Five On Friday - Stormy Monday

Sparks Of Insanity By Vinny "Bond" Marini Friday, July 30, 2010 10 Of Your Sparks

Before we begin today, I want to mention a 'project' Brother Rich has begun that is very cool...

The object of the Lyric for Every Day of the Year Project is to come up with songs that mention, or refer to, every single one of the 366 days of the (leap) year. The aim is nothing more than simply coming up with a really cool, really long list of song titles.

This is a cool thing indeed...some great dates are already filled in, but there are many more to go...

Check it out HERE

This week, I picked one of my favorite songs EVA! And decided to share five versions of it. The song was written by T-Bone Walker and originally released in 1948.

The song is based in the standard 12-bar blues format. The lyrics portray a person who is separated from their love, and is suffering from guilt in some way because of what they have done.

The original recording appeared on Black & White Records, produced by Ralph Bass, and was one of Walker's breakthrough sides in pioneering the idiom of electric blues guitar. This recording also featured smoky trumpet work from sideman Teddy Buckner. It reached #5 on the R&B charts in 1948. B.B. King has said that "Call It Stormy Monday" inspired him to begin playing electric guitar.

We start with the originator, Mr. T-Bone Walker.

Then a collaboration between Mr. B.B. King and Mr. Albert King (no relation BTW.

Next is Mr. Bobby "Blue" Bland with his interpretation.

Then a female version from Ms. Eva Cassidy, who like many artists was not discovered until after her death in 1996. I love the smokiness of her voice.

Finally, a version I had never heard before, by the duo of Goodnow & Baldwin. It is interesting to hear their version.

ENJOY and HAVE A GRAND WEEKEND!

Contests, Blogger Radio & Blues

Sparks Of Insanity By Vinny "Bond" Marini Tuesday, July 24, 2007 18 Of Your Sparks

best blog of the year

Over the last year and a half of blogging, we have met so many wonderful people.

Some we found through a site called Bestest Blogger...well a few months ago there was a big hub-bub over the way the site was being run (or not run depending upon your point of view), and some nastiness went through the bloggosphere. We made our feelings known then and, as you can see...well, there is nothing to see...LOL

Well, it appears that Mr. Griffin has revamped some of that site and is going to begin a new site. But before he does, there is a contest to name the BESTEST BLOG OF THE YEAR.

All sites that have been named BESTEST BLOG OF THE DAY are entered.

What does this mean?
It means some of our favorite bloggers are in the running, including:

The process is super simple. There are 105 blogs in the running. Go here and vote for them on a scale from 1 to 5 (1 is the worst, 5 is the best).

If you want to make your vote count 3 times as much, be sure to register first.

Voting will end 2 weeks from today, August 6th and winners will be announced on August 7th.

The winner will receive (at least) a $50 cash prize! They will also have a link to their blog featured on the Blankest Blank Home Page for the next year (until the next blog of the year is decided).

The overall top 10 blogs (including the winner) will have their link featured at Bestest Blog (replacing the Blog of the Month and Featured Blog in the top left) as well as have their links replace the blog of the year voting page. Results for blogs ranked 11 and up will be available from a link on the voting page as well.

OK, do not forget to give some love to those above...
....THANKS

......this has been a public service announcement

BlogTalk Radio update...

tonight...6:30 - 7:30 EDT
Just click on the MO SHOW link in the left sidebar

Tonight at 9:00PM EDT
click on the link right above MO

Yahoo! Sports Senior NBA Writer Adrian Wojnarowski will update us on the latest information concerning NBA referee Tim Dunaghy and allegations that he was working on behalf of the Gambino Crime Family.

Dr. Blogstein will attempt to keep Jane awake and alert when he assembles his sports brain trust to discuss the scandals in all our major sports leagues. We'll try to determine who has it worst: the mobbed up NBA, the thugged up NFL, or the juiced up MLB.

Also, rapper and radio talk show host SK-1 stops by. We'll delve into the state of hip-hop, find out who the governor of that state is and what the age of consent is there. We'll also try to get SK-1 to do some free-style joints for us (I'm so white).

All that, plus the return of Justin the Weatherman and your calls

Don't remember doing this before, but we just have to go for a second helping of "RIDING WITH THE KING" and Mr.'s Clapton & King...

This is called "THREE O' CLOCK BLUES" and has the two trading vocals and guitar licks throughout. It is just freaking hot.

Oh, yes, we have all lived this one....

The song is credited in various places as being composed by Reily King (B.B.'s given name); B.B. King; B.B. King & Jules Taub; Reily King & Jules Taub; B.B. King & Jules Bihari and finally just to Lowell Fulson!

Once again, Nathan East on bass and drummer Steve Gadd do an excellent job of holding down the entire walking line which allows the guitarists and keyboards a chance to take us away on floating lead guitar lines and keyboard explorations. Mr. Tom Carmon is once again on the Hammond Organ and the great Joe Sample was sitting in on piano.

FYI, the first guitarist is Mr. Clapton... Mr. King takes the solo after he sings...

Hope you enjoy...

Well now, it's three o'clock in the morning
And I can't even close my eyes.
Three o'clock in the morning
And I can't even close my eyes.
Can't find my baby
And I can't be satisfied.

I've looked all around me
And my baby, she can't be found.
I've looked all around me, people,
And my baby, she can't be found.
You know if I don't find my baby,
People, I'm going down to the golden ground.

Goodbye everybody,
I believe this is the end.
Oh, goodbye everybody,
I believe this is the end.
I want you to tell my baby,
Tell her please, please forgive me,
Forgive me for my sins.

Thanks & A Key...

and pride

Just add a less than sign just before the img in the second line.

THANKS to everyone who posted a tribute to Matt and Dixie and family this weekend. We here at THE COUCH did forget to mention Matt's sister Kaitlin who will be missing him terribly. Along with Dixie's partner Tony, who now has the task of dealing with our dear friend over the next weeks. be brave Tony!

Hit the play button. You have heard this song many times before...Among many others the song has been recorded by David Bromberg, Chuck Berry, The Allman Brothers, Spencer Davis, Derek & The Dominoes, John Lee Hooker, Freddie King, Little Walter, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, Dinah Washington, Junior Wells and Muddy Waters.

Written by Bill Bill Bronnzy & Charles Segar it is a true R&B classic.

This version is featured on the 2000 release "RIDING WITH THE KING" with B.B. King & Eric Clapton featured.

A project the two had discussed over the years since meeting in the '60's, they finally had the opportunity. On this particular song, "KEY TO THE HIGHWAY", Mr's. Clapton and King are both featured guitarists and vocalists. They are joined by Nathan East on Bass, Steve Gadd on drums, Tim Carmond on Hammond Organ, and drum programming by Paul Waller.

Just think of what it would have been like to be in that studio for these recordings. The passion, respect and energy must have been amazing.

We hope you enjoy...

"WHIPPING POST"
"VAUGHN JAM"
"VALDEZ"
"EL PASO"
"THRILL IS GONE"

Welcome To THE COUCH...Sit on Down and Get Comfy..

Hope everyone had a wonderful HALLOWEEN...full of safe fun, plenty of candy and some spooky times.

THE COUCH got back to the hotel and just decided to stay quiet and do some searches on youtube.com.

Not exactly what
THE COUCH began looking for, but eventually got around to doing some music searches and today, THE COUCH is going to be a bit self-indulgent (hey that's the true definition of blogging anyway) and share some things found.

For those of you who are not real familiar with there artists, please please please sit back and let these load.

If you have a slow connection, as soon as the video begins to play, hit the pause button and allow them to fully load before playing them. It really ruins the mood if the videos pause over and over.

Anndi and Lynn...
THE COUCH knows you can't watch them at work, but you will be in for a treat when you get home!

There is a common theme for these and that is the pairing of two wonderful guitarists on songs that will blow you away.

The first comes in two parts...due to it's length.
It is from September 23, 1970...Fillmore East, New York City...this show became legend and one of the best live albums ever released...

Yes, it is The Allman Brothers Band...Listen to the interplay between Duane and Dickie Betts...Watch the facial expressions of Duane as he just makes the guitar sing and at the end of part two does a back and forth with his brother Greg...Whipping Post...

Next we visit the Vaughn Brothers, Jimmy and Stevie Ray. This is a special clip as the brothers play together but in an incredibly unique way...This is truly brotherly love!

Do not know where this next clip is from, though it looks to be a television show...George Benson teams with Carlos Santana on the song "Valdez"...cool as the other side of the pillow (with props to Stewart Scott of ESPN for the phrase)...

Finally... Las Vegas June, 26, 1994, just 14 months before Jerry left us.. The Grateful Dead perform one of my all time favorite songs "El Paso", the story of love and death and the consequences...Gotta love Bob Weir and Jerry in shorts...LOL

THE COUCH will be away until Monday, as I leave tomorrow to go back to NJ, pack the U-Haul and do the 16-hour drive with Matt...

The next time you sit here, it will officially be located in Memphis...

OK, Now I did it... how can I talk about living in Memphis without this last video...

No clue where it is from but...the legendary BB King, Eric Clapton and Phil Collins on the drums... Oh baby the Thrill will never be gone...

St. J - P.B.U.A.Q.B.

Thanks for sitting on THE COUCH, hope you enjoyed your stay.

Remember .. Nets For Malaria - UNFoundation.org/malaria - find the big SI's Nothing But Net logo ... Or call 202.887.9040. Every cent goes to buying nets to place over the beds of children in Africa to stomp out Malaria. PLEASE HELP.

Keep that spark of insanity kids...It helps keep you an individual.
