Monday and a new week begins...

Tonight on Music On The Couch I welcome Sandy Atkinson. Her new album Collection is filled with blues of all kinds; electric, acoustic, blues rock, jazz-influenced blues, and ballads.

I will sit with Sandy and discuss her career, her new album and the road she is traveling.

Then Boy Wells takes his seat on The Couch.

Boy Wells started playing guitar at the age of 16 when he heard a Duane Allman solo on The Allman Brothers Band classic, “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.”

He has a new album entitled Blue Skies Calling. I will sit with Boy and discuss his difficult road and where he is today while playing tunes from the album.

Today, all over the United States people are looking at their computers, beginning the pursuit of the holy grail. The perfect March Madness bracket. One in which their selections earn them the points needed to win the pool they have joined.

Check that, to win the POOLS they have joined. I know few people who do not join at least one pool.

One friend, who is a HUGE college basketball fan does a bracket, but it is only for his own satisfaction and joy.

I will do one or two in 'fun' leagues - where no money is wagered or won and one pool that benefits the booster club for Matt's former HS Baseball team.

LOL, in the background the TV has the movie "Social Network" is playing and the just showed the scene where Zuckerberg tells Edwardo that "The Facebook" will never be finished...this as they roll out the new Timeline format, which has caused many people to be upset.

I guess some people feel like they can never sit still and let something just mature...well except those who distill Jack Daniels and fine wine...


Watched "Game Change" on Saturday. Very much enjoyed it...I think John McCain would be sitting in the White House right now if he had made a better choice for Vice-President.

The times they are a changin'

I was sitting here at lunch yesterday (or today as I type this - yesterday as you read it), and going through my sidebar, looking at the blogs I have tended to ignore lately as my time is so limited and realized how many of them are static...

It made me think back to a short two years ago when every single one of them had content updated daily.

Now, these people are on Facebook and Twitter and all their content goes there...the instant (or almost instant) gratification of those two mediums.

No more thought out posts about their lives or their world, which allowed us all to become closer to each other.

We shared good times and bad...shared world events and local items of interest.

The times they are a changin'

Sure those things are still shared, but in short blasts 140 - 200 characters... sometimes it feels so superficial...

Remember when blogging was a HUGE deal..."WOW...I have friends all over the world, look at my map, see where they come from to read what I have to say"

There were cool events like the Bestest Blog Carnival, Creative Photo Contests, daily memes like Wordless Wednesday and others...many blogs all with the same themes on the same days.

We still have Blogblast For Peace, because Mimi is a strong woman and has a cause she loves - as do many of us.

And, of course, then it also hit me. Look at this place. Two posts a week, when for the first 4 plus years it was 5 a week..one every weekday - without fail. Then Music On the Couch came along and that began to take my time.

Now, I am on Facebook and do use Twitter, but not all day every day. If you can only be on Twitter every hour or two during the day, it loses meaning as you can not track all the 140 word blasts being sent throughout the world.

I saw that Mick stated on his blog that "The significance of this blog is rapidly waning."

I feel the same about The Big Leather Couch...but in other ways I can not let go. This place has been such a part of my life for 5 years and 8 months.

Can I just put it to rest? I don't think I can...but maybe at some point it will happen.

Is part of it that I feel I might lose touch with some people? Hell, some came to my wedding; Mick, Phfrankie...and it was the first time we had ever met in person. Some are long time friends who I would do anything for; Songbird, Travis, Julie...and I have never met them AT ALL!

Is that my fear?

Some people, well I have just lost touch with them because they stopped blogging or coming here on the few days I do post...do I miss them? Honestly, not all, but some I do miss.

LOL. So I just stopped writing and clicked on Maggie Moo's old site. She started a new blog a time ago and I can not remember the url and it was one I never put on my sidebar. And what do I find, but a post from 3 weeks ago stating she is now engaged. WONDERFUL news for a special person. (HA I just figured out the new url and went over and read some posts).

So there you have it...I miss the old blogging days, but they are never coming back...I miss some of the old gang...I am not sure if The Big Leather Couch means anything any longer, but I can not let it go...

So, for now...you are stuck with me

CONGRATS to the Dallas Mavericks, who after a season of 2,000,000 games lasting 3 years (or so the NBA season seems) beat the Miami heat in 6 games to take the title.

No LeBron bashing here...heck, he does a good enough job himself.

SO, Terrelle Pryor pulled a Giambi the other day, issuing an apology, but never stating why he was apologizing.

“I say sorry to all the Buckeye nation and all the Buckeye fans across the country,” Pryor said. “I never meant to hurt anybody directly or indirectly with my conduct off the field and I am truly sorry.”

OK, Terrelle, was it selling the merchandise to drug dealers? Was it selling merchandise to anyone? Was it the fact you drove a new car almost every week and we are not talking about a 1999 Honda...we are talking brand spanking new luxury cars.

So, you apologize..shouldn't the entire city of Columbus apologize for being blind to the fact that a college student could have so many cars?

It is time to revamp the entire NCAA Scholarship program to allow these kids to work if they can, and to receive a stipend each month.

THEN, there has to be rules in place so when the coach bolts or the player does (as Pryor has done after the allegations arose), they can be sued in court for repayment of the money they gave or took illegally. And go after the boosters too!

Finally, today...another item I picked up from Facebook. This from my friend Jon and it is amazing what we can do with photographs these days...

This is scary and at the same time, with the way of the world, this will help in solving situations in the future - check out the link here.

Amazing how far technology has come. Just pick a person in the crowd and keep double clicking on their face.

Very impressive engineering, this will help law enforcement.

FASCINATING BUT SCARY!!! If you were there, they would know!!

 You used to be able to get lost in the crowd, but not anymore. Double click on any area in the picture to bring the person closer. Or, just click the mouse and use the mouse wheel to bring them closer.

This is a photograph of 2009 Obama Inauguration. You can see IN FOCUS the face of EACH individual in the crowd.

You can scan and zoom to any section of the crowd. Wait a few seconds. Double click anywhere. And the focus adjusts to give you a very identifiable close up.

The picture was taken with a robotic 1474 megapixel camera (295 times the standard 5 megapixel camera). Every one attending could be scanned after the event, should something have gone wrong during it.

Fast Friday

Another week comes limping in to an end…bringing another weekend of enjoyment with my baby…

No real plans this weekend, it is still pretty cold here, but the weather appears to be changing over with temps expected in the 50’s next week.


So I have been trying to get onto Facebook more often and read things my friends write and communicate with old friends.

I have been getting poked by friends to get onto Twitter and send tweets…of course this might be beneficial for promoting Music On The Couch, but I am not sure I want to only use it for that…I just do not know if I can do The Couch, Mangia Y’all, Music On The Couch, Facebook AND Twitter…

But…I did sign up and created an account. Can you guess what name I used? Go on…try and find me out there in Twitter-ville…see iffen you can do it…

I have sent out just one Tweet so far…I am following two people – but there is the other set-back. I set up for mobile and dang if my cell phone does not bing every five minutes (the two guys I am following are both musicians and are both Twitter-prolific). SO then I set it up for only Direct Tweets to be sent to my phone and – of course – no one knows I am on there (except Nancy) and so, no direct tweets!

A true conundrum indeed.


I am still growing…I am the first to admit that. And I learn something new almost every day. I hope that never ends.

I was thinking about the reads I have almost every day while I eat my lunch.

On Wednesday, TRAVIS of "Trav's Thoughts" treated us to new poetry. Travis got his dark on and came up with a winner IMHO.

Two weeks ago, BURL of "Musings Of The Burl"recounted the tragedy of the Challenger mission from a viewpoint you might not expect.

If you want to see a master at work over the next month or so, check out MICKEY-T at "Mahihini Tennessee" will have a pictorial history of the carpentry job he is undertaking.

On Thursday, DIANNE of "Forks Of The Moment", let her grand daughter Hope take the reigns with her iPOOD t-shirt and the magic of digital cameras.

LAYLA of "Layla's Classic Rock" has given the floor to some of her friends to contribute and each day another album/artist/concert is presented and then discussed in comments. The posts are well written, balanced, and these people know their music. No, I am not a contributor!

"TUGS PHOTOS" shows us her world from "Hell, CO" and the neighboring environs...she had developed an excellent eye and touch with lighting..check her out.

Need an Idol fix? THE POPEYE could be your oasis in the desert. But you need the oasis to be filled with beers and shots and a dash of snark.

Honestly, I could go on...but if you look to the right, you will see the scroll menu of MY FRIENDS (right there --->)...everyone of them is there for a reason...some make me think, some make me laugh, some make me wonder, and I am thankful I have found them all...



I decided to do this for fun…Flashback to my very first post ever…

Well... welcome to the BIG LEATHER COUCH... this will be my place to open the top of my head and let all that information up there spill out.

It will take the form of stream of conscienceness and rants and raves...but it will also be well thought out and concise (yeah like I ever do anything concise!)

I am hoping you will bookmark me and come and visit.

The plan is to post daily, but that might not always happen...so be patient...

OK, so I understand when myspace and Facebook began kids loved to put stuff up there to be seen by their friends, not thinking of the consequences. Then school officials began monitoring the sites to see what their students were doing and took actions against those who were showing themselves to be three quarts shy of a gallon...

Parents caught on and began watching what little Johnny and Janie were up to...even local police opened up accounts using false names to see who might be causing trouble or breaking laws in their town.

So you think that after so many years, kids would learn - HECK-A-DOODLE, not only kids, but young adults.

Folks, employers look at your Facebook and myspace accounts like 3 seconds after your resume hits their desk.

And the latest advent of 'let's make fun of these knuckleheads' is LOLONMYWALL.COM. Here the authors of this site repost the most ridiculous posts on facebook and make sure you don't miss one of them...

Keep posting pictures of yourself drunk and peeing your pants...or talking like you have a 2nd grade education cause it be hip and all dat...I hear Jack in the Box is hiring...

Bye Ace…time for those acting lessons dude…

The producers over at American Idol sure are sadists…I hope this is the last year they put a contestant in the horrible position as they did to Taylor Hicks last night. They have done this before, but last year when they asked Bo to select the group of three he belonged in, he had NOT been told he was safe. Taylor knowing he was safe had to select either the group with his roommate (Elliott) or the group with a friend (Chris). He looked so uncomfortable, but tried to be a diplomat, shaking Chris’ hand in a gesture of “You don’t belong here”, before moving across the stage to the other group.
Nice thing is the group of fans for Chris on the AI site knew it was the producers way of trying to start a little war between the Tribe and the Patrol and we are having none of it…

Congrats to Katie Holmes and Mr. Scary on the birth of their daughter. Do you see the cult look Cruise has in his eyes all the time now? Word is, he bought an Ultrasound machine and had been doing ultrasounds on Katie at home. Incredible that all you need to be is a Scientologist and you are qualified to do medical procedures and to spew your views on others without remorse.

Note to all you college and high school students out there…Administrations across the country know about Facebook.com and myspace.com, so STOP POSTING PICTURES OF YOURSELF AND FRIENDS DRINKING AND DOING DRUGS AND OTHER THINGS ILLEGAL.
Students at Princeton University are upset that University Public Safety has gone online and joined facebook.com. These geniuses think it is unfair for them to do it. DOH...being on the Internet puts you in the public domain folks…One student commented “I think it is pretty deceptive of campus police to use Facebook.com and not tell anyone beforehand that they are using it.”

From the “ah…the world can rotate again” files…Anna Benson has withdrawn her petition for divorce after some “soul-searching”. Guess the thought of never “doing it” on a pitchers mound in a baseball stadium again got too much for her…or was it that without being married to a professional athlete her star-quality would suffer?

The feel good story of the day is one that Rick Reilly of Sports Illustrated brought to my attention last year and I was reminded of after seeing an article regarding the Boston Marathon. Dick Hoyt and his son Rick have been racing since 1979. They have participated in over 900 events since then, including Ironman Triathlons. This past Boston Marathon was their 25th together. Dick is 65 and Rick is 44 and they are proud they have never finished last. Nice story as it is…what makes it so special? Rick was born with Cerebral Palsy and is in a wheelchair and cannot talk. He communicates through a special computer. In 1979 a charity race was run to support a lacrosse player who was paralyzed in an accident. Rick told his dad he wanted to go to show support and that life goes on. They finished second to last that day, but that night Rick wrote to his dad “When I am running it feel like my disability disappears. 25-years later they are still running…and everytime I read this story a tear comes to my eye. This is what athletics and love is about...Not self and ego... HEAR THAT BARRY?

Has Barry Bonds retired yet? No? Too bad. - BUT you have to love these stats so far for 2006: AVG. .174. HR. 0. RBI. 1. SB. 0
