Chicken & Ruby Tuesday...

Sparks Of Insanity By Vinny "Bond" Marini Tuesday, August 26, 2008 31 Of Your Sparks

So, Friday evening I am sitting watching TV in darlin' Nancy's living room and Iron Chef is on. Now, I love this show. I love the ability to take an unknown ingredient and turn it into 4-5 dishes. Now, of course in Kitchen Stadium they have every food known to man and woman, which allows the chefs to be totally brilliant.

Nancy was sitting with me and she had never seen the show and it perked her interest. Then the promo for "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" came on. They mentioned they were going to be in Memphis, so I decided to stick on the Food Network and see what they were going to feature.

Show came on and they were somewhere else to begin...I was doing some things outside and watching through the window until they were in Memphis. Well the place they visited is called UNCLE LOU'S FRIED CHICKEN and they mentioned it was located over near the airport. Nancy and I watched mesmerized as they did the segment. This gentleman has his own spice compound and flour seasonings. Guy Fieri is the host and he was totally rocked out by the food.

I look at Nancy...she looks at me and we agree that on Saturday, we are going to find Uncle Lou's.

Well we did hit the road Saturday afternoon and found the place. Tucked away in a small strip mall...a place you would drive past 2,000 times and never stop in...unless you knew.
AND NOW WE DO!

We entered and there were a few tables taken. It was past lunch hour, somewhere around 2:30 or so. We grabbed a menu (though we had decided on what we were ordering the night before). We both ordered a "Honey-Dipped Smoke Sausage Sandwich" for right then and also ordered a whole fried chicken with the Honey Mild dipping for dinner.

Ya see, Uncle Lou fries the chickens whole and then they are dipped (well dunked) in a vat of the Honey Barbecue Sauce. You can get it mild or hot. As Nancy's son Peter was going to be having dinner with us, we went mild.

We sat and waited for our Sausage sandwiches. A few of the employees stopped by to see "How y'all doin'" and a few other parties arrived and we could hear them talking about "It being just like on the show"...others who were checking it out for the first time after seeing it on Food Network.

One of the people working there began chatting with us and asked what we had ordered. I told him the sandwiches and then a whole chicken for dinner. he laughed and said "Y'all eating a sausage sandwich at 3:00pm, you might not be eating dinner tonight."

Well when the sandwiches came, we knew what he meant. Each sandwich came with two full pork sausages quartered and stacked on two slices of thick white bread and they were ooozing the sauce they were dipped in. I put some of the cole slaw on mine and dug in and OMG!!!!!!!! I was in freaking heaven! I then heard Nancy emit a groan of total satisfaction as she took her first bite.

As we were eating Uncle Lou showed up and as he made his way from table to table he stopped at ours. We again explained that we had come because of the show and he laughed "Yeah, he told me things would be changin'"

The show had aired all last week and the phone had heated up and new faces were appearing in the restaurant. We talked for a while and he explained they had filmed in January and it was now just getting on the air.

As we finished our sandwiches our whole chicken was finished, so we thanked them all again and headed home.

Later that evening, I put some corn on the cob on the grill and we put the chicken in the oven to reheat.

As you will see on the video, they inject the bird first (it is a garlic butter mixture), then they flour and deep fry it. When it is completed, they dip it in your choice of the two sauces.

When I tell you, succulent, juicy, infused with an incredible flavor and then coated in this sauce that Guy describes as "sweet spicy love"...this was the best chicken that has ever passed my lips.

I am actually having some left-overs tonight (Monday) as soon as I finish this post.

I tried to find the segment on youtube, but it was not to be. I did find this news feature from the local FOX station, shot while the DD&D crew was there shooting...You should get the idea...

OH and I love their jingle, which includes the line "If the Colonel had Lou's recipe, he would have been a General..."

Check out his website HERE. While we were there, we heard two phone calls come in from other parts of the country asking to order things. They are going to begin an online store and Uncle Low himself told us that he had been experimenting with freezing the whole fried chickens and then reheating them so he might begin shipping them also. Definitely check out the "About Us" page and read about the "Monster Burger" they also feature, and their challenge to all comers.

I have made a new resolution...I am carrying my camera everywhere I go from now on...I keep 'seeing' things that I know will make great shots. I was on ebay today looking to replace my 80mm-200mm zoom which no longer works and is not worth fixing. I actually saw one auction that includes another camera body, a 50mm, a micro 28mm and two zoom lenses and a speed winder (which I never had)...going to track it and see where it goes...

Welcome to another addition of RUBY TUESDAY - click on the logo above to head over to The Teach's blog to see all the entries this week. This idea has really caught on around the bloggosphere.

This little guy lives at the Memphis Zoo Aviary...I have no idea what kind of bird he/she is...I am not really a bird kinda guy...I am sure someone out there knows...(click to enlarge)

Well, these two just jumped into my brain when writing this post about chicken and stuff...so...I am off to eat some wonderful food, y'all enjoy the music....

TIME TO DONATE SOME RICE TODAY!
<-----------------------------------------------

OK OK OK...we almost put up another post saying we were too tired to do a post, but then Anndi would be bored and Songbird would never speak to us again and Julie would get in her truck and come pound us, and Mimi would throw us in her dungeon and Roger...well Roger would turn Oger loose on us....

hehehehehe

We still have not had time to visit any of you and for that we are truly sorry...we are just getting swamped at work as the New Year is rapidly approaching and we are beginning to get the new creative executions in shape...

Then this past weekend, we had another kidney stone attack on Saturday. Luckily, we had some pain meds which allowed us to sleep most of the day. We had a visit from our special friend who arrived with dinner totally prepared. Yummy pork chops and a wonderful baked yam with crisp green beans and Texas toast.

We did not eat a lot, but it was just what we needed...OH, did we mention some yummy Cove chocolates for dessert? JUST what the doctor ordered. The TLC was so welcome...

We felt pretty good on Sunday and were able to joining our three new friends in the purchase and decorating of their Christmas tree and we were even asked to string the lights for them.

The kidney stones are causing some complications and we will be having a CAT scan on Thursday to ensure that there are no more of the little suckers floating around.

All of these things combined have resulted in our being absent recently...but we vow to get back into the swing of blogging again and being a good visitor....

Had a fun time on the Radio Happy Hour again last night and we have the coolest chat room in all of BlogTalk Radio...if you have not joined us, you should mark your calendar for Tuesday evenings at 9:00 pm Eastern Time...

Our fantasy football team now has the best record in our league, we are guarenteed a spot in the playoffs and, if we can get a win next week will get the top spot and a bye week going into the playoffs...this from the team that ended up in last place last season...

A nice turn-around...

Incredible...the man charged with pulling the trigger in the Sean Taylor case is only 17! What happens to a young man to put a gun in his hand at 17 and turns him into a killer? This just stuns us and we are saddened that these things happens...

OK, it is very late, almost midnight here in Memphis and we need some sleep...

Our good friend Anndi giggled at the title of the album last week when we posted LITTLE FEAT'S "Fat Man In The Bathtub", so we decided to post the title track tonight....

This is "Dixie Chicken"

A hot song by a great group...

Composers: Lowell George, Martin Kibbee

I've seen the bright lights of Memphis
And the Commodore Hotel
And underneath a street lamp
I met a Southern belle
Well she took me to the river
Where she cast her spell
And in that Southern moonlight
She sang a song so well

If you'll be my Dixie chicken
I'll be your Tenessee lamb
And we can walk together
Down in Dixieland
Down in Dixieland

Well we made all the hot spots
My money flowed like wine
Then that low down Southern whiskey
Began to fog my mind
And I don't remember church bells
Or the money I put down

On the white picket fence and boardwalk
Of the house at the edge of town
But boy do I remember
The strain of her refrain
The nights we spent together
And the way she called my name

Well it's been a year since she ran away
Yes that guitar player sure could play
She always liked to sing along
She's always handy with a song
Then one night in the lobby
Of the Commodore Hotel
I chanced to meet a bartender
Who said he knew her well
And as he handed me a light
He began to hum a song
And all the boys there at the bar
Began to sign along

Rant and Rank

Man this is getting big...

People all over the world are getting into it...go check out the video at Anndi's.

TIME TO DONATE SOME RICE TODAY!
<-----------------------------------------------

Head on over to MO'S
and find out who RANKS out first in their Manic Monday

How was your Thanksgiving holiday? We had a great 4 days. We were invited to a family gathering in Mississippi. Everyone was incredibly friendly, the food was great and if we couldn't be with Matt or our family, this was excellent.

We are probably breaking RANKS here, but heck, it would not be the first time...

Well the holiday season has begun full force....every other commercial on the television is geared toward the Christmas buying season...it wasn't always this way, was it?

Why do we remember a time when the Christmas barrage did not begin for another week at the least...

This is not a bah humbug rant, Christmas RANKS up there in my two favorite holidays. (You should know the other from your time here on THE COUCH.)

But the commercialization has just gotten to us and it takes some of the joy out...now we have worked in advertising our whole life in one way or another, and many of those years in direct response - much of it acquisition mail -

yeah, the stuff you hate to get - but where else can you fail 95% of the time and be a success! bwahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

- anyway, so we understand the imperative need for companies to begin the onslaught as soon as possible to get their piece of the pie - you dollars - whether it be the latest toy craze, the newest video entertainment system, the new cool computer, or that diamond that means forever - you only have so many of those dollars and there is the need to make sure their product is first on your mind.

BUT can we at least get past Thanksgiving? We know, we know...Black Friday...the day after Thanksgiving...also known as Blitz Day...the stores open at 4:30 - 5:00 am and people are lined up to get in and start shopping.

Yes, Black Friday...named because it is when most retailers finally get into the black each year...it RANKS as the single day retailers wait for and in that single day 5% of all holiday shopping is done.

ShopperTrak, the American customer traffic counter, estimated that sales on Friday were 8.3 per cent higher than for the same day last year. That preliminary figure exceeded forecasts by the National Retail Federation, which had penciled in a rise of about 3.5 per cent – an increase that would have represented the worst rise in sales for five years.

But we don't have to like it....do we?

OK, sorry...go on and RANK on me if you must...send me your Boo's and jeers...

We just want to have a little less buy me and a little more reach out and share...
