Hummmmmmmm..... OK, remember I said that before I posted yesterday it showed 13 page impressions. I got 8 comments (including one from the one and only FRED!) ... and it shows 53 impressions. So, I guess either I do not get that whole page impression thing, or many did not post as instructed.

OK class...when the teacher gives an assignment... Oops, no Fred is the teacher, not me...nevermind! Though I have thought about following his lead and chucking the corporate world for the halls of academia...if Middle-School or HS is academia...and YES..I KNOW IT IS!

We even got a few new comments from our July 4th post, so you may want to scroll back to that one. Sue adds some interesting information about Adams and Jefferson, which I had forgotten about. Thanks for the extended lesson Sue.

Not one person was offended by my comment about Ken Lay so that made me smile. I used it on my friends Janice & Andy last night, as they had not read my blog yet...and it got a laugh from them, so I figured I was probably in the clear.

No, really...until someone in authority totally confirms it is him and they didn't do one of those FACE/OFF things (ya know the movie with John Travolta and Nicholas Cage. Travolta has Cage's face transplanted onto his body...Good flick..pick up the DVD if you have not seen it)...I will not be convinced that he isn't lying on a beach on some deserted island in the South Pacific.

I have a tree in my backyard that is green with moss from all the rain. And, YES, I realize I spelled the word MOLD as "MOULD" yesterday. Mr. Mould (gosh, I don't even know his first name anymore!) was our Principal in high school. We even made reference to his name being something that lives in dark cool places in a skit I wrote for our Senior Follies...WOOOOOO Commack HS South Spartans - class of 1972!!!!!!!!!!!

Tonight begins 10 days of the West Windsor Little League hosting All-Star games, including the District 12, 12-year old Finals. The winning team goes on to the State tournament...then they can move on to the Sectionals, the Regionals and finally the holy shrine of Little League baseball...WILLIAMSPORT, PA. We have had 2 teams win the District but never get out of the States.
I run the concession stand there and have for the last 8 years. CASA DE WARD is unique for a Little League Concession stand in my humble opinion. We serve the normal foods - hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken nuggets, pretzels, ice cream & drinks.
I also make homemade Sausage & Pepper Hoagies (translation for the rest of the country ...subs, grinders, heros - think that covers it); Barbeque Chicken Sandwiches (breast meat slowly cooked in a blend of 3 barbecue sauces and then shredded, served on a bun) - Our cheese steak is made with thinly sliced Rib-Eye...

And then, from our local deli, we also offer - fresh-made each day - Turkey and Tuna Wraps; Chef Salad, Caesar Salad and Fruit Salad. On Saturday mornings they delivered Bacon, Egg & Cheese and Sausage, Egg and Cheese Sandwiches to us - fresh and piping hot.
The deli items are new this year, but two years ago when we hosted this tournament, Casa De Ward actually got a whole article in the Trentonian Newspaper. Nice article and a picture too! (hummm scanner is not hooked up - dang!)
We have averaged between $9,000 - $11,000 per year - regular season for the league. It allows us to bring in a professional "baseball landscaper" to maintain the fields, which means we have very few rain-outs. The league was deeded a touch over 11 acres in the 60's, so we own the property our 3 main fields are on.
Now 2 years ago for this tournament, we earned $14,000 in 14 days. Not bad for concession stand food! Oh, and we are one of the lower priced stands in our district. We do insist (with a bond) that the parents work ONE 2.5 hour shift per family, so that is not so bad. For post-season, each family pays $25 and we hire local teens. Worst part of the job for me? Every second Sunday, spending 2-3 hours cleaning the deep fryer...I mean YUK! Well, Rocky loves me when I come home stinking of grease, but other then that....So, that is where I will be found - working the grill, for the next 10 days weekday evenings and Saturday and Sunday. For some reason, Sunday is the longest day...games at 1, 3, 5, 7 ... 10 hours...oh my!

We do have a former WWHS player in "THE SHOW" at this time. His name is Kevin Barry and he is a pitcher for the Atlanta Braves. His first appearance in the majors was against the NY Yankees in a game the Yankees were ahead 8-0 I believe. He came in and pitched 3 shut-out innings. It was real easy to root from him to do well in that situation. The Braves need pitching and I was surprised Kevin was not up earlier.

So, I am still trying to figure this site out in terms of the number of visits I get each day. They do not have a counter mechanism as you see on many sites, and I do not think I have the readership who post comments often.
As I am using their "Adsense" tool which propagates the ad links at the top of each page, I can go and see some details.
I am just not sure I understand them. There is an area for "Page Impressions"... Now, if I read their explanation correctly, that is the equivalent of site hits...
This is what it reads "We count a page impression when our AdSense JavaScript is actually executed by a user's browser and ads are displayed. This is generally the equivalent to a page view...Note that page impressions differ from ad unit impressions. If multiple ad units are present on a page, multiple ad unit impressions will be logged for that page view, but only a single page impression will appear in your reports. For example, a user viewing a page with 3 ad units and 1 link unit will log 4 ad unit impressions, but only 1 page impression."
So, do you think I am correct? I would hope so, since yesterday there were 43 page impressions. If I am reading correctly, that means 43 of you read my blog yesterday. NOT BAD! As a matter of fact, today at 11:29 AM, it shows 13 page impressions already. I know I was assisted in these high numbers by my sister, Lynn, and dad, Vince (you all remember him- right?)...who sent out emails in the last two days to friends of theirs alerting them to my July 4th post.
Now, why am I bringing this up today? Well, as many of you know, my brother Rich has a blog called Favorite Office Time Wasters and we have talked about the number of hits his site gets and what I think I get on my site.
Thing is, we are both totally jealous of his good friend Fred, who maintains a site called Fred's World. Fred literally gets like 30+ comments with each of his posts and that just makes Rich and I green with jealousy! (side note... why is jealousy green?)
It is all in good fun of course (grumble grumble gripe gripe)...but I guess when you do this you always wonder if anyone is truly out there.
Another side note---check out Fred's World, it really is a fun site to read. Fred was always a character growing up and continues to be now.
SO, as a social experiment...I am asking my legion of readers (I do crack myself up sometimes), to just post a comment. I have allowed for anonymous comments to be posted, so you do not have to sign up at this site to comment. You also do not have to put your name...just a 2 word comment "read it" will do...nothing more...no money needed...no invasion of your personal space.
Then I can call Rich and tell him to check how many comments I got! WOOOOOO

So, Kenneth Lay has passed away. My condolences to his family who should not be held accountable for his actions, but I have to tell you folks...I want prove. This guy is so slimy and slippery, well...I think he would do anything to get out of serving a life term.
(hummmmm I might have just ticked off people with my "callousness" there and maybe I will lose readers, but hey, It is my blog and I get to say what I want!

The shuttle was launched successfully yesterday and that makes me happy. The thought of another NASA failure and casualties, is one I do not want to ponder.

It is raining - yet again - on the east coast. Seems like it has rained every day for the last 3 weeks. I am growing mould!

July 4, 1776 - July 4, 2006 - 230 Years Of Change

June 11, 1776, five men meet in secret...their goal, to draft a resolution by which the 13 colonies would break from rule by the British. These five men (John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Robert R. Livingston & Roger Sherman), decided that Mr. Jefferson would write the original draft. When he was done, Franklin and Adams made some minor changes and these changes were incorporated prior to presenting the document to the Continental Congress on June 28, 1776.
John Trumbull's famous painting is usually incorrectly identified as a depiction of the signing of the Declaration. What the painting actually depicts is the five-man drafting committee presenting their work to the Congress. Trumbull's painting can also be found on the back of the U.S. $2 bill.


On July 2, 1776, independence was declared as outlined in the "Lee Resolution" presented to the Continental Congress by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia on June 7, 1776, which read (in part): "Resolved: That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved."
The full declaration (after some additional rewriting) was adopted at the Pennsylvania State House on July 4, 1776.
The original was signed by John Hancock and Charles Thompson. Then a local printer, John Dunlop spent the evening printing 150-200 copies of the document. The original document never survived but there are about 25 original "Dunlap broadsides" in existence.
On July 19, 1776, Congress ordered a new handwritten copy be produced and signed by all of the original delegates to sign. On August 2, 1776, most of the delegates signed this document, in geographic order of their colonies from north to south, though some delegates were not present and had to sign later. Two delegates never signed at all. As new delegates joined the congress, they were also allowed to sign. A total of 56 delegates eventually signed. This is the copy on display at the National Archives.
The youngest to sign was Edward Rutledge (26). The oldest, Benjamin Franklin (70).

When, in the Course of human Events, it becomes necessary for one People to dissolve the Political Bands which have connected them with another, and to assume, among the Powers of the Earth, the separate and equal Station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent Respect to the Opinions of Mankind requires that they should declare the Causes which impel them to the Separation. Such has been the patient Sufferance so these Colonies; and such is now the Necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The History of the Present King of Great-Britain is a History of repeated Injuries and Usurpations, all having in direct Object the Establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. In every stage of these Oppressions
we have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble Terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated Injury. A Prince, whose Character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the Ruler of a free People. Nor have we been wanting in Attentions to our British Brethren. We have warned them from Time to Time of Attempts by their Legislature to extend an unwarrantable Jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the Circumstances of our Emigration and Settlement here. We have appealed to their native Justice and Magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the Ties of our common Kindred to disavow these Usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our Connections and Correspondence. They too have been deaf to the Voice of Justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the Necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of Mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace, Friends. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm Reliance on the Protection of the divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.
THE SIGNERS
In order - North to South
Were these men perfect? Absolutely not! We all know that many were slave owners and that their words did not represent slaves. Women were also not represented in this document or it's meaning. But right in the beginning, they also gave those that follow the ability to change as the times changed:
"that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these Ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its Foundation on such Principles, and organizing its Powers in such Form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness."
Over the centuries, our ancestors have righted these wrongs and given those who were once slaves their freedom and women the right to vote.
Did these changes come easily? Of course not, change is never easy. The change that these men saw fit in the 1700's was certainly not easy. The civil war pitted brother against brother in some cases. The fight for a woman's right to vote was long and hard.
For the most part the changes that have needed to be made have been made.
Are we perfect today? Like our ancestors, we are not. We have many things that we still need to change and slowly over time we can only hope they will.
Will they change without struggle? Again...no.
But the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is built on the words that change can be made...and without those words who knows what our lives would be today.
Tomorrow we celebrate the day these patriots stood up to a government that was intolerable.
We get together with friends and loved ones and enjoy the company of all.
We barbeque and eat and drink and laugh and smile.
Many will watch the fireworks - which represent the battles that took place during the original fight for freedom.
What we no longer do, it seems, is stopping to reflect on the lives that were lost during this struggle and the lives that have been lost in the many struggles that followed. Not only the wars we fought with our military (we have days to honor those brave men and women)...but the lives that were lost fighting for freedom within the USA.
The lives lost by those who fought for racial freedom.
The lives lost by women during their struggle for equality.
The lives lost over the right to choose.
The lives lost by those who have protested what they have felt are unfair policies of our govenment.
All these lives have been lost in the continuing struggle to get it right.
Will we ever get it right?
I certainly can not answer that question, but I can certainly hope and pray we do our best to get as close as possible.
So, tomorrow, JULY 4, 2006, as you sit with friends and family and throw another burger on the grill or pop open another beer, take one moment and silently thank those people who began the fight in 1776 and all of those who have continued the fight over the last 230 years...
We are not perfect...but we could be so much less perfect without them.
