) AGE: 25: A bit shy of two years later, sitting in seats at Yankee Stadium not too far from those mentioned above as we honored the memory of Thurman Munson the day after his death. A 10-minute standing ovation took the place of the requested moment of silence and when it was over my shirt was drenched with tears.

[couchdivider.gif.png]

9) AGE: 29: Visiting my two best friends (who also happened to be married)…they drag me to a friend of theirs. It ends up that I am the 7th wheel! I can be a crank (OH SHOCK!!THE SHAME!), and was very much one that day, impressing the homeowners and another couple who was there. I came away from the day remembering she was blonde and cute. We had our first date 5 months later. We were engaged 3 months after that.

[couchdivider.gif.png]

10) AGE: 30: 9 months later my wedding day. Allyson looked incredible that day. Then we got to the reception and the band was not there. This was my part of the wedding. I am upset (OH SHOCK!!THE HORROR!) and going outside to get their number from my wallet in the car. Push open the two doors to the front of the hall and yell "MotherF***er!!!" ....right into the faces of my godmother, my great aunt and another aunt! errrrrrrrrrrrrr (The band showed up 5 minutes later, they got an earful then rocked the house! The wedding was talked about for years...).

[couchdivider.gif.png]

11) AGE 33: I am awaken to be told the water had broke. To the hospital...I can be single-minded (OH SHOCK!!THE HUMANITY!) and it was in my mind that the baby would be born that day. When it got close to 11:30, I was now a bit freaked..me freaked with all that Allyson was going through! HA! Matthew V. M. arrived at 11:36pm...just as I knew he would!

[couchdivider.gif.png]

12) AGE: 48: Move into the first home I ever owned (don't ask..). When we walked in, as we were looking, the house just said welcome...the previous owners were big baseball people in town years before...there were flowers all over the property...perfect. And we moved Allyson's mom in with us.

[couchdivider.gif.png]

13) AGE: 50: Sitting in the baseball stadium on the campus of University Of Pennsylvania, watching as Matt is introduced as one of the 24 players selected by the HS coaches to represent Mercer County at the Carpenter Cup, an baseball allstar tournment comprised of teams in the Philadelphia Tri-State Area. You can read more about it: HERE
Matt split two game with another catcher. They caught the same group of pitchers. They were both allowed to call the pitches.

They lost both games giving up 13 runs in the process. Matt was not behind the plate catching for any of those runs.

In his 9-innings catching , the two teams they played did not score. he went 0-4 at the plate, but his skill of handling pitchers he had only competed against, was evident.
